Waipiʻo Valley Lookout reviews
16Great place for a quick stop, a couple informative signs about the valley and Kamehameha which were interesting as well. Pretty breathtaking view with a waterfall hidden in the right side if you can spot it!
This place is beautiful. The hike down to the valley is very steep so make sure you have plenty of time to get to the bottom and back up. We only went halfway but still got to see some beautiful views.
This Majestic lookout point is awe inspiring and a special slice of Hawaiian history is to be learned here. Book a 4wd rental or tour to reachbthe bottom to check out the gorgeous black sand beach.
Great place to view gorgeous how you think of Hawaii before you get here spot:) do not go down the road to the valley unless you have real 4x4 woth low gear AND knowledge of how to use it. This is a dangerous road and you can kill yourself or others if you're not careful. Also, be as respectful as you can be at the bottom, there is not much tolerance for littering or disrespectful actions, it's a sacred area and it's protected so jave fun just show Aloha and respect.:)
It is a VERY VERY hard walk for the first 1.2 miles with a hike of about °60 even harder walk up but it is very beautiful I don't know if I'd say worth it. But pretty none the less.
Definitely a must for anyone looking to get incredible scenic photos. If you're looking to go all the way down, and don't want to hike, you must have a 4-wheel drive vehicle, all wheel drive doesn't qualify. If you don't have a vehicle, and don't want to hike I suggest brining a drone as you'll be able to get amazing photos of the entire valley, to include the absolutely breathtaking waterfall which I will upload later.
The trek down to the beach is arduous, but worth it. I would not recommend it for small children or anyone with knee, hip or heart problems though. My husband and I are healthy and in our 20s but could easily see this hike being too much for a lot of people.
Worth the trip and the hike. A little bit intense for the inexperienced or with difficulty to hike. But there are always people going up and down with trucks and ATVs so you can always ask for the ride up the hill. Highly recommended!
One of the most beautiful attraction to our Big Island Vacation. Even briefly entertained the idea of hiking down to the ocean level but with a 2 and a half year that thought was instantly out the window. Regardless the view from the top was absolutely stunning. Definitely a must go while on Big Island
Locals are not very friendly here, but the site is spectacular. Getting down and up is a good workout! The black Sand beach didn't have much sand Left compared to when we came 12 years ago!
A breathtaking view, definitely worth the stop. There is very limited parking and the roadside parking can back up badly, especially on the weekends. The weather can also change quickly, so be sure to check before driving out. We had a great view for a while, then a storm moved in and all we could see was clouds. For a more memorable experience and less arguing hire one of the local companies to drive you down the valley and give you a tour (worth it). Note these tours can not take you to the beach directly but you can arrange a drop off for an additional fee.
One of the places we were looking forward to seeing the most. We got there and it was pouring rain, so we waited in the car to see if it would stop. Ended up leaving after a man tapped on the drivers side window to tell us that we had parked crooked, and that we needed to move. Understandably, that was true, but only on the white line, not over it. We thought the man was another visitor who was trying to park. Turns out, he was a park ranger who never identified himself, or showed us any sort of I. D. After pulling out of the parking spot to leave, the ranger continued to stand in the empty parking spot, talking to someone in a truck parked next to our parking spot. His standing there did not allow anyone else to park in that space. Be aware of this person, and know that abusive rangers can be reported. The 4 stars are for the lookout, the views, the history. The parking is limited, and not the greatest for larger vehicles. We did go back, after it stopped raining. Stunning views, God's creation, alone.
Come with your own four wheel drive if you want to get to the valley floor. A bit nerve wracking of a drive, but so worth it!
Great view of the black sand beach and the valley below. If you want to drive down you need either 4 wheel drive, do a tour guide or pay someone local to take you down.
NOTE: Tours are not available on Sundays so if you prefer the tour guides to take you down schedule it between Monday and Saturday.
Amazing and challenging hike, it was a continuous downhill hike to the beach and a continuous uphill hike back. We hiked a total of a little over 3 miles, we were greeted by wild friendly horses and crossed a river to get to another part of the beautiful black sand beach. Well worth it!
The views are spectacular and worth the hike. The sand is a little course, but not an issue. The hike back up is strenuous.
