Miyabi 9 reviews
16 I stopped by today with my grandson for the wasushi lunch. There wasn't anybody waiting to seat us. And it was during the lunchtime rush.
When we finally got a table, the server just walked away. I was surprised that the place was half empty.
When I moved my napkin to the side, it was partially stuck to the table. So I put my hand flat on the table, and the whole thing was sticky.
That's when I decided to go somewhere else.
If you can't even keep the tables clean for the customers, I can't help but wonder how clean the kitchen is.
I really miss Mr. Miyabi. He was strict, and always had a help wanted sign in the window.
But the place was always clean, and the food was excellent.
My son wanted amazing sushi for his 18th birthday and so we took him here. We have a large family so there were 14 of us. I was worried we would be too much for the cozy place. I called beforehand and they made sure everything was ready as soon as we walked in. The food was amazing! The service was amazing! And my family had a wonderful time! Thank you so much for having us! Try the STT Roll!
Things started off rough for our visit with us showing up at 5pm only to be told by the restaurant they are doing a late open and we had to wait outside for 20 min. Then our appetizer apps we ordered were wrong. They were out of the first 2 things we wanted. But after all of that, the food we did get was lackluster and flavorless. I won't be back and I would advise anyone who plans on going to pick another restaurant or lower your expectations.
Food was dry. I had the chicken cutlet by default because they were out of both pork and beef. They open at 5 on Saturdays and they were late opening the doors. We had 5 people in our group. We were told the dumplings came in 5’s so we ordered those as appetizer and it only came with 4. One person who ordered sushi didn’t get theirs until the rest of us had our meals and were done.
Honestly not very good and pretty pricey, we went bc the reviews were great but we got sushi, chicken katsu, and their gyoza and it was arguably worse than grocery store sushi, the katsu was somehow already cold when it arrived when it’s a fried food that only came with steamed rice for $20. Gyoza was also not very good somehow. Staff was super nice though. No hate to staff.
Whenever we're in town, I love to visit Miyabi 9. When I lived in Des Moines, it was my go-to place. Wonderful staff and great food.
Quiet place for sushi when it’s late - we had the window table and it was cool to watch the people go by. Food was very good and wait staff was accommodating and helpful.
We enjoyed what we got but it seems they have a menu inconsistency issue or supply problem (which isn’t their fault). We order the Miyabi roll which should come with whisk leaf but we got lettuce. They didn’t tell us until the roll arrived. They were also out of toro and uni. And supposedly they have real wasabi but were also out of that.
Next time I’ll call ahead of time to check supply before driving all the way there. Otherwise, I feel the experience would be great and it’d jump pretty high on my list of places to frequent when I have a sushi craving. But currently Ninja in Waukee has most of these and they have real wasabi — never had an issue with supply when I go either.
I don't have a single positive thing to say. Leaving hungry and don't have the energy to explain the many reasons why you shouldn't waste your money here.
Nice small place to eat (quaint) friendly service food is tasty we had the lunch boxes and they were filling.
This place is always amazing with the food and the service. Without a doubt best sushi in Des Moines.
One of my favorite lunch spots in the East Village! Love their lunch boxes which they are kind enough to customize for me to make it vegan! Their tofu adashi is divine! Allen is the best waiter! I stop by here for lunch every other week! Highly recommend!
We went to Miyabi 9 for dinner on 4/1/23. Unfortunately, we experienced horrible service. The sushi roll arrived and had decent flavor. It was all downhill from there. After our entree did not come for 45 minutes, we asked for an update. We were told they were waiting for rice to finish cooking. After 20 minutes more, we asked for our check because we needed to go to another engagement. The server gave us a check and charged us for the entree even though we hadn't received it. We were told that the manager was not present. Another server gave us conflicting information about the delay. He then stated that he would take talk to the manager the next day and have them comp our bill. This never occurred.
Great sushi place but not all items tasted good. The Rainbow Sunrise was good.the rest okay. Overpriced for sure
We went here for lunch while in Des Moines. Great location, near the capitol, Rayguns, and the state history museum. The lunch specials were yummy and worth the cost. All five of us left full with two bento boxes and the sushi lunch. A simple little place and that's all I need.
Always love visiting this sushi place in the east village. Perfect light meal before a night out!
