La Boite en Bois reviews
17Nice cozy restaurant. We liked their duck confit salad, their roasted duck entree, and their onion soup.
Very nice French restaurant not far from the Park. The escargot, while rich, was excellent, as was the French onion soup. I had the roasted chicken and yukon potatoes since I've been here before and remembered how good it was. Will be back again:)
Everything was absolutely delicious! A bit pricier than I normally choose but worth the splurge, especially for a special occasion. We started with the Homemade Crab Cake with Herb Mayo & Cucumber Salad appetizer (we were hungry so forgot to take a pic). Then I had the Pan-Seared Salmon with a Honey Mustard Crust & Couscous which is melt in your mouth good. My dining partner are every bite of their Seafood Crepes in a Mushroom Sauce & Couscous. We closed with coffee and two desserts: Crème Brûlée (oooh-so-creme-y!) and Profiteroles which were so good I had a spoon in each hand!
Would absolutely go again, and already looking for the occasion to do it!
I was in love with this place before. I didn't go there for a long time. And my last visit, the food wasn't as good as before, the price was almost doubled, and when I got the bill, they charged for the bread which is usually complimentary at most restaurants, and I didn't even ask for it.
Went there with my brother for his recital in the city. Food is okay, service.not so good.
Good french dishes and ambiance. Prompt service, cosy downstairs room, more space in outside sidewalk seating.
Very nice little restaurant. We met my parents for dinner. They were going to a concert at Lincoln Center and we live in Queens. Perfect place to meet. Didn't feel rushed and the food was very good. Nice place to eat.
Really liked this restaurant. It's very small but they didn't pile tables on top of each other to try to pack in the cash. It felt roomy even though it wasn't. I would have given it 5 stars but I thought the portions were small. I was hungry a couple of hours later. I would definitely return and hope it was just my menu choice.
We loved the decor… very charming. The pate was delicious, as well as the crab cakes. The onion soup was decent and the lobster bisque was everything you want in that type of bisque… the essence of lobster with a touch of decadence. The desserts were good, especially the creme brûlée and the chocolate mousse. However, the place was packed and a bit warm/humid/stuffy. The entrees were a bit of a disappointment. The seafood crepes were very fishy as in “not fresh seafood” kind of way and I returned it. I just could not stomach them. They did offer to make me another dish, but I declined. The branzino was better, but a bit too “briny” from too many capers. In the end a good experience that fell a little short in the end.
My wife and I had brunch. Our first visit. I am 63 and I had the best omelette of my life there. How can a mushroom omelette be that good? I would rather revel in the mystery of it than try to explain it. My wife had the brioche French toast and loved it. Lovely, intimate space. Good service. No rush, no hurry. We will be frequent flyers. Bon appetite!
Easy to schedule an appointment via online. Visited on Mother's day. Had a great time. Decent foods. Our waiter was great.
The food was good but extremely expensive. The dining area is small and cramped. You will also be sitting about 6 inches from your fellow diners. My server was nice, but there was a snooty French guy who completely ignored us when we were waiting at the desk.
Delicious French dishes served by experienced friendly staff. The sauces were very special and made for lots of dipping with the French bread, which was gone by the end of dinner. Will return there soon for sure.
It definitely reminded me of my trip to Paris. I would definitely return. Even though we did not have reservations they seated us anyway and service was a good pace.
This restaurant is a paradox.it has a broad menu and great deal of variety for dinner, appetizers and dessert, with friendly, if harried servers. However there are aspects of their service and charging practices for our group of four where we will not be returning.
Here are the problems:
1. Once we placed our order, they brought bread to the table automatically. They did NOT inform us that they were charging us $3 for this. Had we known that, we wouldn't have ordered it. This is an unacceptable practice. Don't bring it if it isn't free!
2. The indoor dining area is very small. There is almost no room for entering and exiting diners to pass at the same time. Any queue has to wait outside. In nicer weather, the restaurant has a nice outdoor dining shed which is worth exploring instead.
3. While service was friendly, it looked like they only had two servers and the manager/owner for ten indoor and ten outdoor tables. We clearly informed our server that we were on a 90-minute window for a Lincoln Center performance. We had to constantly remind the server to serve us otherwise we would have been late to performance. All other restaurants in that area are well prepared for pre-Lincoln Center performance diners.
4. FINALLY, while fine NYC dining establishments are notorious for not issuing separate checks, they accept splitting amounts onto each diner's credit card. We gave them three credit cards, and they refused, saying they only process two credit cards max. I have never encountered this at any other NYC fine dining establshment.
If the above issues are not a problem for you, go ahead and dine here. Food is served appropriately hot or cold and is very good, but the above service and charging practices are a major annoyance. We are not coming back prior to future concerts and operas.
So very sad to see the quality plummet. The prices have skyrocketed, the food is no longer the caliber it has held for so many years. The roast duck was fine, but the lamb stew and soup du jour both tasteless. I am hoping it was an off night, but will not be back due to the price increase. No longer on my list of favorites.
