Old Fort Madison

The men in the fort were dressed according to the time period (even tho it was ridiculously hot out) and were very informative and pleasant. Eugene had all the answers to our questions and is knowlegable in all things Old Fort Marion.

Cool place where there was a lot of information and folks dressed in period attire. Lots of history and things to learn. The lady running the gift shop was a little rough around the edges but helpful if you had any questions. Good place to stop by if you're in town.

Interesting! The historically dressed staff were all quite knowledgeable of customs and practices of the era. Enjoyed this!

Interesting if you like history. Employees wear costumes and tell stories. Many artifacts and examples of living conditions. Beautiful park location where we walked along the river and watched the bridge turn to allow boats down the river. We had lunch across the street at the local cafe. The food was better than we expected and the local people were very warm and friendly. Over all a very nice afternoon.

It was interesting and informative. Was surprised to learn it was a replica, after we had paid to see it. Guides were helpful.

Historical site very interesting very good views by the Mississippi River in Fort Madison. Give tours certain time of the year.

The staff here was wonderful and their knowledge of the fort history was truly impressive. Make sure you ask if they are giving demonstrations of a musket being fired when you come! Very cool!

I was lucky to join the living history weekend at Ft. Madison this past weekend. I had a wonderful time meeting the volunteers and the staff. I loved the buildings and the windows. I volunteer at Ft. Atkinson SHP located near Omaha, NE and we do not have nearly as much light in the barrack rooms.

I have to admit listening to the trains during the night and the mosquitoes were not so pleasant.

Fort not open yet but we walked around and peeked through the log fencing hopefully we will be able to make a return trip soon and will be able to get a look inside.

If you're interested in the War of 1812, this replica fort on the Mississippi River depicts life as it was then and the guides are knowledgeable and dressed in period clothing.

The tour was 8$ a person. It's self guided but there are costumed staff to answer questions. Had a great time, learned a lot, and got to see one reenacter fire a musket. There's also a lot of cool old documentation, so be sure to flip through the binders laying around.

The guides give a pleasant narrative of what life was like in a fort along the Mississippi, and also the eastern edge of the Louisiana purchase. It was not an easy life trading with local and unpredictable tribes.
