The New York Basics

The good:
- The space is lovely, and the pastries are decent. - This cafe is always less crowded than the Hungarian Pastry Shop down the block.

The bad:
- There’s a shorter Hispanic lady on staff who’s pretty rude. She’s dismissive and won’t even look you in the eye.
- Like many of the other reviews suggest, customer service isn’t a forte at this cafe.

Ordered an iced coffee with almond milk and got a black coffee. When I asked if there was almond milk the woman who worked there rudely said “it’s there” and the coffee itself was really bitter and gross. I also ordered a shrimp salad and it tasted like it had been sitting out for a while - the lettuce was soggy and the shrimp tasted like it had gone bad. I’ve avoided this place ever since.

I love this coffee shop! It has fantastic coffee and the Cali omelette as a wrap is my favorite breakfast.

I used to love this place.that is until a huge bug came out of my salad. Used to have the salad once a week, and their almond croissants twice a week. I was so disgusted and disappointed. Even more unfortunately, I didn't find the bug until I had almost finished the salad. For that sole reason, the cook who made the salad accused me of either putting the bug in the salad or the bug having entered the salad after leaving the restaurant. Except, I didn't open the salad until I got to my apartment, and there is no way such a big bug flew in and died in the salad without me noticing. Cannot believe that the response of New York Basics was not an apology and admitting their mistake, and rather simply denying their fault, accusing me a loyal customer, and asking what I wanted them to do about it. I truly regret all of the money and time and loyalty I gave to this restaurant. I live literally one block away, and I will never go back. This is a disgusting restaurant with no basic knowledge of how to deal with mistakes. I wish I had seen the bug before I had eaten so much of the salad, then I wouldn't have had to throw everything up. I would feel less disgusted, and maybe then, the restaurant workers would have dealt with the situation properly.

Octavio/Bobby is one of the kindest people that I know! I was looking to order a lemon poppy muffin for my client and called the shop. He recalled that they hadn't had that flavor in quite a while. He offered to make one JUST FOR HER! It was an outstanding gesture. Not only did he whip up a batch as a test, but now the shop carries them regularly. I'm blown away by such kindness. Thank you so much.

So bad… ordered a matcha and it just tasted like milk with sugar, couldn’t even taste any matcha flavour. Also ordered a crepe which literally took 20 mins.

This is my second time at this location and both times I ordered to go. The first time, the order was wrong and realized after arriving at my apartment. The second time, I ordered an omelet and literally stood there waiting for 30 minutes for some eggs while it wasn't busy. Only reason for the two stars is the look of the place and the menu options. Nice place, just disappointed with the service and lack of attention to detail.

I've been here twice: once for an acai bowl and this time I got a flatbread.
The cashiers were friendly but the wait is too ridiculously long. The review below who said that she waited 30 min for a sandwich, I believe her because I waited at least 20 min for my flatbread. My flatbread was salty and the avocado on it was not exactly ripe. And although on the menu they said "prosciutto" what was inside the flatbread was definitely regular ham.
The acai bowl that I tried last time was really good though. I wonder if pick-up orders take less time.

I have come to this coffee shop many times while I was at Columbia, and one big reason was that it was so close to campus.one good amazing thing they make is a Greek yogurt with mix berries. I highly recommend it, One time I was there I guess they had ran out and to my surprise a gentleman came and said they were willing to make one right away. Hands down to the amazing service they have. Recently I have seeing their menu as they have added Acai Bowls so that will mean I will definitely be trying that also as I heard it's highly recommended by my friends.

Super kind and nice restaurant manager, who is genuinely caring for the health and service for the clients, and develops innovative menus and receipts that make our lives as graduate students easier, healthier, and happier. I highly recommend this store and will also definitely try their newly added Açaí bowl next time!

Food was delicious! Highly recommend the French Toast bagel. We also ordered the breakfast quesadilla, banana peanut butter crepe and iced coffee with oat milk - everything done incredibly well and exact to specifications! Food was right on time and packaged very well. Bonus that they paid attention to not adding utensils because I specifically asked to not have any. So good that I called the establishment and spoke with the manager Bobby and they were very courteous and he said he would relay the positive feedback to his staff, which is nice to know. Definitely ordering from here again.

I went there a few times because it’s so close to my office. There are always flies inside, and the flies get inside the area with the baked goods. The flies were literally on the baked goods. I pointed it out to one of the women that works there and she looked angry at me. The last time I went I waited 30 minutes for a sandwich, to then be given the wrong sandwich— which I didn’t discover until after I got home. Don’t waste your time or money going there. Just walk over one block to Broadway and you’ll find much better restaurants.

The service is fast and the staff is super friendly! It’s a great place to study and work with good indoor conversation/study atmosphere and an option for outdoor seating. The crepes are great.

I love all the baked goods displayed on the table.
Nutella latte is my treat.

Manager there suggested an ice latte with oat milk and caramel flavor and I have to say it's amazing. Amazing part of this is they don't charge you extra for oat milk like other places which I think is ridiculous for places to charge you for a drink and extra for another milk option.

It's my to go spot since I live nearby for breakfast lunch or just a place to study

Waited for 30 minutes for a sandwich. If I need that amount of time to get food, I can simply go to a restaurant rather than a coffee place. No apology or any explanation after all. The staffs were impolite and ignored me for several times.
The yogurt is very dry but the coffee is fine.
