Morris-Jumel Mansion reviews
17What a special historic house in the heart of Washington Heights, a great way to learn about the history of the area. Michael our tour guide was outstanding, a true joy to learn from. Highly recommend for a rich cultural experience in NYC!
A historic gem in Manhattan, which happens to be the oldest building still standing in all of New York City. Built circa 1760. George Washington stayed there after he lost the Battle of Brooklyn. Aaron Burr married the wealthy owner Eliza Jumel - she loathed him and the marriage only lasted four months. The house has some of the original furniture and replicas of the time period. $10 admission for a self guided tour. Meg is an informative historian and guide.
Lovely grounds and a nice escape into the past. The house, which is Manhattan's oldest surviving
building, has a vibrant history, and placards outside tell the story, but tours are also offered. There's a peaceful garden and a lawn all open to the public.
Such a cool place to visit and the staff were really friendly and enthusiastic. I will be visiting again.
Please visit in late Spring or early Summer when everything is in bloom. The experience is immensely better!
The grounds are amazing. Although there is a lot of lawn area, there are a few beds of lilacs and roses that are well taken care of. Also, the sunken garden is absolutely beautiful. I haven't been inside the house so I can't say what its like.
I grew up 1 block away from here, so much history is a simple home. As a new Yorker we take our history for granted, appreciate this little gem
Hidden historical gem in NYC. Everyone should visit! Lots of history here, and very well preserved (the people complaining that it’s not, this is a almost 350+ year old building!) the guides were extremely knowledgeable and went above and beyond in telling us about the history of the place.
It's beautiful part of our history right up here in Washington Heights! It's quiet park and beautiful, in the summers we have jazz concerts and free Yoga on the lawn! Feel free to bring you dog and enjoy the walk!
Oldest standing home in Manhattan. Interesting history. Definitely worth a visit. Also the small street of houses across the street.
Phenomenal space with a fascinating history! They also offer 'ghost tours' more themed around history. Had a wonderful time checking this place out and the staff was very knowledgeable.
It's a beautiful Mansion and well-kept place. It's one of the oldest standing houses and with a lot of history, still standing in Washington Heights! I love that they host special events like tea party's and many more.
Great looking venue with a small but interesting museum. They hold a variety of events inside and out through the year
Second visit to this wonderful historic house. Took the tour with docent Adriane (sp?) which was entertaining and informative. Aaron Burr, George Washington, patriots, loyalists: who could ask for more?
I visited the mansion to see the Charles Addams exhibit, but the house is much more than that, the house is a revolutionary war time capsule that Washington, Hamilton Burr and more all have a history with.
An amazing hidden NYC gem! I live in the neighborhood and stumbled upon this quiet little garden and mansion one evening while walking. It's currently under renovation, but I'm looking forward to attending an event or tour to check out the interior. The surrounding gardens are beautiful.
If you feel like going back in time for a couple of hours then this is the place for you. Morris-Jumel Mansion sits high atop Manhattan. The grounds have beautiful flowers and herbs. Plus there are strawberries and cherries that you can pick. Take only a few at a time. They are also have great events. Like wine tasting and plays.
