Peridance Center reviews
9 I was visiting from out of town and wanted to take a couple of classes while I was in New York.
The staff were super friendly and helpful. I'll be looking forward to going back again in the future.
Such a positive and encouraging group of talented dancers! It’s always a pleasure dropping in:)
I signed up for a beginners class, and I was so lost I had to leave within the first 10 minutes. The class just started all of a sudden - no instructor introduced themselves or anything about the class, people just started moving. It took me a minute to identify who was even leading the class. Then the instructor would just clap and everyone seemed to automatically know what move to do next. As a person who has never taken a dance class before, I had no idea what was going on. Why didn't the instructor use their words to introduce themselves and describe each movement? Why was there no demonstration of each step? And how did everyone know the moves already? I intentionally signed up for a beginners class, *not* the open level class - consider yourself warned that your classmates are at least intermediate dancers. I'm sure this studio is great if you have a dance background, but I do not recommend for absolute beginners.
Perfect place to take a dance class from ballet to salsa and everything in between. Also, performances regularly. Children's program and a small cafe
Amazing dance teachers. This is a not a review about them. It's about the facility and admin staff that take a cut of the class payments. While in general I want to support dance spaces in the city, it's hard to recommend Peridance with their administrative staff/policies and little attention paid to ventilation or floor cleanliness. The facility itself is pretty run down with zero ventilation and awful air quality. It's easy to wonder if the dance floors are regularly cleaned and in some rooms if ever at all. The adult open dance classes are sometimes unprofessionally canceled at the very last minute (sometimes with less than an hour before class time), which is really frustrating. While there are always exceptions, I find the admin staff on the whole are uncaring and serving customers seems to be a burden. It doesn't help that Peridance has hostile customer policies that one needs to careful to navigate, and happens to be more expensive than other nearby options ($24 per class vs $19 per class at PMT dance). I support the dance scene, but Peridance can be a hard place to recommend at times.
I am disappointed with the poor service and lack of communication. I registered for Roland Alexander's basic ballet class, but it was cancelled twice without timely notification. Additionally, the credit I was promised for the cancelled classes expired before I could use it. The front desk guided me to reach out to their manager to solve my issue by giving me the email of Sarah. However, Sarah never respond the email!
I went to African dance class for beginners (first time for me). It was a terrible experience. The teacher was literally mean. Correcting my dancing in a mean way in the front of everyone, asking me to “wake up” and even asked me “do you speak English? ”. I will go elsewhere next time, where I don’t feel shamed for being a beginner.
Frankly, after attending classes here for years, I won't be returning. The beginning and intermediate classes are placed in the basement. These classes are crowded for the space and the room is poorly ventilated. There is no place to dance and the teachers are doing their best to organize the space.
If you look closely at most of the 5 star reviews, a lot of reviewers only have 1 or 2 reviews which seems fake. I had a horrible experience with a dance class here. The class room was small, unventilated, and overcrowded to the point where there was no room to dance. It smelled bad and the room itself was in bad condition. The front desk's staff seemed blase at best. I will not be returning.
