Bar Grand Army reviews
16Go only for the seafood- all other menu items are overpriced and mediocre. This was my first time back in about 5 years and I popped in with a friend for something light before our evening plans. We ordered the deviled eggs and crispy potatoes. What set up back $30 was 1.5 hard boiled eggs and 4 steak fries that came in a cup with watery creme fraiche.
Super fun spot with a nice lil fireplace in the winter. Bar staff had great suggestions and knowledge. I’ll be back.
It was great! It's great for Masters of Fine Arts students but their happy hour is a little limited. However Brad Parsons is the MVP, so we love this place.
I love Grand Army, came with a friend the first time and then brought friends here the second time. First time, I was impressed by my friend's taste in food, second time, my friends were impressed with MY taste in food.
Would definitely come here again - menu and themes seem to change every couple of months (every season?) And each time the variations don't seem to change the quality of the food. Cocktails are fantastic as well - purple parrots at the moment is quite good.
For the go around, we ordered 1 of every entree and all of it was delicious. I don't even remember the names of the dishes, just order whatever you want and you won't be disappointed
Es un lugar extremadamente caro para la calidad y variedad de comida. La cerveza cuesta 8 dólares y tiene menos de 250cm3 (una pinta tiene 500cm3). La tencion es incorrecta.

I've always liked this place, but a recent night there made me reëvaluate.
The cocktails used to be excellent. The last time I visited (Nov 2022), however, there was a marked drop in the conception and presentation of the cocktails. In face given the move in the drink menu from a natural/mystical/deer antler vibe to a 80s-90s television show nostalgia theme, I'm tempted to guess there was a turnover in the cocktail curation staff. My date and I tried two drinks and both were unbalanced, uninspired and generally lackluster. One may posit many explanations besides a star bartender departing or declining standards, but as having an excellent and interesting drink was the main reason I walked 20 min in the cold to get there, it was quite a disappointment. And frankly, at $18 a pop it's unforgivable.
The decor is still subtly psychedelic southwestern meets ironic early millennial, which is cool. The staff were still friendly. Whether happy hour oysters or other raw bar faves remain a good proposition remains to be seen, though given my last experience I am not encouraged.
Perhaps I shall try again if I'm in the neighborhood. I hope they tighten it up.
Both the drinks and the food are done well with care and attention. I have been several times and am never disappointed I came. Happy hour oysters are one of the treats I love to gift myself especially in the warmer seasons. But the warmth of the fireplace brings me in in the cold months.
We came late, so we did not eat, but the menu looked great and the cocktails were delicious, even though a little pricey. The service was excellent. Very friendly vibe.
Great 90’s vibes. Love the girl pop music. The decor is so dope and the plants all over the bar is a nice touch. The drinks are really good and yummy. They seem to change their menu often but my cocktail was delicious and refreshing. The food on the menu has a minimal selection. This place is on the pricer side. My only real complaint is that the music was literally so loud it was really hard to have a conversation with the music blasting.
Love the spice girl theme. Nostalgia at its finest.
This place had poor service. Took forever to get a drink and then I can to hunt down a waitress to pay my bill because after I got my first drink, the waiter never came back.
Fun. Good cocktails, non alcoholic options, and a varied list of scotches and whiskeys. Found it on the ace hotel website. Sit outside or inside and enjoy the people watching.
We had an amazing time! The seafood tower for only 60$ was SO worth it! Megan was an amazing server she walked us through all the options and paired cocktails with every step of our meals. Thank you for bringing water for my dog! Love this place and the patio is pet friendly
The only good thing about this place is the oysters which are over priced. The food itself comes in the tiniest servings that could fit in the palm of my hand. The tables were dirty. Do not recommend this place unless you want a variety of oysters downtown.
Wouldn't say I'm a spicegirl fan but the creativity was awesome! Food was amazing and unique! Very amazing alcohol and wine list also! I love how the themes change and I am looking forward to the next!
The cocktails and mussels are amazing! Cozy spot close to the office which I look forward to frequenting. A bit pricey, but high quality establishment.
I'm not sure about the negative post here. (Especially the one about the coffee - they don't serve coffee) I used to go to Grand Army back in the early days when they used to give you dropper bottles of handcrafted kinds of vinegar and such for the oysters and it was great. The bad reviews made me a little hesitant to take my guests here, but I try to read into reviews and see where their angle is and I felt that some were people with an ax to grind. I've revisited before covid and it was always spot on. My most recent visit, and first since covid, was last night.
I can say the staff was pleasant and knowledgeable as it has always been. Jessica was great, even taking the time to let me bore her with my stories of the "old days" eating at Grand Army.
The food - always good, is better than it had ever been. The flavor and texture combinations were perfect. The kitchen knows their way around food.
The menu changes, so I couldn't pull up the names of the dishes, but ill do it from memory and describe a few.
The High Brow seafood tower was very fresh and the oysters were super briny and perfect. The lobster was fire-grilled and topped with an amazing sauce of I can only guess passion fruit (?)
The "Bread and Butter" was a hunk of wonderful sourdough and smear of hummus-like spread that you wanted to lick off the dish.
I'm a deviled egg fanatic so it's not fair for me to judge, but I loved them topped with trout roe
Baguette toast topped with Japanese potato salad was carb and mayo heaven.
The smoked trout wasn't what we expected from the description, but we were f a r from disappointed. Smoky, crunchy, salty everything just fell together
What I can only describe as a Mussels Pozole - plump just barely cooked mussels (the way they should be) in a slightly piquant broth scented with cilantro with soft hominy and crunchy radish was to die for.
The Black (Sea?) Bass was perfect. Skin on made for a beautiful presentation nestled with grilled scallions, salsa verde, cotija polenta, and what I can only describe as crispy shallots (?) The dish was a textbook example of flavors and textures. Simply amazing.
I didn't taste the scallops, but my SIL said it was amazing. I'll take her word for it - she is very picky about her scallops.
Dessert did not let us down - an apple crisp with ginger and sage ice cream. I'm sure I detected flecks of cardamom (?) Brilliant
The Japanese cheesecake was an interesting combination of texture (rice flour made it dense and chewy not in a bad way) and flavor - amoro and fruits.
The handcrafted cocktails were fresh and tasty. All well balanced with flavors and alcohol. Not in your face strong - just perfect. Served in the appropriate glassware for the type of drink
The vibe is young (25 to 35ish) brooklyn hipster. If you prefer to hear Frank or Dean crooning in the background, this place is not for you. Its not a quiet place, its not meant to be.
Are the portions big? No.
Is it cheap? No.
Please don't go here to eat big and spend little. There's a thing called value and what that means is you get the quality (not quantity) for your money. We hit it pretty hard between drinks, courses, and dishes. It was a respectable $100 per person before tip and tax. It's reasonable for the quality of the food, the level of the cooking, and the portions. (1 bt wine, 6 cocktails, 5 apps, a tower, 4 mains, and 4 desserts) )
