Lloyd Athletic Club reviews
15 I came into visit to see if it would be a good fit for what I needed.
This staff is unreasonably kind and hospitable. They followed up without being clingy, they gave me a full tour and let me use the facility — which is absolutely dope and non creepy and not corporate, so cozy and cool. Ultimately, I wasn’t able to join because I needed some child care amenities, but they gave me a free visit to come back when I was ready, no strings attached.
So refreshing to not go to a gym that feels like a ponzu scheme. I can’t wait to join as a family when the kid gets older.
I’ve been a regular at LAC for 7 months and, typically being hard to impress, am in fact impressed with the facility, equipment, and staff (with an extra shoutout re Billy and Sophia). There have been several improvements lately and ongoing maintenance is always apparent. Do yourself a favor and join.
LAC is a great racquetball and handball club with a no-nonsense workout area, all the equipment you will ever need, and showers, sauna, steam room, and hot tub in each (men's and women's) locker room. In short, it is great place to get and stay fit. But LAC is more than a great club. From Nick, the owner, to the entire staff and the other members, LAC is a warm and welcoming community. It is also the most diverse and inclusive place I have found anywhere in Portland, by age, race, ethnicity, and lifestyle. A great place to meet interesting people and spend a couple of hours three times a week. I couldn't recommend it more.
Visiting for a couple weeks and happy to have found this gym. Abundant equipment and space for weightlifting, cardio, squash, crossfit, etc. Clean. Friendly staff. Would join if I lived here.
This spot is awesome. Just joined a couple weeks ago and have been loving it so far! Lots of space, great courts for racquetball, super friendly/helpful staff - literally no complaints and would highly recommend!
Welcoming, friendly staff. Quaint, classic vibe. Dedicated spaces for cardio equipment, free weights, lifting machines, power lifting, crossfit style (with Rogue equipment!). Post-workout beers in the lobby lounge. What more do you need!?
Best of all: ping pong! And not on some chintzy table.we're talkin' competition quality!
This place is great!
Weird and predatory third party management.
The facility itself is fine and the staff that work there are nice enough. However, it’s only after some time that I found out they don’t really manage memberships at all, it’s outsourced to a company called ABC Fitness.
I had a payment error one of my first months there and was charged a $40 late fee. I spoke to the on-site manager about this, and they said they have no power to waive the late fee, and I need to contact ABC Fitness. It’s worth mentioning that there was neither any mention of the late fee or the third-party management when I enrolled.
I have since moved away from the club and have been working to cancel my membership. I was told when I signed up that if I moved more than 5 miles away from the gym I could cancel. I was put in touch again with ABC Fitness to cancel, and when I reached out I was told I had to provide them with really personal information to prove the move occurred, like bank statements, mortgage documents, or a statement from my employer on letterhead. I was also informed that it would take 30 days to process the cancellation, during which time I would still be charged, and that if I lived within 5 miles of any other ABC Fitness affiliated gyms that I cannot cancel my membership (they claim to manage 40% of all “independent” gyms in America). Again, these are things that I was not informed about when I signed up.
I wanted to support this gym because I thought it was a local business, but was mislead by them about many things when I signed my one year contract. I do not recommend them, and would encourage everyone to ask your local gym if they’re managed by ABC Fitness before committing to any membership plan.
Nicholas Davidson helped me out with a refund and cancellation when some things came up that prevented me from going to the gym. Thank you much Nick. If you're in Portland recommend you come by and check out the facility.
Loved this gym throughout my whole membership! Only reason I stopped going was because I moved. Staff was also very helpful and friendly. Even helped me cancel my membership earlier to save money when it technically wasn't allowed by their membership software. Couldn't recommend enough.
I've been a member of the LAC for 8 years and while it has seen some changes over those years, it has always had what no other gym has: *soul*.
I've referred countless friends and colleagues to this place, five of whom are members to this day. Those who know me well know that–admittedly corny to say–LAC is a second home, nor am I a shill for any business that offers me a promo. To me and to many of its members, LAC is an institution with a welcoming and unpretentious community, one which has been, at various difficult times in my life, a place of refuge and wellness where I was sure to be greeted by familiar faces. This was literally true when facing physical abuse at home; the LAC allowed me the benefit of friendly interaction with members and staff. During the height of COVID, I elected to pay membership dues merely to ensure that the LAC was not among its casualties. I moved back into this neighborhood largely to be close to my gym. A former trainer encouraged me to pursue hip-hop dance which I still engage with 8 years later. And as recently as this past fall, in the face of devastating family loss, I'm grateful to have had the privilege to choose my own physical health and wellness and resume regular exercise. If for no other reason than to be in a familiar environment that has been a fixture for the last 8 years, the LAC has been pivotal not only for my physical health, but mental and emotional well-being also. While I can't ensure to anyone who reads this review that they will have the same experience I've been fortunate enough to have, I am perfectly confident in assuring that the Lloyd Athletic Club is by far the best gym you will ever find.
LAC ride or die
Love this place. Been a member for years and have brought tons of my friends. Safe, clean and friendly.
I’ve worked out here for 30 years. Great club great value, I love the squash courts and staff. We love you Billy and Marlena!
Lloyd Athletic Club is a very relaxed and comfortable gym. Members are very friendly and staff members work so hard to make the gym a great place for everyone. If you are looking for a gym definitely check out LAC!:)
I love this gym! I feel so welcome and at home as soon as I walk in the door. Everything's clean and the equiptment is great, plenty of towels and all of that.but really what stands out is the the staff and managment. The people who make up this club are just amazing and make all the difference, I happily drive a little out of the way to make this my fitness home!
I’ve never been to a gym that has been so welcoming and comfortable! The customer service is amazing and the staff treat you like a family. Marlena helped me feel at ease through the whole sign-up process and was a joy to work with.
