Aldo Sohm Wine Bar reviews
18Amazing wine bar with great selections. Great place to hang out with friends, coworkers, or family.
Hmmm, I sit here unsure if some of my criticisms of Aldo Sohm Wine Bar are fair. It is a very small, loud but intimate space with guests crammed into a variety of bar tables/stools, couches, and a few regular tables tucked away.the "Intimacy" was a bracing reality check for one who hasn't ventured out much since the pandemic began nor has spent much time in a real dining room in nearly two years. True to it's name, this IS a wine bar as evidenced by the SEVEN page wine list. However, the sheer size and quality of the wine list completely overshadows the small food menu. As you would expect from this restaurant group, this is an excellent wine list, worthy of the best rooms in the city but come on guy's.folks need a half hour to digest it before they can consider making a choice and only if you don't have more than a few involved in the decision. It is also a very expensive list with mark-ups that boggle the mind. I get it. Location, location, location. Their expenses must be astronomical, however some glasses and bottles were nearly TWICE what you might pay at a good restaurant outside of Manhattan. I wonder if the food is meant to be a star here or only a compliment to the wine because it was clear from our visit that Aldo Sohm Wine Bar is a place for grazing and NOT a place for dining. Generally speaking, the food was good. The Artichoke and Apple salad was fine, but the apples were lost in the tart citrus dressing. It's apple season, and in my opinion apples should standout. The Roasted Spiced Carrots “Façon Marrakech” was very tasty and while the carrots were tender and flavorful it seemed to be lacking the anticipated Moroccan spices. The Crispy Duck was just that and by all accounts, delicious. My wife enjoyed the Vegetarian Bolognese as did I the Short Rib (although I felt at $34, the portion was very small). Unfortunately the Tarte Flambee' with bacon and caramelized onions was an unexpectedly poor representation of what can be a very satisfying dish. This version is basically a large, round cracker, brushed with some sort of sauce (is it a Soubise?) spread on it with a sprinkle of chopped bacon. I didn't really see any caramelized onion, which led me to wonder if the sauce was an onion Soubise? As you'd expect, they have a nice selection of charcuterie, and a smaller printed cheese list but for some reason the chef curates "The Tower" with cheese that isn't on their published list, which seems a little strange. Generally speaking the food was good but the portions small and I encourage the staff to guide your guests more through the menu selection process and let us know if portions are small. One of our friends ordered the Spicy Lamb Merguez for her entrée. She didn't order an appetizer and it wasn't until it arrived that she realized it was a small appetizer or sharing plate. So are my criticisms fair? Perhaps. Would I return or encourage others to give it a try? Perhaps, but with the understanding that wine is the focus, food is just the compliment and grazing is the order of the day.
Casual wine bar menu and vibe especially outside and more intimate, mid-century modern vibes inside. The inside space wasn't too big. There's a wide variety of wines you can select from with a bottle of wine ranging from 60-400+. Small plates are good. We got their 3 cheeses which came with jams and mini baguettes. Their bruschetta was unique and there cherry tomatoes very flavorful. Truffle fries were good as well. I had to wait a good 45 mins.for a seat in the evening.
From the entrance to the bar, the courteous and knowledgeable service of the staff and the quality of the food, this space elevates your senses.
Was disappointed with the somewhat limited selection of wines by the glass - and overpriced for the size of the pour. Did not try the food, so cannot comment on that.
Pretty good wine selection! Food was also pretty good. Got the meat and cheese board, grilled avocado (okay), roasted cauliflower (good), burrata, and truffle fries (good).
When you pay the same price for a glass as you would pay for the bottle at the dealer/shop the ambiente needs to be perfect. It‘s not.
We went here for a birthday and it was perfect! The environment has low lighting and a warm ambiance, great for a nice meal out with friends, coworkers, or a date night. The pasta was a little too al dente for me but overall it was deliciously homemade and fresh.
This is a great place for happy hour hang out. The tables and chairs are loungey and comfy. They offer game boards if you really want to chill-lax and hang. And the drinks will keep your body temperature at a nice 65 degrees for the rest of the evening! You will not get cold!
This was a great way to start a fabulous night for two wine enthusiasts. The staff is knowledgeable and the selection is fantastic.
Wine is ok but ordered the $20 foie gras and it is NOT foie gras, not even sure it’s even liver!
And baked Camembert is more like a fondue than a baked camembert.
Disappointing!
A small but beautiful room with high ceilings houses a fantastic selection of interesting and well priced list of wines by the glass, as well as a carefully curated bottle selection. The staff is well educated and helpful, and the menu of light bites - especially the charcuterie and cheeses - pairs perfectly with the grapes. Highly recommended.
Great wine list fun small plates and a wait staff that loves wine. The tarte flambé was good almost as good as Alsace. Loved the carrot dish and the short rib. End with fromage though.
Nice place to meet up for drinks. Wine is good. The little plates are fine, but not amazing; their food clearly isn't their strong suit.
Fantastic spot in midtown near times square to get perfectly cooked food, an incredible selection of wines and impeccable service. Pay more reasonable prices to get the skills like you would across the way at Le Bernardin.
Warning: finance bros and ladies frequent this spot post work but it clears out around 9 when they go home to Westchester or CT.
Differently from Le Bernardin, that is actually next door, this place is totally worthy. Aldo Sohm is a genius and wrote what is to be the best book for newbies on wine. I had the amazing opportunity to share some words with him here. The place is well furnished, comfortable, and the wine list plus the appetizers are truly amazing. I would keep returning to this place whenever in NYC.
The wine options are ample enough as well and the price is very reasonable. Didn't try the food.
If you like to drink wine and would like to have a lounge to enjoy it with friends, you have to come to this place.
New amazing find! Very open space, chic but casual atmosphere, great location on a romantic hidden block, great service, and best of all great wine and charcuterie.
