Warm welcome, gracious service.had an Americano, but the sandwich offerings and breakfast sandwiches all day are a huge 10!

Order their "professor sandwich". (It's not on the menu.)
Delicious bi-bim-bap on Thursdays at lunch. Don't miss it!

I've lived in Portland since September 2016. Before that, I lived in Italy for 11 years. I am not an espresso expert. But my taste buds know what they like, and they liked virtually every espresso I drank in Italy. In the 6+ years I've lived in Portland, I've found 4 places where my taste buds like the espresso. Unfortunately, I have tasted espresso in Portland at many more than 4 places.
In no particular order, the places that my taste buds tell me make and sell good espresso are:
Spella Caffe, 520 SW 5th Avenue;
Caffe Umbria (three locations in downtown Portland) ;
Piccone's Corner, Butchery and Restaurant, 3434 NE Sandy Blvd. (n.b. Everything at Piccone's tastes like it comes from Italy.) ;
Sunny's Espresso and Gifts, 1900 SW 4th Ave.
Spella, Umbria and Piccone's are founded and owned by Italians from Italy.
Sunny's only connection to Italy is the coffee they brew. I'll let you ask Sunny's owner (I don't know if the owner is named "Sunny. ") why his shop is on this list.
If Sunny's were located anywhere in Italy, no Italians would notice, because no one would find anything wrong with Sunny's espresso, or different from any other espresso they've had in Italy.
I'll let this review infer what I think of espresso in Portland in general, and of the pride many Portlanders have about the quality of coffee in Portland. I don't claim to have tasted every espresso offered in Portland. But I've had espresso at many more places in Portland than 4.
