My brother, Kurt, and I did a thing and I have to share for those struggling with Restless Legs Syndrome or Neuropathy.
Kurt and I have dealt with RLS for 30 years (give or take a few months) and have tried different diets, the bar of soap in the bed, juices, supplements, infusions, not to mention the many types of prescription drugs over the years. Yes, the drugs helped but the side affects are NOT fun.
In June Kurt asked me if I’d go to Colorado with him, handed me a book to read, and told me that he’d done even more research and found someone who’d guarantee relief. He had spoken to the surgeon and was completely on board and it didn’t take me long to say yes. Relief! Yeah! Not what you think because we all know you can get legal marijuana there. I’ll admit, I tried gummies! No results, didn’t even get high. In all seriousness, if you have it, you’d understand why I tried. I wouldn’t wish RLS on anyone, not even my worst enemy! Doing anything to increase the value of life, absolutely yes! I’m in! We both had achy legs that in my best description felt as though someone had vise grips on them all day EVERY SINGLE DAY!
Us wanting to have a glass of wine or a drink with someone knowing that you won’t get sleep and will suffer even worse by doing so, sitting with friends and family only to find yourself up on your feet prancing around because you can’t keep still, and omgosh, church or.movie night? We would pray that we could make it through a day without people noticing the legs jumping or falling asleep because you had to take meds to get through the day. Every night was long, or should I say short because you can’t stop moving, you’re mentally going out of your mind, and you just have to get up to pace. Lack of sleep leaves you exhausted and unfocused, let alone crabby at times. I’ll admit it!
Early on July 4th, along with our spouses, we left Iowa and Mark drove us to Loveland, Colorado to our beautiful VRBO. July 5th we took a drive to Fort Collins to the Anderson Podiatry Center for our pre-op meeting with our surgeon, Dr. James Anderson, and his wonderful team. They spent 4 hours with all of us, explaining everything again on what they do, why they do, where they do, etc, etc. An ultrasound showed that we were great candidates for surgery showing that our nerves were indeed being pinched. Bedside manners were 10+ plus! We both had surgery on one leg the next day. The following week, the 11th we had a post-op/pre-op appointment and had surgery on the opposite leg the 13th. Post-op appointment was the 15th and Mark drove us home and we were comfy in our beds that evening. We both have had relief and I’m not sure about Kurt’s meds but I am done with pain meds and my RLS medication at night is 1/3 of what I had been taking and I am waking up in the morning on my own and not because of my legs. My back and sciatic nerve pain I’ve had since my car accident in 2008 has gone away as well. I can’t thank Dr. James Anderson and his team enough nor my brother. Thanks to our spouses too! What a wonderful nurse I have!
My legs are pretty scarred but I don’t care because you have changed my life! I can’t wait until I’m completely healed because if it’s this great now, the final healing will be beyond belief!
