I would not recommend this animal shelter. I came in to visit hamsters planning to adopt. I visited the hamsters twice a week for 3 weeks during the adoption process. They required my landlord’s permission (weird for hamsters, but okay). They called and left a message saying I was looking to adopt a cat. My landlord called back and declined. He was very upset with me and thought I snuck behind his back to adopt a cat which he made clear he was not okay with. I called the shelter upset and they promised to call and “fix it”. During my visiting process I asked the vet to check one of the hamster’s eyes as they were very bulgy and unhealthy looking. The office called back and said the vet said they were fine. I called back to confirm they were looked at a second time (not just during intake) and the receptionist rudely said “I already told you yes”. Since adopting, Beefy has been to two vets who have confirmed he is completely blind and his eyes are not healthy or okay… Then I got a call the next day saying they’d called my landlord twice and hadn’t heard back. I told them that wasn’t true and reexplained the situation. The called and told my landlord it was hamsters, but it did not fix the tension or distrust their mistake caused. The paperwork went through and I signed up to adopt and pick up 2 of the 4 hamsters on a Monday morning. I explained that I might need to postpone if their supplies didn’t come in on time for any reason. That day, the shelter posted on their Instagram page encouraging people to adopt one or even four of the hamsters… Why would they do that when I was accepted to adopt two of the four already? Of course, the supplies were delayed but I went in at my scheduled time anyway to handle and play with the hamsters. They asked if I knew which ones I hoped to adopt. At this point I was angry. Does anyone communicate in this shelter? ! I picked up that Saturday morning. Called to confirm my scheduled pickup time and when I got there they said they still needed 20 minutes to get the paperwork ready. I also found out that the original two hamsters came in and at least one volunteer knew they were male and female. Yet a volunteer took them both home in the same cage and they had babies. So the shelter is at fault for creating even more homeless animals… I love my hamsters Beefy and Pepperoni and I’m so glad to give them a good life and home but dealing with this shelter was truly a nightmare. The vet is not capable, the front desk is the most disorganized thing I’ve ever seen, and the lack of communication causes major issues for adopters. These issues will discourage people from rescuing good animals which is such a shame. I do want to note there are a couple of amazing volunteers I met there who love and prioritize the animals! Other than that I don’t have a lot of good to say.

This is a hard place to rate. I know that this is a physically tough, and emotionally trying job. People for various reasons, have to leave their pets behind, and the folks at the SPCA pick up the pieces. Having said that, I think this place is a wonderful and necessary asset to the CNY community. I highly respect each and every person who either works or volunteers there.

We lost our family kitty a few months ago and were searching for the perfect new addition. CNY SPCA were amazing every step of the way. The staff was not only friendly and helpful but the facilities were extremely clean and well managed. I’m so grateful we brought our little guy home with us!

There is a review above from a young lady named Lynch, I was there when this event occurred. She had been clearly told on the phone that we don’t contract with the city, and that she could not bring the dog to us. Her beef is a syracuse animal control, not with CNYSPCA, she should direct her anger to them because they’re not open on the weekends. We are completely full. And have nowhere to put a dogs that we are not contracted to take care of. It is not the fault of the CNYSPCA that there is nowhere for her to take that dog.

Jen Lynch I don't understand why you are blatantly LYING about the incident that happened on Saturday.you called were told by a volunteer we do not contract with the city of Syracuse and we could not take the dog. She suggested you call the non emergency police line for them to help you, yet you still brought the dog to us, you did not ask us to scan the dog, you did not offer to leave your information. When I TOLD YOU to bring the dog to B&R Bunkhouse as that is where the city dogs are housed you told me I was rude. Because you didn't like the SAME answer you already received over the phone.yes I told you I could show you rude because believe me I was not rude to you, when YOU CAME back in to start yelling and then you said Ok come on show me, I was behind a desk though about 15 feet from you so not sure how you felt threatened

I haven't had much luck here, we did adopt a cat once but the prices can be kinda high since they come w all there shots and work done. I called about a stray cat and she couldn't help me. So I can't say this is the best place for pets but in a pinch it's something better then nothing. Good luck use your best judgement

While out running, I found a dog running in and out of the streets. After looking locally for the owners, I contacted the non-emergency 911, reported the dog missing, and then transported the dog to the CNYSPCA at the suggestion of the Syracuse police department. Upon arrival I was confronted by a larger lady with curly hair up in a bun (I wish I had her name). She very rudely told me that she “already told me that she wouldn’t take the dog because they were not contracted by the city, ” and offered no other assistance. She would not take my name and number in case an owner called looking for the dog, nor would she check to see if it was microchipped. When I commented that she didn’t have to be so rude because I was just trying to do the right thing by this dog her response was, “if you want to see rude I will show you rude, ” and then stepped towards me in a very threatening manner. I’ve never felt so mistreated for trying to do the right thing. My question is, why is this person working in an establishment if she wasn’t willing to help the dog. I understand if they couldn’t take it in, but she could have assisted in other ways in order to find its owner. I sincerely hope that this issue is addressed with her as I will never again support this agency.

Volunteering walking dogs at The CNYSPCA has shown me first hand the true love and patience the staff and everyone at the shelter shows for all types of their animals. Everybody wants what's best for the dogs and everybody from the staff to volunteers are so friendly and welcoming. You really can see the passion for all the dogs, cats, and other animals at the CNYSPCA and the local community. I'd highly recommend anyone to volunteer or donate to this shelter if possible. A shelter is a scary place for a dog to be filled with anxiety and stress, but the staff and volunteers here do so much for the animals to make that process as easy a transition it can be for everybody involved.

The smell in the visiting area for cats was horrible. I doubt it's healthy for the cats or for visitors.

Visited only the cats up for adoption. They are as well taken care of as possible. The agency is open about any health issues the animals may have. Name, age, date surrendered and health problems are all posted on the cage of each animal. They have an open room where cats can roam freely with access to what is like a small, enclosed patio they can go out to. The ladies working the front desk were kind and helpful.

I called today to get help with resources of replacement for a severe situation and was given the typical run around and waste of time.
