South Point Historical Lighthouse reviews
11Do it! It's a beautiful drive down there, you'll park off the side of the road, walk along the cliffs and see waves smash against lava and piles of coral.
Southern-most part of America! Bring a hat, it can be windy. Variety of people fishing, cliff jumping, camping.
Southern most point in the USA, a little bit of a hike once there from the parking area. Worth the drive for me.
Although map names this the South Point Lighthouse, there actually is no conventional / physical light house at this location when we were there. There may have been one many years ago? There is a large diamond reflector that could be semantically called a light house and emanates light. Great ocean view from the most southern point of America. Very windy and wear proper shoes.
The lighthouse is actually one of the last cool places that I know of that isn’t guarded or locked or controlled by some government anything. There are no signs to keep off, you can drive right up to it, and really enjoy your time like you normally would before the days of ropes and bureaucracy.
Why come all the way to the Big Island and skip a landmark? This is the southernmost location in the United States and you can take your picture next to the marker if you so desire. The parking areas (improvised) put you in striking distance but you still have many meters to go before you actual reach the marker. Be careful where you walk since there are burial areas off of the path that you don’t want to trot through. Stop and see the signs that the native Hawaiians have improvised to tell you what they think of this use of the land. Also there are campers and tailgaters here so keep your wits about you.
The absolute funnest part of our entire vacation! Get up, have a very light breakfast if any, don't think twice and jump and you will be addicted to it. My son and I loved it and had a really great bonding experience together. Make sure the wind isn't horrible and enjoy the free fall! After you leave hit the bakery for malusadas and then off to the volcanoes. It's the perfect day that costs nothing but gas and a little courage! Loved every second of it, just make sure you are fit enough to climb the ladder back to the top of the cliffs. Oh and last thing it's a food idea to bring a small offering for those that have jumped and not made it for one reason or another, and to respect the land and sea. I left a wedding band and we felt safe and protected. Mahalo!
Such a beautiful place, small walks and some beautiful waves and half lava tubes half cliffs, definitely come here!
Beautiful drive all the way to the end. The views all over the island are spectacular but on the drive out it almost feels as if you're driving to the edge of the planet. Make sure you take swim wear. You can cliff jump or climb down closer to the water. It was also fun to stop and have a beer at the southern most bar in the United States. Well worth the drive out.
Wish there was a sign or something that mentioned where you are/coordinates or something cool.
Southernmost point of the USA. A great cliff jumping spot that I would definitely recommend.
