Amy Ruth's reviews
17Outstanding service. Food left much to be desired. I had the turkey wings which tasted as if they were fully cooked, stored in a refrigerator or freezer and warmed over to order. I can't explain it, but I tasted like "freezer" (yes, that's a taste, lol) The bone of the wing was also still ice cold to the touch. The meat certainly falls off the bone but that's bc they were fully cooked in the past, frozen at night, and reheated, over and over and over everyday. Also note, they do not have a full bar. Only beer, wine and mimosa's. Not a big deal. First and last time. Would not recommend. Yes, turkey wings take FOREVER (like hours) to cook, but I suggest parcooking them and allow them to finish the way every morning.
3* (~$30)
The chicken is tasty, but expensive. The portions are abundant, I paid for the hazing, but the place is really worth it if you ask for a portion for every two, or two for every three, otherwise, you're going to have to scratch your pocket. As for the accompaniments that include you, unless you already know them, don't risk it: French fries and coleslaw are worth it.
The place is quite austere, the toilets without paper and the service is correct.
Try it and judge for yourself.

He said he’d give his food 3.5 stars. Mine was definitely 1. The chicken was DRY. I mean like leather. White meat can be juicy but this was worse than well done steak. The waffle was the only half way decent thing on my plate. The chicken wasn’t even seasoned. I’ve had better in dumpy BK.
The food and restaurant CONTINUES to be excellent. I wanted some fried chicken and it was scrumptious. I had yams, collards and Mac n cheesy and the portions were enough for 2 servings. Cornbread was hot and butter melted perfectly. Waitress was superb. I will definitely come again.
Still top rated and great tasting dishes! Hasn't failed me over the years. A must and always a go-to when I'm in Harlem!
Must try. Smothered Turkey Wings, Fried Jumbo Wings, Candied Yams, Collard Greens, Rum Cake and My Favorite-Peach Cobbler!
Fantastic pancakes and a great waffle. Loved the salmon croquettes. Will be back next time in back in NYC.
The food is delicious and authentic. If this were just a take-out establishment I'd give it five stars.
The service is the slowest I've seen. We go there every few weeks, so it wasn't an off night. Even when we're there off-peak and it's half empty, the wait staff seems to be busy elsewhere. (It seems an intentional understaffing)
Finally, the check comes with the customary assistance to figure out a 17% and 20% tip. But the math is wrong. So, if you're not doing the math, you end up paying overinflated tips! They suggested that 20% of my $59 bill was $21. It's a built-in scam to cheat the math impaired.
Enjoy the food, be prepared for a long wait, and if you can't figure out a 20% tip, in your head, use the calculator on your phone.
What to say about this extraordinary place.
While in Harlem, don't miss this superb brunch at Amy Ruth's.
One of the best for me at all levels, price, quantity, quality and atmosphere.
I love it's authentic place the staff and top quality kindness service.
Be careful, the portions are really big.
This is a belated review. I had popped in to get a proper southern breakfast and got exactly what I needed. Over-easy eggs, cheese grits and catfish. When I ordered the waitress gave me a smile and an approving nod - like she'd just about had it slinging waffles all morning. Don't overlook this combo! True southern soul eats.
This spot has been my go-to restaurant whenever I have the craving for soul food. Most or all the dishes are named after notable and / or historic black figures. We ordered the cheesy grits and shrimp as well as chicken and waffle. Friendly and quick service. All dishes are affordable and delicious. Sunday brunch is usually crowded, so pack some patience; it's worth the wait.
Amy Ruth's is a win for me.
Exceptional soul food. Delightful service. Beautiful and inspirational art all around the restaurant. I am a regular and came to kick off my Juneteenth celebration! A staple in Harlem I love Amy’s! Famous Harlem staple.
The food here was so good. The best chicken and waffles I have ever had.
What I ordered was fried chicken, mac and cheese, cheesy grits, waffles, and the chocolate cake.
The fried chicken and waffles were second to none, no question about it. Mac and cheese wasn't the absolute best I have had but definitely up there in quality.
The corn bread they included with the meal was crazy good. It was the perfect corn bread.
Definitely worth going here if you are thinking about it.
I ordered the beef ribs with a side of string beans and collard greens. My order also came with the cornbread. The beef ribs were so tough and over cooked that they were difficult to eat. The sides and the cornbread were great but the meat definitely fell flat especially for $30!
Overall great experience great service, and great music. Only complaint is the ribs being really really fatty
A fairly authentic place, from my personal perspective and as a Latin American tourist, the staff is not at all warm. I knew from reviews that they offer cornbread to diners, which in our case never happened, perhaps they imagined that we did not know and did not consider offering it. In the end as an experience if you are a tourist and want to know, well, you can consider it. If not, then it is not essential either, it might not be the best experience in general. The restaurant does not seem to need tourists.
I had the fried catfish with grits, black eyed peas with a nice side of cornbread. My mother had short ribs and I took home some red velvet, cake pineapple coconut and cake sweet potato pie. The food was delicious and my server name Tasha was magnificent.
Cam to Harlem to celebrate my bothers 60th bday & he recommened this place. We had the fried shrimp, BBQ ribs, fried chicken, beans & rice, collard greens, & potato salad, croquets & waffles-Delicious!
