Alcoholics Anonymous Lehigh Valley - AA Meetings - ABE Intergroup reviews
3 Yikes. My partner's mother called the ABE Intergroup/AA Lehigh Valley Hotline today, and spoke with someone named Mike. She vulnerably disclosed to 'Mike' details of an addiction she's suffering from (that isn't alcohol-related). She asked if she'd be welcomed to the group to listen and learn, since her addiction is unique, and specific support groups for her disorder are few and far between, to say the least.
'Mike' told her that she'd be "laughed at" for her addiction, because her addictive behavior is "healthy for her. " He stated that attending AA would be a "waste of time, " implying that an addict in need is less than welcome.
Finally, I understand that AA is for those recovering from alcohol addiction and/or dependance. I understand the importance of specified, safe, spaces for those in need. However, such a group owes to interested parties respect, kindness, and empathy, at the very least.
As a previous mental health practitioner, I'm deeply disappointed.
AALV has made my life for 32 years! I have learned to appreciate the little things in life, help people for the feeling of gratitude & love, and not to carry around resentments. The Bookstore & ABE Intergroup are the best, the LV meetings are numerous (approximately 200 a week - different locations, days, times, and different types (i.e. Discussion, Big Book, Steps, Traditions, and Anniversaries, Topics, Living Sober, as Bill Sees it, etc.). Try them just for a visit and see what you think. The Members are great too. Thank you for being a part of my life.
