McMenamins Old St. Francis School reviews
15 Watching a movie here is worth it.
Smoking a cigar at the cigar bar here is worth it.
That's all I would say is worth it. The food is okay, a bit expensive for the quality but okay. However, multiple times here throughout the years I have had to argue final receipt amounts. I believe you shouldn't go out to eat if you don't have the money to tip well (at least 20%), so I always tip at least 20, even if a server isn't doing their best. But still, every so often over the years, I will see my card is charged with an extra at least 10 dollars for tip. The owners are aware. I have had to start taking photos of my receipts in order to be able to contest. So that's just my recommendation for others if you buy drinks there, make sure to get a receipt. If you want a strong drink, this isn't the place to go, but if you just want to enjoy some time with friends or family and not be too intoxicated, this is a nice spot. It's quirky and has a history. I've never stayed at the hotel section before, so I cannot speak on that.
My husband and I stayed for the weekend to celebrate our anniversary! The soaking pool was our favorite part of our stay! The temperature was perfect! Our room was cute and funky but the pillows were super flat and uncomfortable! It was fun being right in downtown so we were able to walk everywhere! We had great service at the restaurant and would recommend the hot apple cider with cinnamon whisky!
Went out with a group of friends the other day. Took about 10 minutes to get seated, no big deal. After being seated, it took another 25 minutes before a waiter came by to take drink and food orders. The table was not fully set. People were missing knives, forks, napkins, and waters. After food finally came out, they brought it out piecemeal, instead of all at once. Half the food was cold. Several orders were incorrect. They dropped the food off and ran away without asking if we needed anything else. I couldn't even start eating until utensils were brought to me, which we had to grab ourselves from the host's stand, because the service staff never delivered them. The Ahi Tuna dinner special was $14 and was literally 6 tiny slices of tuna and two tablespoons of cucumber slaw. Complete insult. Everything has gone up in price and portion sizes have shrunk significantly. Was also overcharged for my order, which I had to catch and correct. Will never go back. Used to love this place. It was a go-to spot.
This is a very charming hotel with so much to offer. The Turkish pool is relaxing and the food offered at their pub was delicious. I really enjoyed having a drink or two by the fire pits. My only complaint about my stay is that the bed was very uncomfortable and left me feeling pretty stiff for a couple of days.
Great atmosphere and food. The elk burger is amazing. They also have fires outside to enjoy when it gets a little chilly out
I am hooked on the McMenamins experience! McMenamins Old Saint Francis has a unique grounds. It has everything you could ever want, a hidden bar, secret rooms, amazing restaurant and pub, movie theater in game room, I mosaic tile salt water soaking pool with open ceiling and of course a brewery. The rooms are amazing and this is truly an experience destination.
Booked two nights on the advice of a local friend. The room was a double queen in the education building, and both nights we were there the hvac was out. Wouldnt have been much of a problem but the window looked directly into the public resturant/ pub courtyard and we couldnt open it for air without also having all the noise of a boisterous weekend crowd. Bathroom was also tiny, and we misunderstood the soaking pool- its a communal pool, not a private bathtub. We only had a shower in the room, which wasn't conducive to bathe small children. Parking was a nightmare, and the painting in the room was super creepy. Room service food also arrived cold, no water bottles or drinks were included. We actually went to another hotel for our second night as the stay was so uncomfortable.
Great place to stay if you are visiting Bend. Secret rooms to find, a speak easy kind of bar, and a soaking pool in a gorgeous tiled room. They have events, recommendations for things to do, good food and good beer.
Don’t forget to tip your housekeepers though!
My wife and had limited time and limited funds for our anniversary. The Old St. Francis School was perfect. Lots to do on sight, a Movie Theater, Mineral Spa, Restaurant, multiple Bars including a Cigar Bar, Hiden Rooms that can be found in the multiple buildings and fire pits throughout the vast outdoor seating areas.
Our room was called the Rambler, the head board was a painting of an old Rambler grill, there was also matching artwork. I was probably more excited about the Rambler room than my wife.
That staff was wonderful, the service was a 10 out 10. The drinks were great. The food was typical McMenamins "passable", breakfast was a surprise, Wow, I had the best biscuits gravy of my life.
Overall it was a great experience, my wife and I very grateful the McMenamins and their staff for providing such a wonderful experience for anniversary.
Had a great time in the family suite! If anyone plans on the couches as being a sleeping option they need to like a very firm mattress and make arrangements for additional bedding. I didn't make those plans, my friend made them for me, I still love him. I need a chiropractor, it's a comfortable couch for sitting on. The two bathrooms are in each bedroom. There's a mini fridge with no freezer space, there's a coffee make without coffee but there's fresh coffee served in the halls every morning along with tea bag choices, hot water, half n half, sugar, sugar substitute. The room had plenty of plates, bowls, utensils. It truly is a wonderful place to gather!
We ate and had drinks At the bar and the food/service is exceptional! The bread pudding brings us back everytime!
Only Con is there is a server who works there and likes to whistle the whole time. Can be pretty distracting during a nice dinner.
This was our first stay at a McMenamins property. It won't be our last! We stayed almost a full week and our front desk person steered us to a cozy and spacious room. The location is great - a short walk to downtown, the Old Mill District, the Deschutes River, and a ton of breweries, but also sort of on the periphery of a residential area so a bit quieter. We didn't get to the movie theater, but we did hit the restaurants and bars, mineral pool, and speakeasy. We had a terrific stay at the Old St Francis School and we will be back.
A friend of ours that had been working at this location for the past couple years died in a tragic accident. The Mcfamily bent over backwards to "take care of one of their own" by hosting a celebration of life for our friend. A bunch of us came from out of state to attend. We were totally blown away by the staff/management. What an incredible job they did to take care of everyone, feed us, mourn with us. It was super legit. Thank you so much you guys. It meant so much to us!
Have stayed in the Art House (King patio room) since it was constructed - the artwork, hidden rooms, broom closet bar, patio w juniper wood burning in the fire pits - what’s not to love! Oh, the location is perfect - you can walk or bike downtown or over to Mill District - electric bikes are everywhere and super easy to ride!
This was one of the neatest places I've ever ate at.my family shared a pizza.we had a great time
