Goodnow Mountain Trailhead reviews
12 This was a nice hike. We hiked it Friday as a warm up for the Tupper Lake Triad the following day. The trail was nicely marked. There is a piece of paper at the station that says the Fire Tower is closed, which isn't mentioned anywhere online that we saw, which is unfortunate. You can climb up but not access the cabin dur to damage. The mountain is said to have some very nice views however, we got caught in a storm. 10 of a mile from the top. As it died down we raced up and took shelter under the porch of the cabin with some large spiders. A window on the cabin was busted in, yet sweeped into a nice pile, and there isn't much debris outside the window.
In closing, the hike was simple. The trail seemed dog and child friendly. We nearly ran up the entire thing. There was a sign for a privy at the top as well. Definitely going back to get a netter view when it's not raining.
Beautiful easy hike with views of 23 of the Adirondack high peaks can be seen at the summit.
SUNY ESF maintains this beautiful trail. Parking lot is plowed regularly and off a paved road so it's no problem to get to. The trail itself is easy-to-moderate, flat at first but steeper toward the end. There are creek crossings, but also bridges. The views from the top are absolutely incredible since you are looking out on the high peaks. 360 degree views. There is a webcam of the conditions at the top run by the college, too. When I went, it was already snowshoe time. Beautiful place!
My wife and I enjoyed a beautiful day, perfect weather for hiking. The trail is moderately difficult, good mix of terrain. No views while on the trail, nor much at the peak. On top is a fire tower under renovation. You can only climb the stairs for now. But wow, the view is spectacular in every direction. Stunning beauty!
Great trail. Great view. The trail is steep and muddy in spots. The view from the tower is worth it. You can climb the tower. The top room is closed, so you can't climb all the way to the top.
Well maintained trail with an amazing view. Didnt get to go up the tower but the cabin and the history is pretty neat
Hiked this on June 18,2021 with my 19 year old son. I'm 51 and have some recent knee issues, so he moved a lot quicker than I did, but even in my banged up condition, I managed to reach the fire tower on the summit with few problems.
The trailhead is easy to find, right off 28 N. The parking lot was empty the day of our hike. There does appear to be ample spots for busier days. The sign in station is just feet from the parking lot. And then the trail begins. Here's my notes from the hike:
75 miles, starts to climb, gently.
. 95 miles, flattens out
Numerous walkways and bridges
Well maintained
Well marked, red ESF markers
Starts picking backing up again around 1.15 miles
Crosses small creek at 1.44 miles, immediately followed by a very negotiable, not slippery, bald
Another bald at 1.47 miles, larger
Flattens out at 1.50 miles, long walkway
Remains of building foundation at 1.55 miles
Starts climbing again, gently
Flattens at 1.64 miles
More building remains and long walkway at 1.68 miles
Start to gain mountain views at 1.73 miles
Somewhat steep at 1.77 miles, rocky
First real nice view of surrounding peaks at 1.89 miles
Starts descending at 1.91 miles
Starts climbing at 1.98 miles
Tower emerges in front of you at 2.06 miles
We measured the round trip distance as 4.12 miles. We completed it in 2 hours and 13 minutes. Our Map app stated we gained a little over 900 feet of elevation, got in 12,000 steps and burned over 600 calories, ha!
Seriously, this is a great hike, one that provides "bang for your buck". In other words, the summit provides spectacular 360 degree views (exceeding what is seen on many high peak summits in our opinion) without being very rigorous. Recommend for anyone in moderate to good shape. Good for families with younger children, families with furry friends. Good luck and bring water and the right gear!
My 8-year old daughter’s review:
I liked the trail because the trail had a steep rock we had to climb.
The trail is moderate one with 4.5 mile out and back. At the top there's a fire tower. And you can climb few stairs and get a 360 view of the area. Well worth the hike. We were camping at the Lake Harris campground and it was a 10 minute drive from there. I bet it would be gorgeous in the fall. I saw many kids made it to the top. So the kids can make it with a bit of effort. Good for a family hike since the distance is relatively small compared to the beautiful view at the top.
Beautiful views once you get to the fire Tower. 11/26/19 some ice and lots of mud made the climb almost 3 hrs, 2 coming down.
Great trail with amazing view. A bit strenuous at parts but old dudes and children were crushing it.
Excellent trail, very well maintained, very well graded, kudos to the trail builders and maintainers. Climb the fire tower at least halfway for excellent 360 views from the top.
