This place is a absolute joke. It is ran by a straight up drunk and she knows who she is. "She" also uses the place like her own personal play ground. I really hope that one day they get rid of the drunk old hag so this place can get back to the glory it deserves.

A great senior community with good-sized apartments, a wide range of activities, and very friendly fellow residents and staff. I’m glad we moved here.

If I could give 0 stars instead of 1, I would. I was a server at Breakwater for a year, and I would not recommend this facility for employees or residents alike. They don’t take good care of repairs, resulting in an elevator catching on fire and the balcony collapsed, as well as the generator stopped working for multiple hours when some of the residents need their oxygen. Some of the apartments have bedbugs and rodents. Management will purposely ignore you so that you get in more trouble if you have to call off or be late. The staff is very unprofessional and the management is a joke. They told me I wasn’t allowed to visit a resident I had become friends with that invited me over because I no longer work there, and that I couldn’t take her off the property either. Some of the worse-off residents have told me that certain staff is rude to them. You only get 3hrs every shift and “full time” is 20 hrs a week. The administration is childish and petty, and they allow their workers to pass off their duties on other employees, and pick favorites and give them less work than others. The cooks are very rude, one almost fought one of the servers and got no consequences, while the server was fired. They overcharge for every little thing of food as the residents are already paying thousands of dollars every month to live there. They hire people just to fire them 2 days later for things like hair color. Do not recommend.

I have lived at the Normandy Breakwater Senior Living for over 7 years. I was widowed and lived in my big house alone for 10 years. Coming here was the best decision I made for my future retirement. I’ve made close friends and feel as if this is truly “home”. I’m busy with our Library and Resident Gardens. There is always something going on if you are interested; music, games, performances & chatting with friends in the pub. We have a beautiful campus. I have a view of Lake Erie and our pond from my apartment. Staff feel like family. Come visit!

Worked here for a while as a server at the Breakwater facility. The majority of the residents were wonderful and I loved getting to know them. Unfortunately the fall off comes from management, and if you’re looking for employment I would NOT recommend it here. Very catty and cliquey. After repeatedly expressing my concerns about burnout due to taking on other coworkers duties and going above and beyond, as well as a lot of personal issues, I missed a scheduled shift due to a personal emergency. I had called off the day before and was ignored, so they told ME that I had quit via a 2-day no call no show, without asking if there was a reason for my absence or an “excuse” (i.e. Doctors note, funeral documentation, etc), then docked my final pay to minimum wage. I’m convinced this was purposeful, as in their handbook it states your pay can be docked for not giving two-weeks notice (which is ridiculous as it is, because they are at-will employment), but the consequences for a no call no show can extend up to termination. The handbook states nothing about a no-call no-show leading to your pay being docked, unless you have multiple in a row, in which case it can be considered you quit. The state’s guidelines say that “quiet quitting” is considered 3 days of not reporting to work with no contact, and the employer should reach out to the employee after each missed shift to see what’s going on to make an informed decision. After all, what if I was not in a state where I could not physically contact them? When I contested this, for obvious reasons, they banned me from the premises. Being banned from the premises sounds a lot more like being fired than quitting, doesn’t it? The work was not minimum wage work before you were mad at me, it’s not minimum wage work now that you are. As long as one worker is picking up the slack, other coworkers are allowed to shirk responsibilities with no consequences. When confronted about my tardiness, which I *was* in the wrong for, they addressed it in front of all of my coworkers and a new hire I was currently training, in what appeared to me to be an attempt to embarrass me, instead of calling me into an office to privately discuss it. On top of this, a receptionist reprimanded me for it in the same distasteful manner, when it is not her position to do so. After all this, after parting from the company for about a month or so, I was then messaged by my former supervisor and accused of returning to take a resident shopping, which I had not, and they claimed that as a former employee I am not allowed to “take her out” of the facility. It’s my understanding that these seniors are grown adults with rights, and what goes on outside of the facility when the resident willingly leaves is not dictated by the management of the building unless at a sponsored event, nor are they legally allowed to bar residents from reasonably accessing visitors without a health or safety concern (i.e. Leaving the premises to visit someone). Yes, you may ban me from the property, but no, you cannot forbid me from seeing a resident off-grounds just because they are still a resident. This just felt like a petty attempt at “punishment, ” because of previously mentioned discrepancies. Unfortunately for them, I know better, and it’s quite easy to look up the law. They take advantage of their employees not knowing their rights by doing things like this. The work load is easy, but the hours are generally terrible and the work atmosphere is not worth the trouble. Feel free to check Indeed’s Company Reviews under the same company name if you are unconvinced by my experience.

I have lived at the Breakwater Independent Living for 15 years and have loved my home. My spacious apartment, our extensive library, beautiful grounds, the parties as well as a variety of speakers and events make it a vibrant and thriving environment for all. There is always someone new to meet and activities to join when you want to socialize.

Don't wait, most people that I know say that they wish that they had moved in sooner

It is clear that the experience in the independent living area of Normandy is significantly different from our experience with a family member who was in the memory care area. The level of incompetence regarding the most routine of issues has been astonishing. Property disappearing and being told "it happens" is just not acceptable. The staff was unable to accommodate dietary restrictions on a consistent basis, causing significant weight loss and exacerbating other health issues. We have also waited nearly 3 weeks for medical records to be released, despite a State requirement that they be provided within 2 business days. We will be working with the County ombudsman to file a complaint and will also be exploring legal avenues that are available to us. In the meantime, I do not recommend this facility for memory care patients. The administration is inept and non-responsive at best. Your loved ones deserve better.

My mom lived at the breakwater apartment. The facility is one of the finest around. The common areas are clean and the staff is some of the kindest people I have ever met. The breakwater has many activities planned daily including entertainment. They have a great workout facility, library, movie theater and a pub, to name a few. The food is also amazing! Breakwater Apartments at the Normandy provides a great experience for Senior Independent Living. I highly recommend it and felt happy and safe with Mom enjoying her life there! Truly a blessing!

I have worked at Breakwater for over 12 years now, I love being able to interact with the residents during our activities and holiday events we plan! Breakwater is a clean and comfortable work environment. As a staff member, we are great with communicating with each other to be able to provide the best care for our residents.

Since my main position is in the dining room/kitchen, I would love to say our menu is absolutely amazing! Our chef's put all their hard work into making these homemade dishes & soups daily!

I’ve never lived in an apartment and did not know what to expect. I know l made the right choice coming to the Normandy Independent Living.
The apartment is beautiful with balcony facing West and the sunsets are gorgeous.
There are so many activities that I keep busy playing bridge, mah jong and other games. Entertainment is provided some evenings and field trips to such places as Restaurants and musical programs. One great trip coming up is to the Goodtime for lunch and tour.
The best part is the residents as everyone is so friendly and the Staff are always willing to be available whenever. After looking at many other facilities I’m so glad I made the move to the Normandy over a year ago.
Call and make appointment to visit. You won’t be sorry.

I have been a resident at the Normandy Breakwater Independent Apartments for 6 years. I could not be more pleased!
Let me highlight what has impressed me the most.
The spirit of the residents as a whole could not be matched. Always eager to lend a helping hand, give directions, or guide a shopping spree, they are a helpful & fun group.
The staff are always eager to please. Additionally, they are quick to respond in time of need and quick with a smile to help with suggestions.
If you have ever driven in, you will know how beautiful this 30+ acre campus is. Through the seasons the care given is phenomenal. And being surrounded by natural beauty continually lifts one’s spirits.
I need to relate that all administrative personnel are immediately accessible and responsive to the residents— a “first” in my experience. What a blessing.
Thank you to all at the Normandy.

I have lived at the Normandy for one year. Moving here is one of the best decisions I have made. The residents are great. Actually I am one of the younger ones, yet I am amazed at the abilities and interests of the residents.

The staff is definitely engaged with the community, providing many opportunities and resources for the residents to participate. Special meals are provided, especially for holidays. And a bonus for me is the underground parking garage.

If I could give zero stars, I would. Horrible administrative staff who are very poor at communicating, all of my mother's clothing went mysteriously "missing" during her stay and it was never found (hundreds of dollars worth of clothing), and they discharged her before she was physically capable and I had to get her out of bed and into a chair and wheel her out of there myself as they never showed up to help on discharge day.
