A Taste of Shanghai reviews
12Awesome, authentic shanghainese food! Soup dumplings are a must. Very great prices and credit cards are accepted!
Food is high quality and delicious. The menu is abundant with many authentic dishes that I would find on the streets in Shanghai. Highly recommend the fermented rice dessert, scallion pancakes, and soup dumplings!
I got the fried dumplings and a vegetable dish. The dumplings were not good and my other dish had no flavor. I would not reccomend this place if you are wanting dumplings. It also was way too expensive for the amount of food and quality.
The best Shanghai cusine I have ever tried. It is very authentic and much better than some restaurants which have the higher score. If you would like to try the authentic Shanghai home cooking, definitely check out this restaurant.
Love the pan fried pork buns, xiao long bao (steamed soup pork dumplings), stir fried rice cake with strands of pork n Napa cabbage, tiny wonton soup
very authentic Shanghainese cooking, plus everyone that works there is Shanghainese including owner
All the China Eastern (shanghai based) who stay at Hyatt Place come here to eat as soon as they arrive
Authentic Shanghai restaurant which has been here for 2 decades, the owner, chef and staff are mostly Shanghainese, they want to bring the taste of hometown to New York. Soup dumplings, family style dishes are very good.
Went for brunch around 12. They were out of soymilk+you tiao, unfortunately. We ordered some typical breakfast dishes: xun yu, crab soup dumplings, scallion pancake, sheng jian bao, nian gao, small wonton, and a soup whose name escapes me.
Xun you was a bit tough. Most things, in general, were a bland and could have used some salt. Soup dumplings were acceptable but not exceptional in either direction, amount of crab taste varied in each dumpling. Scallion pancake had good texture but was light on actual flavor. Same with the soup. Small wonton soup was bland, wontons had a concentrated flavor that seemed processed compared to those I had in china. Slight shrimpy taste which was good. Nian gao was not bad, but it had white pepper which we personally don't like. Would recommend for others, though.
Sheng jian are your typical sheng jian outside of China. They're not real sheng jian, and taste like a pork mantou that's been pan fried, because that's exactly how this restaurant serves them. They don't taste bad, but they're not authentic. I don't think there are any places in NYC that serve authentic sheng jian anymore, though. Good flavor on the filling for these because of their base as a pork mantou with gravy.
Service was not amazing, not terrible either (we ordered in Chinese, if that matters). 15% tip automatically included. Vinegar for soup dumplings came in a bowl (? !) rather than a dish, and it seemed to be plain Chinkiang vinegar rather than the vinegar+ginger you may find in some other shanghainese places, or the light vinegar I've had in China. Also no spoon given which combined to make eating the soup dumplings more annoying than usual. Decor is not good and there's piles of random stuff everywhere, not very polished.
Overall, wouldn't return here. There's a lot of better options in Flushing to get Shanghainese food-we came because all the rest were full and this had space
No line, pretty cheap, food is ok. Not sure anything was really gluten free; I had the fried egg rice. "Shanghai special soup noodle was very plain, but the soup dumplings and crab dumplings were good. "-Zheng They included the 15% tip on our check too.
The food was not bad but the service was very poor. The staff members were impolite and looked down on us when we asked questions (it was our first time, and after that experience our last time, there). It was also surprising when they automatically charged us 18% gratuity on the bill but I suppose that was why they did not care about the low quality of their customer service. Avoid this place at all costs.
Very subpar; watch for a 15% tip that they may automatically include (even if there are only 2 of you) ; seafood with pan-fried crispy noodles had almost no flavor; the soup dumplings (we had pork and also crab) had little soup inside and skins that are too thick, they're more like dumplings you steam or fry
The food is authentic and tasty, however the service is very poor. I would like to recommend the crab/pork soup dumplings, they are very good.
Warning, medium spicy is a fire hazard. Order at your own risk. Everything here is super spicy. Ox tongue tast amazing, along with razor clams.
