There are a few reasons for a rating of less than 5 stars. First, to get to the cabin via the directions given to us from recreation.gov it does not inform you about how a section of the road has a locked gate due to spring conditions. That sign says that the road won't reopen until sometime in May. We were there mid April. We somehow managed to find another roadway in but when we got to the locked gate going into Bend Guard, the combination code lock that you are to use was just dangling on the chain. There were 2 other keys in place (1 for the Forest Service, the other for Flathead Electric) both of which require a key to open the gate. Hmmm, once again we managed to find a way to get in but it was off road in places and we wouldn't recommend doing that. We went for a bike ride, got cell service and called the Forest Service in Plains. Explained what had happened as we were worried about the folks coming in after us. The person remarked that she would get things taken care of. A rep did come the next day, fixed the lock situation so we could at least exit properly and remarked that he thought recreation.gov was made aware of the road closure. However we still are not sure where the disconnect really is/was - With the Forest Service? With Recreation.gov? Or perhaps a combo of both? !? !

Other than that... It's well stocked with cleaning supplies, etc.and the renovation that has been done is fantastic. It's a really nice place to stay if you can get in, lol.

I was expecting more of a public access, historical site. You can rent this, these cabins for vacation. Other than the fact that it's not accessible like I expected, the drive ended up being interesting as we saw a mama griz with her two cubs on the way out

This is the best equipped cabin I have ever stayed in. The only downside was there wasn’t a lot to do in the area for me. You could go to Glacier on a long day trip. Cabin has everything.

Amazing location with an over achieving cabin! The cabin was huge, accommodating up to 16 people, between 4 bedrooms. Full electricity, hot water, heat, huge kitchen, 2 bathrooms with heated showers. Kitchen has 2 stoves, tons of cabinets for storage, and a lot of necessities on site, such as some cups, dishes, pots and pans, basic clean up items, eating and cooking utensils.etc.large fire pit with fixed benches to enjoy and an outdoor picnic table. Walk just off the property to find the nearby river/creek that is barely outside of the cabin. Wood is not kept or stockpiled on site, but surrounding forests made it easy to collect needed wood for fires. Saw tons of wildlife right in the yard. Beautiful. Great cabin, great experience.
