American Swedish Historical Museum reviews
11Really learned a lot of interesting history of Sweden in colonial America. Also, has beautiful collection of folk art and other art.
During 1926, the Swedish-American committee of the Sesqui-Centennial International Exposition of 1926 was formed. Noted author and historian, Amandus Johnson was elected to be its president. From this activity grew a committee to plan ways to preserve the memory of the New Sweden colony which dated to 1638. The New Sweden Tricentennial Association was formed which commissioned and published Swedes In America, 1638–1938, a work of historical research which was edited by Adolph B. Benson and Naboth Hedin (New Haven, CT: Yale University Press. 1938).
Soon, the first national campaign was underway to erect a Swedish Museum in Philadelphia. On June 2,1926, Sweden's Crown Prince and future King Gustaf VI Adolf placed the Museum's cornerstone. In the fall of 1928, Christian von Schneidau painted the Museum's entrance-hall ceiling and wall murals. The formal public dedication of the Museum took place on June 28,1938. This event was set to coordinate with the 300th anniversary of the Swedish arrival on the Delaware shores. Swedish Prince Bertil and Princess Louise made up the royal party that dedicated the Museum.
Never realized that this museum was in FDR Park. They even have a library to read more about the different displays. The adorable wooden horses are fun for everyone.
Great museum about Sweden, Swedish culture and the history of the New Sweden colony in the Delaware river area.
Had the opportunity to visit this past week, a beautifully maintained museum with an interesting history! The employees are all very nice and passionate. The exhibits are very unique and detailed, I could have spent a long while reading everything. We went during the tattoo: identity through ink exhibit which was well made and very interesting. Overall a great day trip!
This museum is a hidden gem on the outskirts of FDR Park. We enjoyed a Christmas tour which included a tasting of warm glogg and pepparkakor baked goods. Swedes were the earliest inhabitants of Philadelphia! The museum's standing and changing exhibits are engaging and enlightening. There is free onsite parking, and membership/event prices are reasonable. Last summer, we got to practice plogging: the Swedish practice of picking up trash while jogging.
This museum has many categories for every Swedish historical events from cabinetmakers to famous singers. This museum has lots of paintings, furnitures, glass, and stories about famous Swedish people from the past. The people that work there were very nice and helpful. I would recommend that you go there.
Very nice museum in South Philadelphia with unique Swedish library & art. Great place to enjoy a few hours learning about Swedish influence & history in the USA.
It's great and after driving by so many times I was really surprised how interesting it was and the building was really awesome.
Beautiful museum, so many people don’t even know it’s there. You will learn so much about the Swedish culture, love first floor, handmade outfits and the amazing painting up top on the ceiling. Hopefully more people will go enjoy it the way I did.
Great open face smoked salmon sandwich at Flower Show’s Christina’s Cafe on the terrace. Lots of salmon with onion and capers. Interesting Swedish gift shop. The coffee lacked taste to put it mildly.
