Mercy Hospital South reviews
15I used to avoid this hospital like the plague when it was still called St Anthony's due to ER visits taking up to 18 hours just to get seen. In their defense, it's been the only decent hospital serving South St. Louis County and Jefferson County for decades. I had very serious neck surgery there with titanium plates put in, and the care couldn't have been better. They expanded their ER Department about 10 years or so ago and in the last few years have expanded the hospital itself greatly and they became part of the Mercy Healthcare system about 5 years ago. The ER wait times are still too long, but they are a Level I Trauma Hospital and for the most part everyone I know, myself included have received excellent care. If you are admitted as a patient, be sure to request housekeeping services daily as everyone knows hospitals are the worst places for infections and diseases to run rampant. A clean room will definitely help ward this off so don't be shy about asking for cleaning services.
My 77 year old female friend who has an extensive history of IBS was admitted on Saturday 10-21-2023 for severe gastritis. Today, Thursday 10-26-2023, she called her Gastroenterologist, whose office is there on campus, that she has been there since Saturday. They were audibly shocked. She had the call on speaker phone. Here's an example of what an unprofessional, interdepartmental disrespect and patient endangerment looks like. Transfer your loved one out of this facility ASAP if you care for them at all. There's no excuse for this policy. The nursing staff are good though despite the stressor of working here.
I wish I could give ZERO stars! This place killed my mom among other people I knew. How do you have a stroke while in a hospital and they don't have a clue? Better yet how do you go in to the ER from a car accident and have 2 broken legs but they don't realize it for 3 days that both are broken? That is only because I, as a family member, demanded they take an x-ray then magically they realize the other leg needed surgery too after doing surgery on the first leg! I would only take my worst enemy there.
I recently had a distressing experience with Mercy South that left me deeply disappointed and concerned about the level of care provided to patients with serious medical conditions. My sister was admitted to this hospital due to a severe medical issue, and the entire experience was nothing short of a nightmare.
From the moment we arrived at the hospital, it was evident that something was amiss. The staff seemed disorganized and disinterested in providing the necessary care. While the hospital was not visibly busy, it seemed that they were severely understaffed, and patients called for help for at least 30 minutes before receiving assistance.
In the case of my sister, she was told that she had a serious heart condition while the doctors did do tests and provided some explanation of the process, upon discharge they provided a list of medications with no explanation of what they do or any interactions to be aware of. Instead of providing the first set of medications from the hospital pharmacy they instructed her to pick them up at a retail pharmacy that ultimately did not have the medications and said it would take 72 hours to obtain. When we called the Mercy South pharmacy and told them about this, they seemed unbothered. That is, until we pushed for them to call the retail pharmacy, take back the prescription, and provide the medication to us on the same day. This all felt crazy. I could not believe that the staff were totally ok with my sister being left without essential medications for an extended period—this is completely unacceptable. The lack of urgency and concern for a patient's well-being was shocking.
What was even more concerning was the lack of communication and consultation during the patient's discharge. We were given no guidance on my sister’s condition, treatment plan, or follow-up care. It felt as if they were more interested in getting her out the door than ensuring her well-being. Also, my sister is now on a heart monitor, which instructs us to contact her doctor if her heart rate dips. Mercy South provided no numbers to access any of her doctors and told us that we need to call 911 if anything happens. Again, it’s as if they do not offer the level of personal care that could ensure that my sisters’ life is preserved during a crisis, post-discharge.
This level of care is not only subpar; it's downright dangerous, especially for individuals with serious medical conditions. Hospitals are meant to be places of healing, support, and professional care. Sadly, this Mercy South Hospital fell significantly short of those expectations. I cannot emphasize enough how crucial it is for patients to receive proper and timely medical attention when they are in a vulnerable state, and this hospital failed to deliver on that fundamental obligation.
I would strongly advise anyone in need of medical care to look elsewhere for a facility that prioritizes patient safety, offers appropriate consultation, and ensures that necessary medications are available when required. Our experience with this hospital was a harrowing one, and I hope that sharing it will prevent others from enduring the same ordeal.
Dr Schuppan is highly skilled obviously because every time I see her she fixes my back. I would rate her as one of St Louis best and recommend her.
Nurse was rude as hell was having full-blown panic attack and wouldn’t even give me my anxiety medicine. I’m prescribed.
My care team for my procedure was fantastic. Particularly Nurse Jodie was warm, kind, empathetic, and willing to help myself and my husband in any way possible. She is a terrific asset to Mercy South. My OBGYN, Dr. Campbell and her surgical team were wonderful as well. Thank you for making an unfortunate situation as easy, quick and painless as possible.
The staff was extremely professional and this procedure went smoothly. While the results were not great news, I do feel like I have a better understanding of what is wrong.
Thank you.
My MRI was a very good experience at Mercy. My healthcare professional was extremely attentive and did her best to make me comfortable for this test.
Got a very quick appointment and the care was great. The only thing I could say is that they have moved since the last time I was there and I was not informed.
I would give zero stars! It’s very disgusting in the room.the room had no bathroom.the nurses were not very nice to my grandpa who is the kindest person and very quite. I would not ever want a loved one here again.
The staff has been kind but the ER and the observation rooms in the heart hospital were filthy. The ER bathroom had poop on the seat, bloody tissue on the floor, pee on the floor and that is where I was suppose to give a urine sample. We did mention it was dirty and someone did finally clean it. However the rooms were very dirty as well. I may not return in the future due to the filth.
We spent more time sitting in the waiting room than actually being treated! We never saw a dr, only a NP who was in the room a total of 10 mins and my daughter was giving an ibuprofen and told to follow up with her primary dr. But we got handed an estimate of over $1900 for sitting 7hrs and an ibuprofen. She had 2 tubes of blood drawn and given a warm blanket so I guess that justifies $1900. We were advised to go to the ER from her primary which we could have had the same results just sitting in her office, the way this hospital treated us! NEVER COMING BACK TO THIS LOCATION OR ANY OTHER MERCY HOSPITAL
I feel my health is improving because of Mercy South and the wonderful staff. They are very professional, friendly, respectful, knowledgeable and answer any questions I have. My doctors are with Mercy as well and the care, understanding and knowledge let me know I am in great hands in regard to my health and any treatment or medicines I might need. Mercy is the only Hospital that I would go to because of their caring, knowledge, and informative Doctors, Nurses, Staff, and Volunteers.
Consistent quality care and kindness is shown from the Mercy team. Thankful for all of them!
