Replaced my timing belt a couple months ago and it has held up great! They seemed to thoroughly test their work, so I was more confident with the repair! The pricing was reasonable, it was easy to schedule and appointment, and the service was quicker than I expected!

I just got my transmission and my engine swap out and replaced by a newer used one with lower miles, Sean and Ben (father and son) owners of the shop, have been professional, kind, courteous to me, they are very knowledgeable of all the services needed to my vehicle, I highly recommend them, they will get the job done right, and on time.

Honest and affordable. High quality workmanship on everything he does. My wife and I sold our mazda 6 to him and he gave us a great price on it as well.

I've been going to Ben's since around 2005. They have become really good friends and trusted partners for me. Their level of professionalism and integrity is something that I wish more people had in this world. They never upsell you like the dealerships do and only recommend fixing what is truly needed to be fixed. Thank you, Ben, Sean and the crew!

Ben and team delivered excellent service to us for last 20 plus years. All our cars lasted for long time and are still on the road.

My Mazda suddenly stopped the other day after pulling onto a busy street. I had it towed here because it was close by and I’ve seen them there for over 15 years. Let me tell you, they had her fixed and back to me the next day after I feared the worst (new transmission needed). Sean called me at 8: 30am and explained the code and how they were going to fix it. Was called back at 2: 30pm and told she was done. Ben and Sean did a great job quickly and cost effectively. Do not hesitate to bring your car here!

I called a week ahead to schedule a appoint for my car reading all the reviews made me want to take my car there I called a day before as well to check in on my appointment and Ben (the owner) confirms again saying to bring my car in and when I got there he seemed to be in surprise that i brought my car in and I told him my name and what my car needed to be fixed and he told me that my schedule was suppose to be last week and that he had no space for me even though we talk the day prior about my appointment which seemed very weird overall wasn’t a good experience and probably won’t be going back

This review is long overdue. There are so many times when Ben has gone above and beyond on my little Subaru. When I leave his shop, it's not just that my car is repaired, it's that my faith in humanity is also restored. I first came to Ben around 2016. After doing many hours of research around town, getting quotes on years worth of (horrible) work I had done at TNA Auto Repair on MLK Blvd, I realized that I could have saved thousands of dollars in a five year period if I had gone to Ben's Japanese Auto. Ben's commitment to integrity is a rarity in Portland as far as car mechanics go, which most love to screw people who don't know a lick about cars (like me). This is not the case with Ben. He is a local hero.

We've been going to Ben and now his son Sean for years. Very thorough, very skilled with all Japanese models. Really thorough and not too expensive. No bad experiences.

They did great work on my car, and they found some issues with my car that other mechanics failed to find. Owner is friendly and knowledgeable. Great shop!

They were able to work me into their schedule and found the issue which a different mechanic shop couldn't find. Excellent communication, great customer service and I found the pricing fair. I'm new to the area and am happy to have found a good mechanic.

Wow I was so grateful for Ben. I am from the coast and had to pickup family at Pdx. After going to target my car sounding very bad. I was worried my car would not be able to make it back home. I found his shop online and prayed he had a key drop as I had to rent a car and find someone who could fix my car. Ben answers the phone after hours and came to my rescue picking up my keys and locked up my car. Turned out my catalytic converter was cut out. Ben took care of me and worked with my insurance. I can not explain how thankful I am for his work and kindness. Knowledgeable, fast quality work.

I have been bringing my 99 4Runner here since 2016. They are always very honest and thorough when repairs are needed. I highly recommend them.

9/2017 - Still driving the Camry with engine Ben put in. Still glad I did it. If you have a japanese car that needs an engine, I recommend Ben. Now I have another Toyota and I'm going to have Ben replace the transmission for me.

4/12/2013 - Update. I've been driving my Camry with new (used) engine that Ben put in a bit over a year ago. No problems. So happy I had him do it. The cost was $2800, included other stuff besides just the engine (new sparks, etc, new fluids). Car runs great. Was so much better than having to buy a new or another used car. Highly recommended.

2012- Ben and his crew saved my 1999 Camry from the junk yard. I let the engine run out of oil. After that, it sounded like a diesel and ate over a gallon of oil per 1000 miles. I talked to a bunch of different mechanics. Some said: "it's a gonner, not worth fixing. " Others wanted to rebuild the engine for over $4000 (and refusing the commit to a firm price). I found Ben while searching the web. He did a leak down test to identify the actual nature of the problem and described the result to me in a way that exactly matched my suspicion (worn EVERYTHING.valves, seals, rings, etc). He recommended to replace the engine with a low milage japanese used engine. He quoted me $2800 complete (parts and labor). That includes not only the engine, but quite a few new smaller parts AND replacing most fluids (which you would have to because you drain them when you take out the engine). In addition, he suggested that my clutch only had 10% life left (after 150k miles, this is not only reasonable but a good run for a clutch). He replaced the clutch at the same time as the engine, only for the price of parts. In the end, he did the work even faster than he initially estimated (does take a few days), came in exactly at the cost he told me, and charged me a very reasonable price for clutch parts. And now my car runs like new! After having had cars for 25 years and seen many different mechanics, some good but most only barely acceptable, I can highly recommend Ben. He was honest about the problem, did good work, charged a very reasonable/affordable amount, and did the work on time. I only gave "good" for appeal because the shop is quite "classic", not slick and shiny. Who cares?

6/2021 sold the Camry a year ago. Still was running great. Have regretted selling it ever since.

Parking is tight, this is a small shop very easy miss if your not careful. It's an old style machinic shop, nothing fancy but the team there was very nice. I found them online and after checking out their website decided to give them a call. I definitely think I was lucky to find this shop. I don't know much about cars and found it hard to describe what I ne fed done. But Sean (I think that was his name) was patient and took time to help me talk trough it. He suggested a same day appointment. I came in he went over what I needed provided a fair price and was upfront about what parts of need, how much they'd cost and where he'd get them. He took time to outline the process and I made a follow up appointment for the repairs. On the day of my next appointment I dropped my car off at 8am expecting to get it back in the afternoon but I had a call before 10 telling me my car was done! When I'd left they had 3 cars they were working on and they got all done super fast. They take visa, MasterCard, discover and amex gpay and apple pay at time of my appointment. Everyone there was masked and they had sanitizer out. I'm definitely going back. THANKS BEN'S JAPANESE AUTO CLINIC FOR MAKING EVERYTHING SO SIMPLE.

I work in the automotive industry and take my personal vehicles to Ben's and refer quite a few of my customers to them as well. They are always quick and have done simple things like recharging my AC to replacing the transmission on one of our older vehicles. They prices are very fair and they know these cars inside and out.
