Russian Restaurant Varenichnaya reviews
12 We ordered some dishes, we liked everything except the dumplings, the meat was not tasty.
But other than that everything is very tasty! I recommend.
I took off the stars for the service, when we came in no one came to us, we had to look for someone to take the order, and they didn’t bring the cutlery, but they brought the food)
The atmosphere is certainly interesting, you should come and experience it yourself)
Cash payment!
The food was super delicious (borscht and Uzbek rice and compote to drink) and the service was great! Just make sure to bring cash!
If they say, they are out of borscht, just turn around and come back another time. Seems like all the good reviews are regarding the borscht. Service is very slow and I wouldn’t have minded if the food was great.
I wanted to try some of the food I miss from my home country. I ordered Varenyky with potatoes and mushrooms. Asked how many pieces were in a portion and was told 18. Which kind of surprised me because that would be a gigantic portion. Only then I understood that Varenyky were Russian style, thin and with little filling unlike the Ukrainian style, puffy and with lots of filling. All in all, they were good. Nothing special. I enjoyed Kompot though, as it was just slightly sweetened and tasted refreshing.
The service was a bit slow, and female restroom didn’t work, so there was only male restroom and it was quite dirty.
One thing that was the most disappointing was that they accept only cash. Not all people carry cash nowadays! It all turned in such a mess asking me to go and withdraw money from ATM in the next door store or use Zelle. What? ! If you guys care about your customers, please do a little more to avoid so much inconvenience. The little sign on the door is super hard to notice. At least you could tell your customers before they make an order that you accept only cash so that they know about it. Or print a QR code and give it along with the bill so that they could easily scan and transfer money. In any case, there is a way to make it easier and it should not be a customer’s problem.
The bill also includes 10% service fee.
Any business which does not keep the posted hours does not deserve to stay in business. I arrived at 5 PM on a Friday and they were closing.
The only good thing about it was that it's right at the foot of the subway stairs. Didn't like the food that much, service was a little slow, they have a difficult time understanding English, and they do not accept credit cards (nor do they warn you in advance about that or have an ATM).
Horrible place in general. Dirty, not comfortable, no service. The food is so so. Cannot recommend even borsch here
The building is very old, the kitchen and equipment are old.the taste is not very good.the worst thing is that it is only cash and the 10% fee is included, and then only taxes are included. Come in once and never come back.
In this restaurant, half of the dishes are not Russian, but since Russia has learned to appropriate and borrow from other countries their dishes, songs, culture and technologies.this is already a tradition for them. P.s And the photo of the menu does not show a Russian girl, but something mixed with a Ukrainian girl, because flower wreaths are a national headdress for Ukrainians, and for Russians is “Kokoshnik” a national headdress.
A disgusting place. Toilets are not cleaned with a terrible smell. They brought a plate in the shape of a fish. It has stubborn fat on it.it's terrible! I ordered a herring with potatoes, they brought one fourth of the herring and a few pieces of potatoes. Very displeased. Terrible place would not recommend.
Visiting NYC for a week and we had to come here twice because of how good the food was. Definitely make this a top priority for your list of places to visit.
Great food. Excellent service! Although we can't speak Uzbek the waiter greeted us with a warm smile!
