Great stay at this camp. The area was nicely taken care off and the beach was very nice too. The only downsize is that it is not possible to book it online, only 2 days in advance via email and for check in, there is exact time slot when you need to be there. For me it did all worked out and I had a great stay!

Never in my life have I left a bad review but my experience at this campsite was truely appalling. The location would be great for those looking to hike the Kalalau trail, but the people who run the place can be incredibly erratic (take a look at some of these other reviews if you don’t believe me). I showed up at 5: 30, signed into their guest book and but money in the box they had set up. When I came back to the campsite at around 8 to stay for the night, the woman who runs the place came out of her home, immediately started yelling that I hadn’t checked in properly because i weren’t there exactly at 6. First of all, I’ve never heard of a hotel or campsite having an exact check-in time (probably because travel plans can be unpredictable). Second, we emailed back and forth a few times and no one ever informed me that I had to be there at 6. I was nice, and apologized, but this woman kept screaming, demanded double the money and when it took me more than 2 mins to find the cash, she told me to leave in 5 mins or she’d call the cops. I’m not a confrontational person and not once was I rude to this woman (although I definitely wanted to be once she started hurling insults and accusing me of being on drugs). She left me completely stranded without a place to stay. In talking to some of my friends who live on Kauai, it seems like she has a reputation for being nasty to people. Stay literally anywhere else.

We were turned away at the gate. I emailed the camp weeks in advance and confirmed that the dates were available. Our flight with delayed 3 hours with Southwest so by the time we got up there it was after 6pm and when I asked the attendant what he would recommend as an alternative option (since he insisted that we could not camp there) his exact words were "I recommend that you plan better" as if the delayed flight was our fault. He had zero empathy and was abrasive and rude from the start. I recommend camping up the road at the near by beach park which is what we did and saved ourselves $20.

A really nice place you can picture to they also have a couple places in there that you can stay but you have to make a reservation Auto exchange that he found it in a beautiful beach ️

Barame and Nice are community heroes. They have taken such great care of this Camp and have improved it often with their own money. They have cleaned and decluttered the area so families can use all of what is there. Building stronger family relationships builds a stronger community.

They appear mean people and never answer phone nor reply to emails. Its a joke. Here again a place ran by Native locals and completely dysfunctional. The campgrounds are as well in Kauai. Highly dysfunctional homeless people are everywhere too. Its like a third world. Nepotism seems to be an issue and why so much dysfunction on the islands.

This is a decent campground but the people running it are rude and unkind. Beware as they will cancel on you on a moment's notice and will tell you that you can't stay without any good reason. The manager has a dog that he uses to scare people off when he gets any pushback as he clearly does not know how to communicate properly with other humans. That's after he starts screaming at you for not following instructions despite no one being there to check you in. I'm disgusted and shocked that people affiliated with YMCA are like this.

Spaciousness, solitude, and the soundscape of the sea sums it up. Also extra credit for sparkling clean bathrooms & grounds.

Great place to camp on the north shore for only $20. Warm showers and nice facilities with a covered pavilion and large grass field. Tunnels beach appears to be the best spot to snorkel on Kauai.

The guy managing this place is a crook. We called and made a reservation over the phone and were assured that we were all set. When we arrived, the manager said he had no record of us and demanded TWICE AS MUCH in cash for us to stay. There was nowhere else to stay and the highway was closing so we were stuck (and he knew it). Someone should report him to the YMCA.

Camped here in February and hiked the Kalalau trail, would recommend as a place to camp while visiting Ha'ena and Hanalei.

The camp itself has an excellent outdoor pavilion with a kitchen sink and VERY clean bathrooms. The owners are locals who know the community and Ha'ena state park very well - I paid for an extra night and left my car there as I camped at Kalalau. The couple who runs it was very nice and let me prepay and helped me deal with a change in schedule, after I had to stay a second night when the road out of Hanalei was flooded and no one could leave.

Notes for staying here:
- Would recommend contacting them ~2 days before (or closer during busy season) to make sure they don't have a group reservation
- $20 cash/night - tell them you want to prepay if you're hiking/camping
- Check in starts at 3 and ends at 6 when they close the gate
- The couple who runs the campground was more than helpful and very kind to me, but they aren't maintaining a reservation system and are not a concierge, so best to think of it like a campground in europe where you're staying on someone's land with their permission
