San Matteo reviews
14 I placed order and while waiting, they cancelled it 30min after the order was placed without any explanation. They didn’t pick up phone call either.
Nobody should order from place like this
LOVE this place. The meatballs, penne vodka, arrancini, pizza! Best place in UES for pizza. Pizza da Napoli! Tastes proper. The people making the food and serving are also Italian.
Came here for dinner on a cold day. I called specifically beforehand and asked if they would allow a small dog inside, and they said sure. Then I came and we were forced to sit outside after having come all the way. I did not appreciate being lied to.
I got the Capricciosa pizza and it was amazing! I’m not Italian but I’ve been to Italy and this definitely felt authentic.
Just two order spaghetti.
Waited 45 minutes?
Come on.
This is not a family meal.
Be a pro. Please.
UPDATE: It's a sad day when I have to update this review but it's here. The owner has retired to a Cafe he runs elsewhere and new management has taken over this place. He's a great guy but cut too many corners. They no longer user triple fermented sourdough, and the crust now doesn't have anywhere close to the air it used to have in the photos here. The crust taste is completely gone. It's still remarkably thin but just tasteless like every other Pizzeria, not as unique as it used to be. Cheese was also tasteless. Looks like too many corners have been cut, and the price went up so there's really no upside to this change. It seems that people have caught onto the changes because it was empty on a Sunday at 5pm. Was always full at that time. Oh well:/
OLD REVIEW: As usual, San Matteo remains to make the single best Neapolitan Pizza I have ever tasted in my entire life. Nowhere in North America gets even close to it. It's no wonder they import water from Naples to make their dough. The sourdough crust tastes just magical. The sauce is just perfectly balanced. The Buffala cheese isn't as heavy or curdy as others we've had. It's just a perfect pizza. I strongly recommend sticking to the Margherita so you can enjoy the taste of pizza without having toppings interfere with the taste. I'm going to Naples this spring and I seriously doubt we'll taste better pizza there. This pie is at a completely different level compared to any other 'Neapolitan' pizzeria in North America.
Better than in Napoli. Ciro, Marika, Imma, and the rest of the gang are the best. So lucky to have this place in the hood.
Beware- if you order online you’re not getting the pizza from here but from a separate takeaway kitchen down the street. Imo that’s false advertising and should be made clear upfront.
Updated review: Still our favorite pizza in the neighborhood but they have gone way overboard with their prices. We’ll stay away until that changes.
Previous review: Best Neapolitan Pizza I had so far in NYC. Eating there regularly.
Amazing calzone (ricotta salami) and informal Italian outdoor dining, very cozy the owner and service are very attentive and friendly, end with their own house brewed coffee (the Nutella dessert looked incredible too), perfect for an afternoon or warm evening.
This is a cozy little place but their food is way overpriced for nothing! Ordinary pizza ordinary food! I’ve had much better Italian food elsewhere. I will not go back it’s way too expensive for what they serve.
San Matteo in New York has the best pizza I ever had. Dough is just 10/10, my favorite is cetara but really for salt lovers. Between the 2 locations this is my favorite. Thanks Ciro, you did bring a piece of Italy here!
This is NOT a “New York style pizza”. And I’m sorry they call that thing pizza.
This restauralnt space is small, but the pizzas we had would be similar to those you would find in Italy. This was on a Monday night and the restaurant was busy and we had very good service. We tried their special cheesecake topped with blueberries which was the best I have had. It was light yet creamy like a combination between ricotta and regular cream cheese. It is their special mixture of ingredients but delicious. We enjoyed everything we ordered and the staff were very warm.
Delicious pizza and salads, very authentic Itaian experience, great service. Recommend the Italian sweetbread for dessert as well.
