The Ruins of Zog I, Muttontown Preserve, Muttontown, NY reviews
2The map provided is confusing because the actual trails are not marked to coordinate with the map at all. Everywhere you turn, there is a hiking trail so it's easy to walk in circles for quite some time and even jump from one trail to another without knowing. The area is easy to hike, with very little elevation, pretty, and serene - but not being able to find points of interest were time consuming and frustrating. We were unable to find the Walled Garden and the Ruins. Boy Scout Sites are not even on the map. Bring a compass! Why the 7 trails are not numbered and easily marked on each post for hikers is unacceptable, & made the day a very anxious experience.
This area of muttontown preserve is really cool. Not a ton to see tho. The whole preserve is really beautiful and great for day hiking. A mixture of wide trails, for the nearby horses, and more narrow trails, down to some over grown areas that require a little climbing (fallen trees) or crouching to get through. Varying elevation at times but nothing too challenging. Another note on the trails, they can be labyrinthine at times. A lot of loops and intersections. Would recommend bringing a compass as cell reception is spotty. That helped us get out when it was getting close to dark. Also, Because of the horses, your puppers aren't allowed anywhere in the muttontown preserve. But because of those horses, and the people that care for them, the trails are really well maintained.
