Canopus Beach Complex / Fahnestock State Park reviews
9 Great park to visit, many different trail choices, trails are well marked and we'll kept.
Really great to have a park near by, and dog friendly too!
The water was full of goo, but a lot of ducks were around which was really fun and heartwarming to have, then I cooked them for dinner, yummy food
Very nice small lake with clean sandy beach. The water is clean and doesn’t smell - not sure why some reviews say that! We didn’t see any turtles even though we looked around the dock. There is seaweed, but hello, it is a lake. I wore water shoes while swimming, but I was the only one in my group who did that. There is a concession stand with a little store attached, picnic tables, bathrooms, and changing rooms with showers. They also have row boats for rent by the hour. The beach doesn’t allow radios which makes for a peaceful day. We did bring a small speaker for our area which didn’t seem to bother anyone. They have charcoal grills available to use, but we packed a picnic lunch. Canopus Lake is a nice option if you live in the city and want a nearby lake. We live in Riverdale and it took a little less than an hour to drive there. We didn’t do any hiking but there is supposed to be a 1.5 mile hike around the lake. Maybe next time.
White AT trail around Canopus Lake is a good half day hike. Lots of downed trees- mind the markers. Decent elevation gain.
Nice area to hangout are pack lunch. Gross water we didn't swim but the kids did. Btw a Huge alligator snapping turtle lives under the dock where you swim.
Lots of parking. Reasonably priced. Clean beach that's maintained and clean bathrooms. Also a small shop for beach items and snacks.
Great for hiking in all seasons including a nearby winter park for x-country skiing and snowshoeing.
I love coming here in the winter to go cross country skiing. The irony is, I've never been here in the summer and today it's just warm enough so I can enjoy the view of the lake while skiing. The staff is courteous and parking is easy. They just got new equipment this winter - even better quality than before.
