White Pine Hollow State Forest reviews
8Nice hike, but slightly disappointed. When I was young, this was right in my back yard. Been many years since hiking here, didn't recognize a thing. Many of the original trails are gone, mostly following deer ruts.
This forest is nearly untouched by modern humans. Heavy forest and basically no trails, it is truly beautiful should you venture deep into the wild. Following a narrow and muddy trench down in elevation, my wife and I finally came upon what was the main waterway/creek. At the base of our journey down we found that the stream bed we had been following ended in a spring that fed the main stream. It's water was clean and ice cold. Following the main stream south we were met with towering limestone walls and an ancient stream with deep and crystal clear pools. It was an amazing walk although difficult due to the itch weed and thorns. Highly recommend.
Beautiful place for real hikers. No real trails so you have to be ready to make your own path. Truly taking you back to enjoying the forest as naturally as possible as well as the valleys and streams. If you're not a good hiker or Navigator then this will be a nightmare for you. Be prepared to bushwhack through Briar patches and other thorny areas. Wear grips on your shoes to make it up the inclines. Make sure you take freshwater with you because it's going to be a long day. After all is said and done, it is an amazing place where you can make your own way and takes more than one trip to explore the massive Park and all it contains. Plan on spending the entire day if you really want to see the beautiful sights, or take a tent and stay overnight like so many of us do. It's the only way to truly take in the natural beauty of this place.
True hiking, no trails just deer paths to follow. Be ready to orient yourself and plan your own route.
So things were looking great, then i see a red tailed hawk and it swoops by and picks up my yourkie and eats it whole. #badday
Beautiful trees, terrain, and sounds. We only explored a fraction of what was available, but thoroughly enjoyed what we saw. Very off the beaten path type camping and hiking. Stinging nettles are everywhere.would go again.
A very remote forest area with the last natural White Pine trees in Iowa. The east entrance has an old road bed one can follow for a ways. The South entrance you have only deer trails to follow and caution should be used as one can lose bearings once deep in the woods. Beautiful natural place.
Awesome place! Not many big fish and very difficult access with steep inclines to negotiate but I'm young. Majestically beautiful especially in late fall or winter. You definitely have to study the map before walking in so that you won't get lost.
