Back in 1998 while I lived in Newark, I had the opportunity to stay at The YM/WCA. As it was a temporary stay during Christmas time. I had a5yr old little boy and a8 month old baby girl. It was a last minute thing that I ended up there. Much to my surprise It really turned out to be an experience I wouldn't soon forget.
The staff there at the time was so tentative towards myself & my children. We were treated so kind, they had gifts, Santa Clauses, and everything a child could ask for at Christmas time! Thank You all for the Hospitality and kindness

I give this place 2 stars for the handful (or less) of the people who work there who actually tried to help and make a difference in the families who are struggling. However, with that said there were unfathomable issues with the way this facility is run that people with the authority to change it seem to turn a blind eye. My family and I were residents here for about a month and a half when the pandemic hit hard and we were jobless, homeless and have our two small children under 3. Food was almost always stolen, bathrooms were perfect place to catch any other disease due to poor maintenance, rules that are clearly posted by each elevator yet are subject to change based off of whichever counselor was on duty that shift. Which speaking of these "counselors" on particular one had an issue with my husband for no particular, rational reason. 1st week with us being there he had said a remark that was meant to be funny to me about the use of a microwave and the counselor on duty Ms. McGuiver immediately assumed he was directing this comment to her and she took offense and began to be confrontational to him. There would be two more incidents with this Ms. McGuiver where she would ignore him speaking to her, not open our door, removed him from our floor for over 1,5 hours at 8pm while I had my children in the room. The final tipping point was when she again call security on my husband for playing music while he cooked my family and other family dinner, accusing him of breaking up the fun she was having with the other older children making tic tock videos. Mind you she had no face mask on, ignored social distancing rules, and was already playing loud music and having a large group of people in the kitchen area. Long story short I did not stand by and intervened when she was confronting my husband and security showed up where we were both threatened to be removed from the floor and directed to me if I wanted to "throw hands with her". I am deeply appalled by her actions in the month and a half my family was there and had spoken to Mr. Abdoul to take some action to correct thus behavior. I hope someone implements change there because families and individuals who are already in a tough situation do not deserve to be treated as such. Ms. McGuiver should not be a counselor at the YMCA or work in any facility where in the job description entails to be HELPFUL and RESPECTFUL to people in need.

For shelter residents: dirty, roaches, mice, no a.c. In summer time for homeless residents, only paying customers, so its blistering hot; i watched a baby get hospitalized. So many fights and people dont get kicked out for it and that's a personal safety concern. Write ups for complaints arent taken seriously. Any fixes are only done when its inspection time. Food gets stolen all the time. Bathrooms are BEYOND disgusting and unsanitary. We once found a Bag of heroin in the bathroom. There are 2 bathrooms on each floor, so its only 4 showers for 30 families per floor.

Okay so these people are incredibly rude. I called their number to ask about the family package. I know what my husband and I would be doing but I wanted to know how will my child would benefit from the package, because if there isn’t much for her then I would only pay for a package for two. The girl didn’t know how to answer anything I felt like i was speaking in a different language because she couldn’t answer anything I asked her. Then she passes the phone to a rude guy who tells I’m taking up her time because she works at the front desk, that the time I spent talking to her I could’ve went and get information in person. What? ! How rude and I was only on the phone for like 2 minutes with her. Rude rude rude! The lost a potential customer. They really need to train their people, and have them learn all the information, because what’s the point of having a phone number!

I cannot recommend this YMCA as it is not well managed. In Q1 2017, during listed open pool hours, the pool was closed just as much as it was open. When I brought this problem up to their management, as a paying customer, I was ignored.

Be sure to call ahead if you plan to swim. Otherwise you may show up with your swimsuit and no pool to swim in.

I will still go to YMCAs, but not the Newark YMCA. Having said that, the Rutgers Newark gym is open to the public and very reasonably priced.

I'd been a member on/off for a number of years. When I finally rejoined, it was like coming home. I had a good workout at the gym and I felt at peace afterwards. I plan on making this a regular thing from now on!

Freaking awesome I stopped by while waiting to drive back to California. The steam room was sooo warm. I had a good sweat. I'm really hoping people were just nice and not gay. I'm just a guy getting centered with Gods help at the Y. Ubered it in and out. They sell Chinese food right in the building. Great place. POOL CLOSED THO?

My family visited this location for the first time. The building is need of an upgrade. The greeter was professional and knowledgeable. The check in process was chaotic because we had to fill out forms and there were about ten people standing at the desk and only one person behind it doing her best to handle everyone. She did a good job with it. The pool was smaller than I thought and one of the life guards were terrible and rude. I will not be returning.
