6Makoshika is an amazing gorgeous state park, and cains campground is a good jumping off point to explore the park. There is a hiking trail just across the road to hike into the badlands. The campground is small with spots close to each other, but as long as neighbors are respectful it is a great spot.
Very nice little campground. But because it has no hookups you will get the tourists who hide in their campers much of the day and run their NOISEY construction site generators all day!
Tiny campground on the edge of town with a pit toilet and potable water. Tent sites on one side, RV on the other. (1-10) Basically boondocking with great views. We reserved ahead and arrived to discover site 11 was not set up for a camper at all. We would have had to set up on the road next to the site but another camper had taken our tag off the pole and set up his site on ours. (he was drunk) No ranger on duty or host to help. We moved further down and camped in the grass. Be aware there is no one policing this campground after 5pm.
We had the teepee site which is right by the road. People were going in and out of this park well after 10pm so it was noisy. The trails are not well marked in this park. The roads are rough driving in spots. Beautiful scenery.
Campground was clean and had good facilities. It was a bit frustrating being right next to the main road through the park, but it also wasn’t a heavily trafficked road so it didn’t become a problem. The trail to the sunset viewpoint was at the edge of the campground, which was very handy.
This great spot to relax the sites are on paved road and great places to explore
