Barney Greengrass reviews
15The food might be amazing but the bagels are terrible. Katz has great pastrami but horrible bodega rye bread. Barney Greengrass has great smoked fish and appetizing but the bagels are horrible. They broke a bagel cardinal sin - they toasted it. Which is blasphamy for an institution like Barney Greengrass. They also added some big healthy seed like an Oat seed or something youd see in whole grain bread. I should've taken a pic because its a seed you'd never find in an everything bagel back in the day. But lately places have added it. Barney Greengrass should be embarrassed such a legendary place would serve horrible bagels. THey must know their bagels suck that's why they toast them.
If you can deal with quick service and cramped quarters, welcome to a gem of the UWS. Delicious jewish breakfast items. A must.
Always a gastronomical delight! Great delivery to our homes but on Long Island NY and Marco Island FL
The sturgeon, onions and eggs has to be ranked as one of the most delicious egg dishes on the planet–if not the universe. Our toasted poppy seed and pumpernickel bagels with cream cheese, onions, tomatoes and lots of sturgeon were simply fabulous. But who would expect anything different from the King of Sturgeon? It's been a while since we've been there. What a thrill it was to be back and exciting to be in New York and eating in your terrific establishment.
The food here is pretty good. I ordered the bagel with lox. I have had better bagels at other places in the city.
Super busy but efficient service on a Sunday morning.
Got a pumpernickel bagel with whitefish salad to go, and was in and out in under 10 minutes.
Cash only, and would recommend knowing what you want to order before going up to the counter!
Good service. No high pressure. High prices which would be worth it if the food was as good as it was years ago. Unfortunately it seems they are living on their reputation. Goyim probably won't notice, as evidenced by the many good reviews. The average Bris or Bar Mitzvah has better fish. I guess you can't go back again.
You don't get more NYC than this. Consistently delivers the goods. Be prepared for long lines if you are there prior to a Jewish holiday.
Always fresh sturgeon and salmon. Breads, bagels and pastries are fresh daily. Over the years I’ve tried just about every dish and they are all good. Interior decor is old school, feels like you stepped back in time a bit. Plenty of outdoor seating with heaters now. It’s cozy and staff are typical NY. Cash only. One star off for cleanliness.
Had an amazing experience here this morning!
Everyone who works here is so kind and funny! They are what make this place so special.
We ordered bagela and lox and it was delicious.
I highly recommend eating here!
Really great experience. We arrived on a Sunday after church and while there was a line, we waited only about 20 min for a table inside. The staff are all extremely nice and helpful. Our waitress was more than happy to give suggestions on what to order. All in all, the food was good. Latkes- not on the menu- we’re outstanding. I got eggs with a side of sturgeon and my husband got the triple decker sandwich with sturgeon and nova. Both were pretty good but not outstanding. For those three items and two coffees, our bill was almost $80. This place isn’t cheap. We got a matzo ball soup to go that was pretty reasonable for the size- $10. It was fine.
All in all I recommend this place as somewhere to try because it’s an UWS institution. Not sure we’re dying to go back simply because of the price, but I don’t regret going. Should be in the neighborhood again and hungry, we’d probably pop in for some to-go items.
VanityFair, Novembre '21 says. 'the 113 year old UWS deli & geaux to smoked fish joint for NY's media elite'. Like David Geffen & Allen Grubman.hmmm.jus' an fyi y'all.come for ze specialty niche items = lox, sturgeon, nova, cream knishes, matzo, whitefish.mucho respecto Gary: unstoppable!
NYC icon you can’t miss. Everything is tasty and authentic. If you get the eggs with salty lox, know that it’s super salty (but delish!). And say hello to owner Gary behind the counter. #25MostMemorableMeals.
Another great visit with matzo brie, sammys and eggs but no blintzes in stock? Weird but will check back next week.
