Dixon's Famous Chili Parlor reviews
21One of the greatest restaurants in Kansas City you can always go here and I'll tell you get some of the best chili ever or tacos used to be really good but the last few times I've gone in there tacos have been really nasty and greasy but other than that the restaurant is okay it's outdated it definitely 1982 I'd say but it still works
There are not many places that you can say you have eaten for 40 years and nothing (this is a good thing) has changed. McDonald's is successful because is the same food every time anywhere you go no matter what. That is what Dixon's is to most people. Its the same thing you have grown to love since you were a kid. I can remember eating here when I was a little kid with my grandparents. Vergne Dixon started Dixon in 1919 and his dream was to give his guests this same great story. Now fine generations later Dixon's is still doing just that.
I turned 40 this year and I still visit Dixon's as much as I can. These pictures are from a Tuesday night!
Dixion's is having the same issue that the rest if the world is with staffing. So don't be a butthead and expect the busiest place in Independence to keep up with 100's of customers at 7pm on a Tuesday night. Give them a chance and you will see the same great service you have come to know and love.
Dixion's is a family legacy and if you have not experienced it with your family your missing out! It might not be edgy. They might not have a new menu monthly. Heck you can't even say the food is to die for. But, you can expect a great family owned and operated resturant that serves chilli the way Mr. Dixion would have wanted all those years ago. You can expect the same great taste you have come to know and love and THAT my friends is well worth it!
I can't wait to say that I have eaten her for 40 more years! Keep it up Dixion's!
Well gotta be honest, never again. First the "chili" was ground beef and pinto beans in a saucer! That's it. Dry ground beef and pinto beans, ugh. No seasoning, no nothing. Yuck I ordered a cheese burger w/ a bowl of chili on the side. The burger was so thin I swear you could have seen through it. The waitress acted like everything was a bother. Probably cause no one tips after bad food. I do not understand how they stay in business. Don't waste your time!
Dixon's is not for everyone. But, it is the best in my opinion. You can style the chili your way. No tomato sauce. Yay! We finally got a server that did not tell us juicy meant meat grease. We know it is meat grease. That's why we ordered it juicy!
My sons and I made a sudden stop here as we were driving by and stopped since I remembered reading on out it before our trip to KC. We ate the Footlong Chili Dog w cheese and onion 9.99. Really glad we stopped. Chili was good. Next time in town I will want to try Chili Spaghetti. Server gave me a dirty plate as a second plate to share w my son. Simple oversight and got it replaced.
Paid for the all you can eat tacos and the waitress was absent minded I didn't even get my moneys worth. The worst part was they wasn't all that busy. The cashier made a joke about it and asked if i wanted a candy bar. Seriously why would i want a candy bar instead of food i left still hungry. This place has gone downhill.
I don’t do reviews often, but since Dixons is well known so wanted to leave input on my experience. It was my first time dining here even though I’ve drove by it for years. The inside was really nice and resembled it’s classical style which I like a lot but it’s in a terrible location tbh. Service was fast and friendly. I did take into consideration that they are understaffed like most places which I hardly noticed. It was around 7pm Thursday evening and not very busy thankfully. We both ordered Dixons chili and the extras we desired and I ordered a Taco as well. I found the Chili to be bland and nothing exciting as did the person with me and mine was barely warm almost cold. I didn’t expect it be fresh but still at least warm/hot like you’d think from Chili to warm you up on a cold day. The taco was pretty good but nothing above average and I will come back to enjoy those for the all you can eat! Pricing is okay and I understand it’s a family owned establishment which is awesome, but $3 for a soft drink is outrageous in my opinion especially with a outdated machine that only has the few basic Pepsi products. The server was fine. My only complaint is that we had to ask for menus. You shouldn’t expect everyone to be a regular and just show up with a notepad and ask what we would like. I think some updating to equipment and some new recipes would be very beneficial. If you’re famous for Chili then run with that and offer different and unique options for flavoring along with your regular.
Went for the tacos and they were alright. Their beef isn't seasoned so it is something you can make at home. The wait staff is kind of rude and take their time in helping you.
Dixon's has been a KC food staple for more than 100 years. So what are you reading reviews for? The chilli is more sweet than spicy, but they've got the heat if you want it. The tacos are fantastic, and the burritos will leave you needing a nap. It's all good, so don't sweat that part. Let your stomach choose, or order a few things and take out the rest. You won't be disappointed.
Excellent service. Menu is basic but with chili that good, they don't need to complicate it. My favorite is the chili dog. There's no question in my mind as to why this was President Truman's favorite restaurant.
The all you can eat tacos daily special was as good as always. Girlfriend had the burrito deluxe with Chili and she said it was delicious but couldn't eat all of it. Service was slow and spotty but rest was great
Well I had I think is chili with spaghetti mixed in with it they gave you onions and cheese to put in it it is awesome to eat I'll like it a lot anytime I'm hungry I would go there for it
Had a good time at Dixon's chili with my husband it was nice and quiet stopped by while we were in Kansas City after seeing the doctor I enjoyed all the tacos I could eat my husband had chili loved it although I did forget my card to get it punched
Took my daughter and her boyfriend there for her birthday. We're counting down famous places to eat one at a time. Started here. Chili with tamales was excellent. Service was quick. Head enough food leftover to bring home. Reasonably priced, I would recommend it to anyone for chili. Going to Peachtree next week. Town topic burgers Following next week then on two strouds and so on period going to enjoy all the iconic places in Kansas City.
#KansasCity Star recently posted the Top 10 essential restaurants of KC, and Dixon's was on the list. I'd never been there, so I went. Affordable comfort food in a friendly atmosphere. I'll be back!
I enjoy the Spaghetti Chile. When I moved to this area one of my neighbors treated me to the adventure of Dixion's Famous Chili. First Dinner invite from a Neighbor to a Landmark In Independence. It is located "just up the road from me", on 40 Hwy. They have carry out, and everything on their menu is very good. They have a big following of returning customers and is advertised as being the oldest family-owned restaurant in Kansas City.
An FYI. Harry S. Truman frequented Dixion's before, during, and after his Presidency.
My parents took me to the original location when I was young kid. Visiting here sure brought back memories. The food is still served hot and delicious!
Didn't know what to expect but hey, Truman ate here and loved it. Old school feel, a different take on Chili, which was delicious. Tamale also phenomenal. Worth the stop for sure.
I had the chili spaghetti. Although the chili was a little bit bland, there was chili powder and salt on the table which made lunch very good!
Came from NYC and loved the Chili and the pride in the food. Love the blue collar unpretentious setting. My server was Jaime and made all the right recommendations, she was super accomodating and Id be back due to the food + service =
