Mushin Mixed Martial Arts reviews
11I've been training Jiu Jitsu for about 4.5 years now, and I've been at Mushin for the last 2.5 years. I've been to 3 different gyms prior to joining, and my experience at Mushin has, without a doubt, been the best. Class sizes are smaller so you get more individualized attention, and the instructors actually care whether you get the move right. Everyone knows each others name, and helps each other get better. This place has one the best environments for learning Jiu Jitsu. Also, if you're into strength & conditioning, Mushin has those classes too which isn't too common for martial arts gyms.
Mushin is the speak easy of martial arts. I have been a student of Tony B for the last 8 years, he takes the time to figure out how you learn as an individual and teaches you accordingly, helping you shape a game that suits your attributes and personality. Teaching concepts rather than stock “moves” he enables you to be an independent problem solver. Being a peer to the best athletes in the world, he is ahead of the curve with the most recent developments in technique, teaching with enthusiasm and clarity. Thanks to Tony I am able to hold my own in any room you throw me in. I strongly recommend seeking him out to make your journey to success streamlined.
I joined Mushin a few months ago as a white belt. Everyone is friendly and helpful during the training sessions. Erik and Tony are excellent instructors. The gym is kept very clean. Overall, it is a great environment to learn in.

Boutique experience
A+. It's a great gym.
I’ve been a member for almost 10 years practicing BJJ. Every class is taught by an experienced black belt with a low student to teacher ratio. The gym is clean and the members keep safety as a high priority. Everyone is friendly and it’s a welcoming environment to train in. I strongly recommend Mushin.
I've been a member here for over 8 years. I've visited and trained at other gyms in NYC (and other cities) and Mushin is by far the cleanest BJJ gym I've ever seen. Classes are small so you get an amazing student to teacher ratio; each class is almost like a semi-private lesson. Learning progression is also boosted as every instructor is a very high level black belt. Mushin also offers fitness classes alongside the martial arts program. I've found this to be extremely beneficial so that I don't have to join another gym for my fitness needs. Another positive is how the tight knit the members are at Mushin while still being welcoming and friendly; there are no cliques and no one is trying to rip your head off while training. I highly recommend checking out Mushin if you are looking for a BJJ/Striking/Fitness gym. It's been the best community that I've ever been a part of and it's been a great "third place" away from my workplace and home life.
Highly recommend!
Excellent instruction, clean and functional training room, and a warm welcoming study body makes Mushin MMA my favorite place to train when in NYC.
I’ve been practicing grappling and martial arts my whole life and now a member of Mushin MMA for a little over 5 years and can honestly say it’s my sanctuary from my daily grind.
The instructors are high level black belts that articulate techniques, movements, as well as strategies for a complete learning experience. Everyone who trains here have zero egos and I’ve made many close friends at this gym. Solid environment for the hobbiest, competitor, or anywhere in the middle.
Mushin also offers excellent fitness programs.
I have been training fitness classes here since 2014 and rejoined full time when I moved back to city in 2021. This is the third bjj gym i have trained at by far the best explanations for principle driven learning with great training partners. My bjj has progressed faster here than anywhere else. The community has been nothing but excellent.
Both fitness and BJJ classes have always been top notch.
I’ve been a member since 2014. This gym is the best kept secret in the city. Jiu jitsu classes are small and instructors are all high level black belts and very attentive. I’ve always appreciated that safety and cleanliness is priority for the gym owner. The environment is fantastic. Everyone is very friendly and no one comes in with an ego. As one of the few female members I have alway been made to feel very welcome and comfortable and have always been treated as an equal.
They also have an excellent fitness program. Highly recommend.
Mushin Mixed Martial Arts, is one of the best kept secrets in NYC. This is a no nonsense gym with great instructors and a simple layout with everything you need to get a great workout in. The people who workout here have all been coming for years and that alone should give you an idea of how solid this place is. I highly recommend you check it out.
