Shawangunk Grasslands National Wildlife Refuge reviews
17Magical place and wildlife to observe specifically in the winter. Predatory owls on the hunt every dusk/sunset. An amazing experience. FREE but donations recommended. Great parking and handicap/wheelchair accessible with elevated viewing platforms that have just ramps for access so wheelchairs walking sticks and walkers are encouraged and welcomed. Great place for handicapped folks to experience some beautiful wildlife. I love this place and I love that it's so accessable for the handicapped. Well worth the time and effort to bring your loved ones. Almost Guaranteed to see the owls hunting at every sunset. Bring some cheap binocs or a camera with a decent zoom otherwise you may get lucky if your sit and be still so an owl will grace you with it's presence and a close up fly by. Hope to see ya there!?
A small gem of a place. Small parking lot and short trails at this beautiful grasslands where there are plenty of birds and smaller animals to see there.
A beautiful, easy walk. Just remember.there's not a lot of shade out there. I don't think I'd attempt it in the middle of a hot day.
Great grassland habitat for unique birds and other wildlife. Nice trail system around the fields with bench's and enclosed blinds. Also has a bathroom and observation platform.
I’ve visited this place twice. Was able to see short eared owl and Northern Harrier. And not to forget, Northern Cardinal a day after icy rain was my best sight of the bird ever!
Ample of parking space, but keep in mind, there is no restrooms at this place. If you’re visiting during winter, there is a town just 4 miles before you enter this locality.
Very well maintained wildlife refuge. I went for the first time this year to photograph the short-eared owls. Had some luck the first time, but then had some bad luck on the next visit. Wildlife photography is hit or miss.
Beautiful scenery great looking mountains. Was looking for owls but didn't see any this time but will try again!
I loved it. It was great sitting on the platform and watching various birds over the meadow. We also had a great view of the skydiving planes climbing into the sky and dropping parachutists. A very nice departure from the typical middle NYS parks.
Great place to watch birds - bring binoculars or a telephoto lens. Bobolinks mostly. Has a loop trail around it.
Very beautiful and peaceful place to walk and commune with nature. Tons of ticks, though-dress in long pants and check yourself before leaving!
It's a lovely place to watch birds and other wildlife. CLEAN 1 person composting toilet available (no sink, sanitizer available). No dogs allowed. Wish we stopped here sooner
Perfect for those that enjoy bird watching, bring your binoculars!
We unfortunately couldn’t walk too far, because the path was so icy. But I could tell it would be a nice walk in better weather. Large parking lot with a bathroom onsite.
Great place for Wildlife Photography and an easy flat walk for exercise. Highly Rec. My kids love walking there
Nice place to watch and photograph birds. Plenty of parking and a bathroom. Today I was photographing Short eared owls and harrier hawks.
The trails are closed, due to snow i believe, beyond the first bird blind. The photographers were all crowded up where the trail was open.
Normally this is my favorite place to go walking, but the last couple weeks haven't been too great.
Unique open country for this area. As a bird watcher, much opportunity. Most of trail well cared for but not clearly marked in spots. Easy walking. No bikes!
