Elmwood Reclaimed Timber, Peculiar MO

We had them make on the beams, and mantles in our house. I also used them on a friend's house I was working on. They had sawn a few inches off the beams so they could sit tight against the sheetrock as well. Then gave us what was cut off to use for other areas in the house.

Sales rep was great. Timeline was fairly close to what was estimated.

We got some beams that, in the end look pretty cool, but the only reason I'm at 3/5 stars for the following reasons:

1. The grooves in the wood didn't quite match up quite right (see pictures). For the price we paid, we just expected them to have a better reveal in the corners. (I know each piece of wood has defects so I'm not expecting perfect, just expecting better for the price).

2. Some of the grooves were routed so thin that the edge of the wood just fell off when we took it off the pallet to install. The samples we received had much thicker edges (probably 1/8" - 1/4" thick) while the wood received ranged from 1/8" - 1/16" (yes, it was paper thin). So once again, for the price, I was expecting a little more consistent workmanship.

3. We were told they had wood wide enough to make it across our 18" beam. Just miscommunication on both our parts. They just glued three boards together to make that happen (which is what I was going to do, but I was under the impression they actually had a board 18" wide, or would at least stain it one color). Had I known they were going to glue boards together, I would have just done this myself, since I have the router bit they use to make the grooves for the pieces to snap together, and plenty of wood to glue together. Just to be clear, what they sent is cool, but not quite the look we were going for. I would have stained the bottom wide beam all one color if it was up to me. Luckily, it sort of matches the theme in our stairwell so we decided just to install it as is. Still looks cool.

Summary: In the end, it still looks pretty good. Not what we were envisioning, but still cool. For the price we paid, I would have liked the routing work to be a little more consistent. If the product was half the price, it would be a 4 star experience (due to the 18" beam having three different stained boards).

Edit: I'll change this to a 4/5 if Elmwood can give a few pointers on the best method to hide those seems a little better. (I'm cautions to try caulk or wood filler as it may leave a more obvious streak of coloration).

Edit 2: President called me personally and is sending product that should help hide any defects the wood may have. Will update after.

I just received the mantle I ordered from Elmwood, and it's absolutely perfect. Also, they got my order to me in no time, and everyone I've talked to was very nice and informative. I wouldn't go anywhere else, and I'll be buying much more in the future!

We were looking for a particular look to the reclaimed wood mantel- something pretty light in tone- no mortise indentations- custom size.etc. Tyler went through the trouble of hand selecting a mantel from the inventory outside- and sent us a photo beforehand. The mantel is perfect- exactly what we were looking for. He also gave us a price within our budget.
