Bertie Lou's Cafe reviews
18Had a great time at this little local diner. The menu was extensive and funny, and the service was friendly and quick. Outdoor seating filled up quickly, but we were able to eat inside and enjoy framed napkin art. Great eggs Benedict, I got the Larry. My coffee cup was always full because of the attentive server
Love this spot for breakfast- unassuming and unpretentious, but great food and friendly staff. Prices are reasonable and the location is great. It’s very small and feels like a hometown diner.
When you go there as POC, they will serve you a racist comment. "What can I get you guys? " "Chimichanga? " They don't have Chimichanga in the menu by the way. My latinx friend and I were very bummed lol
Great place with fresh food. I recommend the "Rob Special". It's the breakfast burrito with house potatoes in it and country gravy over it. Not on the menu, but I'm working on it.
Imagine this; it’s your first time visiting Portland, you wanna experience the best things the city has to offer. For me, personally, I always search for the best food joints because that’s how I like to experience a new city.
Now imagine, it’s Sunday morning, the hottest day of the year, you’re getting ready for a 6-hour drive back home and all you can think about is getting some breakfast to keep you fuelled through the trip. Took an extra 20 minutes, 15 minutes if I’d taken the right exit the first time, out of our way to this small cafe on the edge of Southeast Portland and was it worth it!
I’m no gravy expert, but the gravy and biscuit at this joint is fantastic. I had “The Works” which included all your breakfast essentials; sausages, eggs, home fries, and of course the biscuits and gravy. The atmosphere was welcoming and lively, and the service from everyone was friendly. The wait for our food? It was brought to our table by the chef and I would barely consider it a “wait”.
Overall impression; Fast, Friendly; Freaking Delicious. Worth the detour, and worth driving back 6-hours for. 5.1 s
The staff are fun, funny and friendly. Great food and selection. Specials are delicious. I've had 2 scrambles at different times and the are so so good.
Update: Dear Lord Almighty that brownie is GOOD.
Fun staff. Favorite breakfast burrito in the SE. The Bookman is fantastic too. Go on the weekdays to avoid longer waits.
I can't leave a better review! I am a huge fan of this café and am so grateful it is in walking distance to our home.
Breakfast is amazing every time no matter what I order! The menu is hilarious and the staff are always so pleasant regardless of how busy they are. I have not yet had the chance to dine in but take out quality is fantastic and never takes more then 10 minutes from phone order to being ready to pickup.
Today the server at checkout persuaded me towards a $3 brownie and it was heaven on earth! Keep up the good work Bertie Lou's staff.
Staff was very nice. Food was great, besides the sausages on one of the bennies being a little overcooked. Would return for sure!
Do not be fooled by the casual decor and the owner’s impish humor. This place is dead serious. Everything I have eaten here has been incredibly delicious. Do not miss the chicken fried pork chop, it… is… amazing.
Incredibly rude and pushy male waiter a few weeks back- was stoked to have a breakfast cafe nearby my home but not into the “rude, pushy” vibe we received. Very forcefully suggested I change my order and I was extremely displeased with the result… realized he was pushing it on all the tables around us, it’s the most expensive menu item. I found that really lame and I won’t return due to this style of service. Not even a full restaurant at the time- accept what a patron tells you they would like and don’t push something because you think your tip will be larger due to the bottom line.
Come early and come hungry! Limited indoor seating and you need proof of vaccination. I got the cinnamon roll French toast because I’m incorrigible when it comes to sugar. Boyfriend got The Sellwood. Would definitely come back. Classic breakfast stop.
Their food is so tasty! The gravy is super good, the omelets are spectacular, and it's at an affordable price! I highly recommend them!
As a huge fan of breakfast I’ve made a point to seek out and eat at lots of spots in this city, especially any of them that have chicken fried steak… and so far this is hands down the best I’ve had. Their gravy is also the best I’ve had in Portland. That along with fast and friendly service earned this place 5 stars, easily. So glad that Bertie Lou’s has survived thru the pandemic! You guys rock!
Food was absolutely amazing!
People were super friendly!
Got the wavos Rancheros special and it must have weighed 5# and every bit of it was delicious.
My wife had a scramble said it was one of the best she's had.
The place is tiny and we had to get food to go because of the covid restrictions, not a fault just a heads up.
Eat here and I would say it's worth a day trip drive just for them.
My absolute favorite brunch spot in Sellwood. Everything on the menu is good, just make sure to get something that includes their incredible gravy!
Happy birthday meal! Total winner. We all had Benedict’s and they were fantastic. The gravy was super and we loved the waitress and the funny menu.
Good food, nice location, & hilarious menu. Shaded seating is available outside. Delicious everything, no complaints from this Californian.
