The Top Steak House reviews
19 Would give zero stars for atmosphere if possible. There is nothing high class feeling about dining in this crowded loud restaurant! They have shoved seating into every nook and cranny and it is now an atmosphere that might as well be a short north bar on a Friday night due to the noise and lack of elbow room. We were one booth away from the pianist and it was so loud we couldn’t even tell what songs he was singing from one to the next. It was so crowded a waitress tripped and spilled wine all over the back of some poor guy. No high end ambiance, no class. The food was good, sure, but at these prices and having to have reservations to get in, maybe there could be more of an exclusive high class dining experience offered? For me and others in my party with sensory issues it was a nightmare. Sorry to say, but they need to get rid of half the tables in the middle and set an expectation for a classy etiquette that matches the prices! Despite some delicious crème brûlée, it was a special occasion that was ruined by the crowdedness and I don’t see myself ever returning here.
Forgot to mention waitress had to be prompted to take our orders and never even took our drink orders we had to ask for drinks after she brought out salads.:/
Absolutely our favorite throwback place. We took friends who never visited before, and it was a hit. Excellent service, food, and the pear martini is the best.
Ate at the bar, first time here. It won't be the last. Raven and the rest of the bar staff were amazingly attentive to everyone there, including each other, which proved to create an efficient, charming, and warm atmosphere to go with the exquisite, perfectly prepared meal. If you want to be treated like family and fed like royalty, stop in. You won't regret it!
My wife and I went there for our Anniversary. We had wanted for years to dine here. I had the Prime rib and my wife had the Filet. They were both terrible. They took my wife steak and brought her another. It was no better.
We got the twice baked potato, very dry as if they were left over from the night before. The salad and the Shrimp cocktail were delicious.
Had a good waitress, Hannah.
Restroom too small and nasty with floor urinals, need remodeling, tables too close to each other like being in a sardine can, they put too much dressing on the salad
I have been to The Top about six times throughout the last three years and I have to say I was not at all impressed this time around. I wished the salad would’ve had a little more color and life to it. The Top Mac & Cheese was a hit in the past but tasted like hard noodles in a bland thin cheese sauce time around. The lobster tail that came with my surf & turf entree was overcooked and chewy. I asked for my steak to be cooked medium and it came out medium rare. I sent it back and it came out medium well. I overheard my waitress telling the couple next to me that a new Sous Chef was being trained in the kitchen. I’m not sure why management chose a busy Sunday evening to train a new chef lol
I noticed there is a new menu and prices have gone up about $15-$20 for most entrees. This is to be expected but for the price, I was hoping the experience would’ve been better.
Walk through the door and you’re instantly and genuinely transported back to the dining club scene of the 1950’s. This is not a reproduction of a 50’s dinner club, this is the real deal. This place has not changed at all in over 6 decades.
I had the Aged Ribeye, which was without a doubt, the best steak I’ve ever had in my life.
If you’re looking for a truly special dining experience, with amazing top quality food, this is the place. Don’t wait another minute. If I could give this place ten stars, this place would deserve it.
Loved the vibe and deco decor, baked potato skins were a little salty, I had Caesar salad with Salmon which had big shavings of Parmesan cheese, and good portions. It's a steak joint so my family each ordered the kind they liked with no complaints, they had two steak specials that would definitely appeal to those who want some gourmet style steak. The staff was attentive and kind but not as professional and experienced as other fine dining experiences.
I made a reservation at this restaurant over a month ago for my birthday dinner today 11/6. Get to the restaurant and was told they were waiting some people to get done. No problem I was still waiting on my other guest to arrive. We go back inside and the black lady tells me there was an issue with my reservation and it would be a few we could sit at the piano bar… Now I’ve never been inside this place so I have no clue to where I’m going no direction or anything. 3 other parties walked in with out issues greated and seated! I guess my issue was the color of my skin!
I was not going to let them ruin my special day with ugliness n rudeness!
We have been several times and typically love it, but we had our anniversary dinner here this week and it was not at all good. Our steak and potatoes were very cold. Our server was less than attentive. She was somewhat fine but not The Top quality we are used to. The manager kind of checked up on us by walking by and asking without stopping if things were good… so no chance to respond. We also asked for plain butter (house butter had added sugar) and the server acted like we were crazy and it took 10 minutes to get.
One positive was the bar staff and cocktails were amazing.
Went here yesterday for my birthday. Not very impressed. It's so incredibly dark your vision has to adjust. You're crammed like sardines in a already small seating area and our table was pretty small. Our waitress was very nice however it took forever between every single thing she did. The food I think was mediocre. Honestly i've had better From texas roadhouse. The oyster rockefeller was good, I had the salmon it was okay thankfully I did order a side of Sauce as it was a bit dry. My date had a steak and he was not impressed. I see reviews based on the atmosphere thinking that it looks cool. Honestly I felt a bit claustrophobic its all oddly designed, the front entrance seems like a danger zone its so dark, It honestly makes me think they're hiding decorating because you literally can't see anything. I don't know, I definitely won't go back. I think they're just the best restaurant in that area and that's how its gotten the reviews. It's not a good area at all.
Such a bummer for my birthday dinner.
The Top is the best place for a steak in Columbus. We've gone multiple times each year for decades and the service, food, and atmosphere are bar none.
I was very disappointed in my NY Strip steak. I could have gotten a better quality piece of meat from Meijer. It had a lot of gristle and not much flavor. My wife's filet was fine. I have been eating at the Top since moving to Columbus in 2000 although thesis the 1st since the pandemic. I never thought I would have to complain about a steak from a restaurant I love.
I should have given the meal an overall 2 stars, but it was my Birthday meal and I thought I'd be generous.
We used to regularly visit The Top when we lived Bexley. Talking some friends into visiting again years later, I've come to regret our decision. This place has lost several steps and it's no longer in the top 10 steakhouses in Columbus. For the food was adequate, service was horrendous and at times down right disrespectful.
The evening started fine and the food was okay. But nothing spectacular given the price. At the end of the meal we stayed for dessert and drinks. Again nothing to write home about. But our waitress informed us we stayed over their time limit and other customers were waiting for tables. So we moved to the bar.
There are other open tables mind you, but we moved. Over the next 45 minutes we spent at the bar, we noticed no one used our table and other tables remained empty. No one was waiting.
Upon leaving and picking up our coats, the lady at the door made a snide comment about my friend's jacket brand. Not posh enough for her I guess? I sincerely hope it wasn't because he's Jewish.
Perhaps the top is under new management sometime in the last several years. Or good help is sincerely hard to find. But to be a top restaurant Columbus you need spectacular food AND service. You won't find either now at The Top.
Everything was great until we paid the check. Some guest left some stayed to exchange conversation. We assumed they were closing they turned the lights off for 30 seconds, then back on. The waitress boxed my food up with the lady next to us and proceeded as though it was no problem. 3-4 people also complained to us about food being mixed in with others food. No one took anything that was left over do to mixing. Very uneasy feeling after spending a substantial amount of money to still be treated unfair. No we will not be attending or hosting any other functions there. Will take business back to Jeff Rubi's. As for the atmosphere needs some updates.
The Manager worked with me to get a party of 18 in. It just wasn't set up to accommodate that many people. The restaurant needs to updated and remodel. Not worth the money. Steak was just ok. Ran out of selections on the menu, did not have what they said they had for sides. Not worth what they are asking for price wise. I went to Eddie Merlot 2 weeks before, and it was worth the money. It was more but not by alot. Night and day on dining experience. Everything there is on a whole different level. Service to Food, and Ambience. It may have been good back in the day, it's time for change. Update the whole restaurant and experience. Of course still 200.00 in gratuity charged for total price. Also only 1 bill. Not realistic or reasonable in this day and time. Not really impressed. This was the Second time I have dined there. You can believe there will not be a Third Time. Moving on.
Reservations was at 9 we had several parties go in front of us unfortunately with the same time reservation. Didn’t get seated until 9: 40. Food didn’t get to use until 10: 30. Probably wouldn’t re visit again.
Good steak not great my wife ordered a medium steak and I ordered a medium well steak and hers came out more cooked than mine prices are high you're better off to go to Texas Roadhouse or Longhorn
For years I have enjoyed time here at least once a week. Alone to enjoy a meal, at times to meet friends and other occasions to conduct/discuss business. Generally the service is stellar, this also includes the food and cocktails however, my experience last night was not a good experience at all. I ordered the lamb chops and requested that they were prepared medium rare. I’ve ordered them in the past and honestly I was prepared for them to come over cooked but seasoned well and they did. As I began to eat the chef came to get water and asked how they were. My colleague let him know that I asked for medium rare. He immediately determined that they were over cooked and offered to make them over. I insisted that it wasn’t necessary because I really enjoyed the flavor however, he would have it no other way and said he would return in 3 minutes with the lamb I requested. He returned with a lamb on a bed of spinach with gravy. It was not what I wanted. The manager came over and spoke to me and began to argue about the preparation of the lamb chops. After rolling his eyes and neck at me as he attempted to verbally embarrass me asked to speak to the chef. When the chef came out he then began to argue with me about the temperature of the lamb as the manager stood next to me bouncing and tapping his foot in satisfaction as he witnessed our exchange. This restaurant has always been known for being a 5 star restaurant but has taken a decline in service as of lately. After my colleague finished their meal I went to the restroom where I saw the manager giggling with a bartender about how he “checked” me. It is dark inside so it was difficult to see that the individual you are talking about is standing in front of you. Sad to see that the new owners/management is allowing the restaurants service to decline.
