I will never take my dog here again. First they over charge for EVERYTHING, Second my dog had a cute little brown nose, went to get her from groom the groomers had scratched her nose, leaving barely any skin left. Yet they never mentioned it to me or anything. Beyond ridiculous and sad. There’s our precious babies, that need to be treated with CARE.

This place literally robs you of your money.

My cat was ill and having breathing issues so I took him in and the first check-up was fine. It cost $100 for shots and a wellness check. I took him back and then both of my cats started throwing up 4 times a day. I called them and asked what I should do and the lady said that the doctor could prescribe some nausea medication without seeing them and to wait and see if they do it again. Then I called back again because their vomiting got worse and I was told that they needed a blood test. I was very worried so so took them both in. Only to find out after the “wellness exams” that they didn’t need blood work and that I would just need to buy the nausea medication. That total was $100. I then looked at their “report cards” and literally it said that nothing was examined for both of the cats. Additionally, I received someone else’s pet report card. Worried that they didn’t even examine my cats, I called them and asked for their vet report cards. They sent over one of my cats and then an hour later sent over the other cats one. With the virus, not being able to go into the vet with your pets makes you rely on the vet to do their job. I hoped that they were actually examining my cats. The next week my other cat needed shots. I took him in and told the front desk lady that he just had a wellness check and only needed his shots. She said okay that’s fine. The doctor performed a wellness check anyway and said it was required. I was upset, but so understood. Then I got my cat’s report card, and apparently he had gained over a pound in a week. You would thing that the vet would say something about that on the phone call to me. I looked back at my cats records and it looked like they just faked the numbers because they didn’t actually examine my cat. So, $300 later, and I still don’t even know if my cats were even examined. They robbed me and because I was not allowed in, they got away with it. It really is alarming to know that you can’t even trust your vet during a pandemic. I will never go there again.

I am so grateful for Ames Pet Hospital. Their staff is kind, caring, compassionate, and helpful. Dr. Anthony Haban went up and beyond to make sure my cat was given the best care and attention, thank you!

I was not happy with my experience at Ames Pet Hospital and do not recommend them to anyone who wants a vet that values honesty, transparency, or concern for animals.

My dog Maggie had been the picture of health until she suddenly got sick on Christmas Eve. We thought with her anxiety and visiting different places for the holidays that it might pass, but it did not. We took her to the vet on 12/28. We opted to not do blood work because it didn’t seem serious. She was prescribed a bland diet, and some medications. She did well until 1/2.

We took her back to the vet 1/2 and saw Dr Stohlmeyer. Blood work showed elevated kidney/liver/pancreas levels. She diagnosed Maggie with pancreatitis. They never told us that elevated liver and kidney levels indicated organ failure.

We went back 1/3 for a recheck and fluid injection. No improvement.

1/6 we took her back for more fluids and expressed concern that Maggie hadn’t improved and seemed to be getting worse. Most dogs with pancreatitis will see improvement after 3 days. Dr Stohlmeyer said these things just take time.

1/7 we took her back for more fluids. Dr Stohlmeyer was not in the office that day. I expressed my concern to Dr Elliott who said she’d do a quick examine. She came back and said that Maggie was very very sick and I should immediately take her to ISU vet med emergency hospital. From what I could tell Maggie’s condition between 1/6 and 1/7 was the same.

I took Maggie straight to ISU. They said she was experiencing stage 3 kidney failure, liver failure, and the level of protein in her urine was 50x higher than normal. She was immediately hospitalized with a 24-hour IV for fluids, ng tube to feed her, and a catheters placed to draw blood and administer meds. She was with ISU for 1 week before she started to experience massive pleural and pericardial effusion and we had to put her down. They could never determine a diagnosis.

Ames Pet Hospital should have been honest from the start by explaining the elevated liver and kidney levels were a serious issue. They should have run follow-up blood work during one of our many visits to see that Maggie’s condition was quickly deteriorating and she needed hospitalization. They should have told me much sooner that Maggie’s case was beyond their scope of expertise. If she had been hospitalized sooner, we may have had a different outcome and she would have been able to come home. We are heartbroken that we had to put her down.

High quality service. They're always incredibly friendly to my cat, petting him and talking to him. I was pretty nervous the first time I brought him to the vet and their kindness was very reassuring. It's very clear the staff loves animals and wants to provide the best possible care.

Great service. Took extra time trying to figure out the issue w/ our dog. The doctor went above and beyond and charged us a very reasonable amount. Thank you!

Vet was super nice, very knowledgeable, and I loved how my puppy didn't even notice his shots with the spoon of peanut butter he was licking!

Couldn't make time to see a sick puppy. During normal business hours was told to go to ISU vet for diarrhea and vomiting. That's why I stopped going here. If I could give a zero I would.

I love the doctors and staff here. Doctor Elliot is so kind and caring. She cried with me when one of my babies passed away in my arms after we'd done all we could for him. All of the staff here have an obvious love for all animals, even the rats I bring in. They're also very reasonably priced and always try to get the best treatment while trying not to prescribe medications that are too expensive. Doctor Elliot always listens to opinions/suggestions I get from others and speaks with her colleagues to come to the best decisions for my pets. Now that I've moved to Marion, IA, I really miss this place - I feel like the advice I received here for my rats and dog were always in the best interest of the pet while also being realistic (and not just trying to get me to pay for unnecessary medications and procedures like other vets seem to do). Highly recommend this place!

My mom had taken her dog here when he had gotten hit by a car. They did all they could to help her with him. But Benji didn't make it. The staff treated my mom really good. They even made her a paw print keepsake out of clay for her and they sent her a card as well. My mom has not said anything bad about them.

I absolutely love this place. Not only does it have character from the little "monster" that roams the building, but it has an expertise that you can't get anywhere else. I tried other veterinary places such as summerset and it took them 4 tries to get a sample from my cat's bladder without success, but this place only took one try to get it successfully. The doctors are very knowledgable about how to treat animals respectfully and medically. I would highly recommend.

I recently moved to the area and, after researching the veterinarians in the area, chose Ames Pet Hospital. I was thoroughly impressed! One of my dogs has dog reactivity and the other gets nervous at the vet, so going in with both of dogs for the first time felt intimidating. However, the staff was very accommodating and made the process stress free! We easily avoided the waiting area with the help of the office manager. Our vet, Dr. Lydia Spray, was was excellent, taking it slow and feeding them both a lot of peanut butter which helped relax my nervous dog. She also was knowledgeable about dog behavior, another plus! We will definitely be going back for many years to come.:)

Dr. Stohlmeyer has been our vet for 8 years and we have consistently received excellent care from her and the Ames Pet Hospital staff. Our younger dog was born with a serious ongoing medical condition and Dr. Stohlmeyer has been terrific in talking through our treatment options and working to find ways to keep him healthy.

I brought my chihuahua for a check up and to get some booster shots after moving to the area. The vet was very friendly and knowledgeable. She was excellent with Henry (my chihuahua) who tends to hate everyone and after a few minutes he was completely chill with her and stopped barking (which he tends to do with all strangers)
Dr Lisa K also made my daughter feel comfortable because she gets anxious when Henry gets his check up. She was so awesome it's to the point that my daughter keeps trying to give Henry checkups at home

From the moment I walked in the door, I new this vet was for me. And since I've been a patient, I know from experience what a professional and committed practice this is. Everything is spotless and clean, the front staff are always cheerful, excited to help and efficient. When we arrive, I've never had to wait for my appointment, they swiftly take us to the weigh station and then in to the exam room. From start to diagnosis to personal follow-up, they are 5-star Professionals.
My kitty's doctor is phenomenal! After years of taking her to the University with no diagnosis for her ear and bladder problems, Dr. Elliott zeroed in on the problem right away and gave is an action plan! She is sharp - no one had ever thought to look at allergies before. Brilliant! And they always follow-up with a phone call, or two, to see how Cleo is doing and see if I have any questions. They are the Best!

With years of experience going to Vets for dogs, cats, rats, etc, I can say these folks ROCK! One of the top groups we have ever dealt with, even here in Ames.
