Banana Leaf: Malaysian Cuisine reviews
19One of my favorite places to get dinner/takeout in Philly. Consistently good with low wait times. Also lots of vegetarian dishes and you can customize some meat dishes to be veg friendly.
The Thai basil noodles were extremely overcooked, lacking the freshness one expects from a well-prepared dish. And, they had no discernible flavor, which was truly disappointing. The coconut rice seemed like stale leftovers from days ago. If that were the only issue, I would have given this a two-star rating. However, as I was about to leave, I spotted a cockroach scurrying past my feet. It was truly revolting and left me feeling disgusted.
The food presentation has diminished. The mango chicken was not presented in a mango. The waitress was very unfriendly. We asked if they served chrysanthemum tea, she said, "That's something white people have, not here. " I was introduced to chrysanthemum tea at dim sum just a block from here in the 90s. The restaurant was very empty, probably due to the rude waiting service.
The satay chicken were so good! The meat was moist and peanut sauce was delicious. We ordered the captain noodle, it’s solid. We also had the hokkien fried noodles; too salty and saucy. We thought it’ll be on the dryer side. But it was a good lunch; fast and efficient. Service was pretty good.
Food was tasty. I had never had Malaysian, the dishes were all really good, one was over cooked we didn't say anything and the host brought us a new one.
Quick, efficient and affordable tasty Malaysian food. Always start off with their Roti Canai - save leftover curry for a side of rice (YUM). This time we tried the Pad Thai, not Malaysian but it was really tasty and flavorful. Also got the Singapore Noodles but these didn't have the expected curry flavor. Still good but just didn't hit the spot. The Malaysian Style Spare Ribs are a fave for us here and didn't even get a photo as we were too busy digging in. So good.
Service was on point, very attentive without being annoying. Three of us ate with appetizers for 60 bucks no booze. Food is great. We tried the pad thai, Captain noodles, and rice a WeChat a different type of roti. I'm coming back soon
Well, it all started with my niece and the rest of the gang wanting to go to the BananaLeaf Thai restaurant in Philly, located at 1009 Arch St.to celebrate her college graduation from Bryn Mawr. So, once we got there I decided to go to male restroom. After using the restroom (to do a number 1) I proceeded to soap up and lather my hands. Then as I was washing my hands a cook came out of a stall (after taking a number 2, I presume) and was about to just exit the bathroom until he noticed me looking at him. He quickly backtracked and made his way to the sink. Once at the sink he merely rinsed his hands off for a few seconds w/o using ANY soap. He then left to get back to work. I suddenly lost my appetite. I IMMEDIATELY informed the party I was with, which was my niece, her two friends, my girlfriend, my sister, and my mother about whsyt I had just observed in the restroom. Needless to say we didn't eat in that establishment that day and will NEVER be back again.
Went with friend who is from Malaysia so it is the real deal. Food was great. Service very friendly.
They presented me with lips stained glass we to drink out of, I sent them back then sat other parties and took their order before taking ours. So we left.sucks for dine in.
Not a big fan…
the restaurant was nicely decorated but very dark. The food came out suspiciously fast making me believe it’s probably not fresh and is just reheated over and over again. I ordered the Basil Pad Thai and couldn’t finish it because the shrimp was not cleaned properly. All of the chicken products taste weird and have a rubbery texture. The workers were nice and the food was really cheap (my entire order was $37) but other than that i do not recommend.
This restaurant has the best Malaysian food. Ask for their special of the day. They have good vegetarian options as well. Their food comes pretty quick as well.
A quiet unassuming restaurant with excellent food! 3 of us split 3 entrees and we enjoyed all of them. Especially the Captains Noodles.
Every single time I come to Philly, I always make a point to eat lunch here. The Roti Canai with their sauce is VERY GOOD. Never disappointed with their food. Service is always quick too. Bring cash though cause they do charge a fee if you use your card.
I love this place:) my family has been going since i was extremely young and now that i live in philly i take all my friends, it really is delish.i really dont know many other places that sell fried ice cream, so even when i dont get food food i always stop for the fried ice cream (which comes w fried bananas too) and its AMAZING.
Delicious food and very fast service! The waitress was great too — we initially ordered four bowls of rice and she told us that we should get less for now because we had a noodle dish and we could see how we felt later. Appreciate that a lot! Two of our party were familiar with Malaysian cuisine and both loved it. One was a newcomer and also loved it. Apps and food put us at less than 25 per person
Eating at Banana Leaf is always an amazing experience. You should always get the rotti and the satay. Seriously, I can not say anything better about their satays. Both the chicken and beef ones are great. I've got to say the pad thai was a bit disappointing the last time I went, but the other times were great.
Food was amazing. Try the roti as an appetizer. Can't go wrong.
My only issue was they had a large group of 30 temple students and we weren't able to hear ourselves talk over their yelling.
Food was really nice. The staff were lovely and made sure our water was refilled. The soda is in a can no dispenser so not free refills.
The food was affordable and i would recommend this place.
