First time here, my wife had hip surgery. When we went for pre admission testing we were told that two people were allowed to visit. We were also told the same thing by security when my son asked as we were leaving. When the staff called with the time of surgery and what time to arrive. When the person told my wife that only one person can accompany her. I had to tell my daughter who came up from Florida that she had to wait for visiting today February 23rd only my daughter can visit. I had to stay home. This place is we ridiculous you aren't allowed to eat while waiting, if you wanted to eat you had to leave the bldg. They have a coffee shop directly across from the waiting area on the fourth floor. This shop sells muffins, candy soda and coffee. I could only buy a drink, why buy anything else if I can't eat it. So after 11 hours of sitting and standing because I'm handicapped and can't sit or stand for long periods of time I had to wait until I knew that my wife was OK and that she would be staying in recovery overnight that I had a sandwich that was in my backpack on the way home. This while employees were purchasing muffins and other edibles. I worked in a Hospital for 38 years and other than covid have never seen anything like this. Wearing mask I totally understand, limiting visiting to one person I don't agree with. The CDC lifted the limitations that were in place. Two visitors at a time should be allowed, with those two visitors able to come down and switch with others who may be waiting. I strongly believe that it is the patients who keep Hospitals running along with government agencies. Those pts.families should be allowed to eat in the waiting area or a cafeteria. They are stressed waiting for the outcome of the surgery and Handicapped making it difficult to get around. Sorry for rambling. Plus if I didn't ask why no one came out to speak with me about my wife's surgery, one hour after she was in recovery. I probably wouldn't have spoke to the doctor. When after seeing several physicians come out to speak with other patients families. I totally believe that my wife's surgeon had a long day as did I, stressed waiting for someone to come and inform me of how things went with my wife. Stay safe and have a great day

I may have had the most disturbing conversation in all my years with a young staff member of the 'Patient Experience Department' (formerly termed the 'Patient Satisfaction' Dept). She knows who she is - our conversation took place on Jan. 30th at approximately 3: 30 PM. When I'd complained about a very crucial issue that I know can be remedied, her answer (with NO other explanation) was as follows: "No means 'NO'. That's the answer - NO! " She then hung up abruptly without appropriately terminating the conversation. Is this how patients should be spoken to by a supposed professional staff member in a hospital-based department in a specialized community hospital? I don't think so! Shame on her! She was snippy, nasty, and non-caring. I hope this review receives an appropriate response as this is way more than an issue related to service excellence! A good portion of the staff in the hospital require re-education and at the very least - sensitivity training! The hospital staff do not consistently show examples of what a 'High Reliability Organization' should demonstrate. Food-for-thought if anyone from their quality department is reading this review!

Unable to see this Doctor. HSS thinks poorly of patients, HSS HOSPITAL does not allow me to see Dr Leali who was highly recommended, preventing me from seeing him since they are going to select which doctor will see me, something ignorant because if I AS A HUMAN BEING feel comfortable with the doctor, and Dr Leali TAKES MY INSURANCE then who is HSS Hospital to prevent me from seeing him and give me a doctor like a lottery, not even in a third world country does this happen, where is the dignity of these FALSE HEROES

I was a patient of HSS for many years, from my early teens until my early 30’s. Dr. David Levine & Dr. Boachie-Adjei, now both retired, set the standards of what I expected from other physicians.

I injured myself, now have AVN. I will now need to undergo full hip replacements sometime in future.

I am so thankful and feel so lucky, that I will be receiving my care and future surgeries and physiatry at this most wonderful medical institution.

Thank you Dr. Mascarinas, Dr. Wang, Dr. Sama and the entire staff at the offices I visit and all the employees at HSS.

My mom's knee replacement surgery is tomorrow, so I'm hoping it goes well. But there has been much so far that is so incredibly disappointing (and I hope that's all it is). My mom is a type 1 diabetic and they have done so much wrong so far. It's unclear if anyone within a team speaks to each other, and if anyone is/will be managing her diabetes. No one to answer a question or her calls/texts. This has caused a lot of unnecessary anxiety about the surgery. As my mom says, she's seeing the cracks in the system. And there are too many. I know you say in your answer to reviews that you aim for better care, but your actions say otherwise. She went with HSS over NYU because she thought HSS would be better, and I'm regretting not trying to convince her otherwise.

HSS is very overrated. It probably had a competitive advantage several years ago, but they are so conceited that they make you sign a document, giving away all your personal medical privacy in one of the poorest written legal documents I've ever read. Worse, is that they give you this document a mere minutes before you're about to go in for surgery. Minutes. Thus, you can either cancel the surgery or sign away all your privacy. It is the most unctuous way of dealing with patients that I've every witnessed. Why don't you receive this document the moment you've confirmed you want to have surgery at HSS with your doctor? Because HSS knows it's probably in the wrong. Thus, you're basically forced to sign this at the tip of sword, if you want to have surgery there.

I've had orthopedic surgery at other hospitals where I didn't have to sign away my medical privacy and I had a better outcome. HSS may have the name brand, but not the service. Save your time, money and privacy and find another hospital.

Front desk staff member in HSS Rheumatology Center with the wrist brace on was incredibly rude and cranky. She drew attention to me in the waiting area which is against the HIPPA laws. I told her I felt it was incredibly disrepected by her behavior. She gave me a very nasty attitude. If I had 2 Cents on me I would give it to her so she could buy a new attitude. The Doctors were very nice and efficient. The secretary ruined my experience and I do not believe I would want to come back here again to deal with her while I am in pain.

An amazing place. If you must have orthopedic surgery, this is the best place in the US and possibly in the world. Everything is geared to make it easier for patients.
If you have a hip problem, Dr. Bryan Kelly is the top hip repair specialist in the country, possibly in the world. Put all your exams, X-rays and MRI together and send them or bring them to him ASAP. He'll look at them and call you if you are within his field of care.
He's kind, considered, and even being the top gun at the hospital, he's available to talk to his patients and answer all questions. And he knows all there is to know, and then more, since he does all kind of research, and finds the best way to do what needs done.

The Clinical staff was excellent! However, my experience in the surgical waiting room and PACU was literally the worst most traumatic medical experience I have ever had! My son had a serious operation and the support staff made my experience much harder than it had to be. Avoid the surgical waiting room and PACU, very unprofessional and mean.

Good level of care but it’s very overcrowded. They don’t let family members visit or come with patients to appointments. Plan ahead for traffic also. The entrance is usually crowded.

There is something serious wrong with HSS’s practice. I had pain in my lower back and my hamstrings and calf are very tight. A PT told me my hamstrings had second degree tears. After many treatments my condition didn’t improve so I went to HSS sports medicine to check up my hamstring. The doctor used ultrasound and said he didn’t see any tears in hamstrings. So I asked why my hamstring is still so tight. He said it could be it’s still healing …… it turns out my adductors are the problem. When I made appointment, I was asked which body part. I said I am not sure maybe it’s my hamstrings so HSS sports medicine doctor only looked at my hamstrings not thinking anything else. A patient goes to hospital like HSS bc conditions couldn’t improved with PT and seeks second opinion but apparently HSS doctor is not thinking or not capable of thinking. It sucks.

I hate giving 1 star but the lack of communication in this hospital was quite shocking.

It’s clear notes are not taken between nurses and doctors (for example I had to fight tooth and nail for my basic diabetes medicine; my surgery was openly forgotten about; I had to explain to each nurse why I couldn’t have a medication bc it causes heart problems in my family - they gave it to me any way; endocrinologist said they came to see me to help me get back on my insulin pump but they never did).

It made for a very traumatic experience which, as an appendectomy patient, certainly didn’t need to be.

Best Hospital ever! My mom had surgery here with Dr. Todd who is an amazing doctor, very caring, very trustworthy and very easy to talk to. He made me feel good about the whole process my mother was going through. After surgery, he follow up every single day and she has been perfect afterwards. Dr. Singleton is super friendly and did a great job at keeping her without pain. We really appreciate that. During her stay, every single one who treated her was amazing, very friendly, very caring, but the cherry on the to is Samuel (Sam). He took the time to make us feel like home. Thanks for everything. I couldn’t be more grateful.

My experience over the years with HSS has been uniformly terrible—from my first visit in 2018 through my last visit in 2021. I'm not a celebrity patient with an interesting problem. I'm someone with chronic pain in my arms, hands, and legs. If you don't have a discernible, cut-and-dried condition, I would not recommend HSS. The HSS doctors I've seen have been consistently dismissive, lacking in empathy, and barely cordial at best.

My name M. À. After I hesitated to have the surgery with other surgeons, I am happy that I decided to do it with Dr Andrew SAMA. He is highly skilled, absolutely phenomenal. No words can define/ express how great I am to you Dr Sama. June 27,2022 is the day I had a fusion of L3/L4 with decompression, work of a master, only 3 weeks and I feel Great. Thanks a million.

Sent here after I was hospitalized for a week where i tested positive for lyme and got better with antibiotics, and the two male docs were chill but they brought in a mean lady at the end of my appt to gaslight me and say all my positive 6 or 7 lyme tests could be false positives, and im def sick and they dont know what it is, but it can't be lyme and to follow up with other docs. Bye, ill stick with my normal docs where I'm heard and seen who actually wanna help and not be naysayers for the sake of being naysayers. ️ No need for that rude, cold lady at the end of my appt.

I want to single out the post-op surgery care group. All three of the NP’s were wonderful, but I must make special mention of Christine (christy) Mironenko. You rarely have the pleasure of interacting with such a personal, professional health individual. HSS is lucky to have her
