This has to be by far the worst animal shelter on Long Island! I would never recommend this animal shelter to anyone seeking to adopt a pet. The employees in the office are so rude! Specifically this one Caucasian woman at the front desk in that pathetic excuse for an office. It is apparent that she is miserable at her job and should seek employment elsewhere. How do you expect anyone to adopt animals if you’re denying applications because of your own personal stupid reasons. Literally, you don’t know what someone can be going through. You should be ashamed of yourself. Karma is like a boomerang. It’ll always come back to you! Trust and believe, this word will be spread amongst my fellow colleagues, friends, family and acquaintances. Keep up the great work

Can't find the words to explain how bad there service is. Spayed my puppy didnt even get enough medication or instructions on how to take care of her. Asked questions about some issues i ran accross during the healing process and didnt bother to reply. DON'T TAKE YOU PETS THERE your better off paying more and get the right treated for you pets

This place has flawed application and vetting process. They should really be ashamed of themselves as they are not doing what's best to place these poor animals in good homes. It is a shame because its obvoius thats why so many poor animals are doomed to live in cages for longer than needed or their whole lives. There are good families of animal lovers out there ready to adopt and provide good healthy homes for these pets. However these holier than thou people act like they are doing you a favor and deny your application for arbitrary and ridiculous reasons. There are no exceptions and the rules are non-sensical. There is no consideration of individual facts or situation. It's so ridiculous and frustrating. Our family could not be better pet owners. Our last cat lived till 15, our last dog lived till 14 and we payed over 11k for two ACL operations for her because we loved her so much and would have done anything for her. Our current dog is 18 years old! Our vet says we are great pet owners and he has ever seen people keep their pets in such good health for so long. Here is our experience with Smithtown animal shelter. Our family wanted to adopt two kittens. I filled out the application and they contacted my three references. All three references said the conversation was no more than 15 seconds. Then they called me to inform me that because my 18 year old Jack Russell wasn't spayed they were denying my application! I was told that they have a policy against allowing animals to be adopted to people with pets that are not spayed. They even had the nerve to tell me they considered me an unresponsible pet owner for not spaying my dog. My dog is 18! And an AKC registered championship pure bred Jack Russell. We did not spay her so she could have a litter. She had litter at age 4 and half years and we're told she was at an age at that point that there could be complications if we got her spayed. We decided we didn't want to take any risks so we left her un-spayed. We are so happy we had a litter and that we were able to keep one of her puppies who lived to 14 and recently passed due to brain tumor. I'm not sure these people understand how other puppies are created in this world. Not all animals can be made sterile or there would be no more animals! Also they obviously don't understand that pure bred champion dogs are rarely spayed because they produce such beautiful, wonderful, animals with few health problems and great temperaments. We are very disappointed and are left feeling that this experience happens far too often and leaves pets without the loving and nurturing homes they deserve.

Called just to ask if one of my strays were bought into there because I was worried about the poor thing. After they told me that the cat wasn't there, the rude woman on the phone started lecturing me about getting the mother of the cat fixed. And then talked to me like I was some child of hers who doesn't understand about trap and release. And practically scolded me because of the stray. When my town decides to give me FREE humane traps or sends someone to my neighborhood to help catch the strays along with FREE spay and neutering, then I can understand scolding someone like that but until then, just keep your opinion to yourself. I wanted to hang up the phone but im above that type of childish behavior.

Absolutely rude! Apparently when asked for her name, it’s “operator 146”. I as well work in the animal industry and was looking for a family pet because my son is now ready being that he is 4! Unfortunately for me having “operator 146” answer I was Rudely told they adoption center was closed and couldn’t even tell me about scheduling my appointment. Whoever this woman is, she should be notched down so she’s not losing amazing homes for these fur babies! All because she didn’t wanna do her job. Disgracefully

Clean, friendly and welcoming. Loved the Southampton spay trailer set up in the back. Employees very friendly and helpful. Lots of grassy dog runs for the doggies to play.

Very rude! Called to ask about Puppies. And literally got rushed off the phone and hung up on before I could ask any questions about anything else. Not a very good first impression. SMH.

Wanted to adopt 4 year old cat to a loving home. They took forever to get back to me first of all. When called they were saying how busy they were with the calls. I got everything ready for the cat to come home with me because they approved my application. Called again to set up a date to pick her up then they came up with a lame excuse not to give me the cat. They truly seem like they dont want their animals to be adopted. Horrible adoption experience! I dont even know why they bother calling themselves a shelter if animals live there for 5 years! They dont even bother trying to get them adopted. When you really try to adopt a cat from them it's impossible! I truly feel bad for all the animals that end up in there since people won't be able to adopt them even if they try.

I love the Smithtown Animal shelter because it's my happy place and I'm a senior volunteer there meaning that I've been volunteering there for over 20 years
