National Lighthouse Museum reviews
16Small but interesting museum, staff very nice and polite. Bridged the waiting time for the next ferry extremely well! €7 entry for around 20-40 minutes museum depending on your interests.
A small but important museum. With lovingly crafted lighthouse models, explaining the enormous importance and function of the lighthouses for the nation, introducing lighthouse keepers (!), interesting exhibits and a friendly staff impressed me during my visit. A “must” for fans of the coast and seafaring, but highly recommended for laypeople (like me).
A small but lovingly designed museum. The staff is very friendly and helpful. If you are on Staten Island and are interested in lighthouses or want to learn something about them, you should not miss this museum.
Lovely little Museum - great host in George who looked after us. When it's in full swing with the bigger museum next year (2024) will be even better
Extremely unique and interesting museum - Bianca was super knowledgeable and passionate and its made me want to visit a lighthouse back in the UK as soon as possible
100% the thing to do after taking the Staten Island ferry rather than just heading straight back to Manhattan
An awesome addition to your trip to Staten Island. Very friendly and knowledgeable staff/volunteers. They sell very cool miniature light houses at a great price if you want a memorable gift or souvenir. Short walk from the ferry terminal.
I enjoyed seeing all the little replica lighthouses. I also enjoyed the 4-minute information video. The staff was very polite and helpful. They are supposed to move to a bigger location in about 3 years.
Everyone was so kind! Learned a lot - definitely recommend if you want a quick stop after the ferry!
Highly recommended for a quick stop in SI. Bob was extremely knowledgeable and nice and provided an amazing tour for us. Learned so many interesting facts about lighthouses’ history.
A fun and fascinating museum, the National Lighthouse Museum is only a short walk from the St. George Staten Island Ferry Terminal. The museum offers a brief but engrossing history of lighthouses in the US, as well as a collection of miniature lighthouses from around the world and through history. The dedicated staff is friendly and explained the layout of the museum. Even the restroom is on point with a lighthouse theme! As of May 2023, it's a smaller institution which makes it a fairly quick but enjoyable visit. The lovely views of the Verrazano Bridge and the narrows from the nearby park are an added bonus.
I love lighthouses! But this is not a lighthouse converted to a museum. Instead, it is the national lighthouse depot that assembled French-made lens into lamps, fog horns, toilet paper holders, and whatever lighthouses needed. They are still in hopes for the restoration of the foundry and other buildings. The 4 minute film is informative, and the miniatures of many lighthouses were fun for me because I have visited more than one. If you ride the free Staten Island Ferry, it is just a few blocks away, then hop back on the ferry to get back to the Battery Park area.
This is quite a small museum. Also, they say they are adding more space, but they've been saying that for 2 decades now. Also, they support "LGBTQ" people, which is disgusting.
I love lighthouses, so this museum was perfect for a cute little walk with history around Staten Island. The staff is extremely friendly and nice, I can’t get out with my hands empty so I bought some souvenirs, they have beautiful things. Even when it’s small, they make sure u have a great time!
OK so firstly this is a museum about the history of the area and lighthouses in general, they never said there was a lighthouse here. Its quite small currently but they have been recently patronaged by Princess Anne, the Princess Royal so hope to be funded for development. The person who checked us in, gave us a little initial guided tour before leaving us to explore the rest on our own. Yes its very small and the topic is very niche but we loved it, the chance to support a local historical spot and it's only $7!
Lovely museum. Unfortunately, we didn't have time to do the tour which was offered. Anyway, Charles did a great job introducing us into the world of lighthouses.
This is a neat little museum with lots of great exhibits packed in a small place. I didn’t realize how interesting lighthouses could be. I took the ferry over from Manhattan and was just wandering around and came across the museum. Bob gave me a great introduction and you can tell it’s a labor of love for him to continue to develop the museum into the next building over.
Do yourself a favor and take the free Staten Island ferry and pay this museum a visit.
