Tokyo Tei reviews
16Food is still consistently good. We usually do takeout from here. When we have dined there over the years, some of the wait help were kind of rough in how they spoke to customers - not necessarily rude, but more unprofessional like how some people might speak to someone they’ve known for a long time and have that type of rough banter dynamic.
I really don’t like leaving negative reviews but this was honestly one of the worst meals I’ve had. I arrived around 7pm, was seated, ordered my food, and didn’t receive my meal until close to 8pm. The restaurant was at half capacity at most. I ordered the teishoku combo and was disappointed by how little food there was in the bento box. Three small pieces of kalbi and four thin slices of sashimi. I’ll admit the sashimi was incredible quality but that was the only remarkable thing about the food. Service was incredibly slow and my waitress only came by to check on me once. I noticed another family who seemed to be waiting a while for their food, too. Hope management can fix this.
Unfussy homely cooking. Sashimi was the highlight and I enjoyed the fish and steak. The tempura was good at first, but as the batter is a little thick, got heavy towards the end. Good value for money
Always love a great bento. The tempura of course, short ribs and sashimi, miso soup. Quick service, pleasant. Couldn't pass up the chance to eat here again, I've been a patron since the 80s.
Anything tempura is amazing here unique and one of a kind. Sashimi was also delicious. I didn't care much for the pork teriyaki but 5 stars because that's how amazing the tempura was!
Miso soup was too salty. Dishes weren’t cleaned well, you can still taste the soap. The entrees were acceptable.
This is one of our family's favorite restaurants. The teriyaki steak, salmon, and tempura, and teishoku trays are our favorites. Love the miso soup, hot tea, and koko that come with the meals. Service is always excellent.
Good food and service. Grateful that they follow rules and check vaccination cards, unlike many restaurants who postbthe signs, but don't.
LOVE this restaurant. Grew up on Maui eating here. Moved away recently but been back time and time again and it's always delicious.
Ate some of the sahimi in the picture, got excited, forgot to take a photo before I dug in.
Amazing food. Always love eating here. Traditional food and very delicious. Hospitality is always very sweet and caring. This is one of my family's favorite places to eat.
Amazing comfy Japanese food! I definitely enjoyed this as my last meal for the year and got the teishoku E! Fried fish shrimp tempura and sashimi! A little bit of everything and exactly what I was craving on a light rainy day! Imagine spirited away vibes with the rain the food and the feel! An amazing dinner meal! Definitely give it a try if your looking for authentic Japanese eats!
Tokyo Tei is becoming a tradition for us when we’re about to leave Maui. The food is always so good, and the service so friendly!
Clean great place to have lunch while at your local card shop across the street. Would have gotten 5 star but the price is a little to high
The place is very quaint old style. The service is top notch. Our server was a very sweet lady. She kept our water glasses full. The food was very good. I had the Teishoku B. I got the fish cooked.
We love that you have the option to order individually or family style. Just a heads up though, when ordering the Teriyaki Steak always order it under cooked. For example, I usually prefer my steak medium, so I always order my steak medium rare. I ordered it medium once and by the time I ate it, the steaks temperature became closer to medium well/well done. Because the steak cooks more as it sits, it became very hard and tough.
My favorite entree is Teishoku B, it includes Teriyaki Steak, Shrimp and Veggie Tempura, Ahi Sashimi, 1 scoop of white rice, miso soup, and pickled cabbage.
