Ootoya Chelsea reviews
16I had a lovely lunch at Ootoya. The staff is very friendly and welcoming. The Mackerel and all side dishes are very yummy, very good value for the money. The restaurant is cool, quiet and lets you forget the noisy NY streets for a bit. With the bill you’ll a cup of green tea to finish your meal:)
Really good for lunch, easy last min reservations, and amazing homey food. This spot is more down to earth compared to fancy NY pasta but honestly such a vibe if you’re looking for a comforting homey Japanese meal. The combo’s here offer a great variety for a low price.
I LOVE OOTOYA. The best comfort Japaneses food at a reasonable price in a beautiful setting in NYC. Their lunch sets are my fav. I have not had a bad meal here and I've been for 10+ times. It's where I bring all my lunch dates!
Brilliant restaurant with authentic japanese cuisine and an aesthetic that draws you in.the service and food are very good, prices are affordable, i would like to return sometime as i had a good experience eating here.the food is well made and you get a feel for the culture its a nice place
6.5 or 6 chicken katsu curry (not on menu) pretty good but not as good as Abiko (lighter though). Kasan ni decent but got soggy. Sushi was good, order more next time. Karage not good, gyoza shrimp solid.
An absolute gem! Katsu Toji was the best katsu we have had since japan. All of the warm appetizers wowed. The gyoza were crispy but also so buttery and fluffy. Sushi was v good too.and Service was fantastic. We are so happy to have happened upon this restaurant
Sushi was mind blowing.
Nice and efficient staff.
Decor tasteful and welcoming.
A little pricey (but gratuity is included in the price) and good, simple clean flavors.
Food:
- Chicken thigh - $5.5 very moist tender meat in soy sauce. They use a special fork for the skewer. It came with black pepper on the side
Meal set:
- Salmon sushi roll - Thin slices of salmon on top of inside out roll. Inside has avocado and cucumber. Topped with mayo and salmon roe. - a very thick roll you'll need 2 or 3 bites to finish. The rice was very good and the salmon fresh.
- Egg custard - delicious mouth feel - very soft and fine with a bit of a lightly sour sauce on top
- Soba - cold style with dipping sauce on side
- Miso soup - with thin slices of radish and carrot, bits of meat, scallion, bonito - very nice
- Shima Hokke grilled fish - tasty and a good sized portion but you'll need to pick out bones while you eat this
- Butterfish grilled fish - tasty but a smaller portion
Apps:
- Tofu salad with bonito - a layered bowl of salad, a layer of tofu then topped with a lot of bonito flakes, and some dressing on the side. - not bad but I think I'll stick to the tofu with salt next time for appetizer
Service:
- Hot towel to start
- Hot tea to finish
- Service very good and friendly
If you do takeout, you can order directly on their site and get a disocunt. The packaging is done well.
Nothing to not like here. Clean, professional, dishes are consistently delicious. Nice and comfortable bar seating for solo eaters.
It can be tasted single or as a set. I can choose the rice, size, noodles, and dressing as I want. Both the fresh Kaisen Don and the warm Unagi Ju are delicious and the meal is clean. The tea served after a meal is soothing to the stomach. The staff is friendly and the store is quiet and comfortable.
Loved the interior. I reserved for a 12pm slot on Saturday and it was quite empty since it just opened at 11: 30am. Probably another 30 minutes and the restaurant was filled.
I had the tonkatsu set (my absolute favorite) and my partner ordered the Salmon tonyu nabe set. Both dishes were delightful, light crispy battered pork cutlets paired well with the Ootoya wafu vegetable dressing. I liked the salmon roe over my rice with a nice little umami burst in each bite. The salmon tonyu nabe was yummy with a flavorful broth.
The service was fantastic and also gave us edamame on the house since on of the dishes took a while to cook. Interior decor was pleasant would bring friends and family here for any special occasion.
I love this place! I went here for my birthday. Their staff, Tenzin, was so nice and disseminate the news celebrating my birthday with a dessert with a candle. It was so touching. This is my first time being celebrated in a restaurant, totally unexpected this time. I love it. Thank you, Tenzin. And thank Herman for serving us. Everything here, the food, the vibe, and the warmness, all made my day. I'll remember today for all of my life as one of my memorable special days.
We were hoping for a great experience but it was just mediocre. The hostess wasn't very friendly when we arrived, she looked almost annoyed. Our server also didn't seem overly excited to be on shift either. Our table wasn't stable and after a few tries from the staff, I stepped in and finally stabilized it myself. We were seated right beside the kitchen and everytime someone came in and out of the kitchen, I got smacked by the curtain. For dinner, we ordered:
Homemade Tofu 7/10 make sure you put soy sauce on it
Shishito Peppers 10/10
Pork Kimchee Nabe and upgraded it to the set which included a bowl of rice, preserved carrots and a miso soup 7/10
Kamo Jibuni Nabe (upgraded) as well 9/10
Since the nabe is already a soup dish, I wish more consideration would have been given to the upgrade and instead of giving customers another soup, maybe offer an app as a substitute.
Found this place accidentally while walking to the PATH one night. Stopped in for a beer and some food. Ice cold Asiago on tap, fantastic. Food was great. Ambiance is good too, lights at the bar bar could be a little bit dimmer. Food was really good.
Then tragedy struck. I forgot to review or save this as a favorite.
Found it again while wandering and decided to see if was as good as I remembered. Lucky me it was, and it was also restaurant week.
Went there for NY restaurant week. The dishes are much smaller and less appetizing than their nicely rendered email photos. It’s like McDonald’s burgers in ads vs in reality. Will not eat there again.
