Chicken Coop reviews
14Service was slow, food was decent, cake balls as a prize for trivia should be a capital crime- they’re awful
I had a burger and fries during trivia night. The bread for the burger was not the best, but the rest was great. The trivia sound levels were not consistent, and it was hard to hear the speaker or music at times.
Ankeny, from a recent posting on facebook. My class of 1968 will be having lunch there in the next few weeks. We had some shopping to do while in town and decided to give the Chicken Coop a try, a preview of sorts, before my class lunchen, and very happy we did. I had the bone in wings, one order of 5 with the Garlic Jalapeno sauce and another of 5 with the Tropical Heat. Pam ordered hers as boneless with buffalo sauce, I had the baked beans and fries for sides and she had the onions rings.
We shared our wings and sides, all were clear off the charts in goodness. I particularly liked the Tropical Heat sauce, It had a wonderfully balanced spice heat along with sweetness, a really good flavor. I will for sure be purchasing a bottle of that for home use just as soon as it's available. The baked beans were epic, clear over the top in deliciousness, in fact I would be willing to make the drive to Ankeny just for a side of those, yes, they are really that good.
Our server Taylor did a magnificent job of taking care of us, checking on us numerous times and very helpful in answering our questions and making suggestions. This was a very good experience, can't wait until hungry again for and excuse to return.
The Chicken Coop earned my coveted cleaned plate, or rather licked clean plate award, our server Taylor and the food were both clear off the charts in excellence.
We came in late with a large group, and they were still able to get great food and quality service.
Got our to go order wrong. Ordered a wrap, made it a sandwich. Asked for ranch with my daughters chicken, was told when I picked it up they put it in the To go box. Got back to the hotel, and there was no ranch, plus a honey mustard type sauce spilled all over the chicken but never should have been in the container in the first place. Fries were good. Got pork nachos and it didn't state it was BBQ, just that it was pulled pork, was not expecting for my nachos with queso, Pico, etc. To come slathered in BBQ too. Thought it would be better with the number of high reviews but we were seriously disappointed.
Nice place to meet and have lunch or dinner. Also family friendly and they have a good menu for kids as well. If you want to watch a game or sports, they have a bunch of TV's that make it easy to watch your event.
The wings were really good. Service could use some improvement in checking our drinks but overall he did a good job.
Typical sports bar atmosphere the food is so good lots of options from wings to burgers, pizza, salads, and more. There are lots of options for drinks for the alcohol lovers out there. If you go, you have to try the "Thunder Balls" jalapeño peppers wrapped in pepper jack cheese, chicken, then wrapped in bacon, then fried. It's absolutely amazing. I love the sweet dry rub, too. Service was a little slow, but they were busy when I was there, so I can't blame them. I recommend them if you're in the mood for great bar food and drinks.
I really enjoy this place when I go I don't like their bourbon Burgers the best but they need to put that back on the menu:
Wing special was nice. Our server looked like a lumberjack with his suspenders and was really enjoyable.
Ordered the Pepperjack Pepperoni pizza and thunderballs. Delicious. Will definitely go again.
The food is a solid 4.5 stars. The service is great. When this was Thunderhead we loved coming here. A solid spot for dinner. But when it changed to Chicken Coop there were some serious growing pains. I'm happy to say they are back to being solid again! We'll add this back to our regular rotation (:
Personally I do love chicken coop I usually go to the one in Grimes and they never fail to make me have a good time, but the one here in Ankeny, just save your time and money and don't go there.
