A little late at returning our call to make an appointment but excellent care for our pups

The office was pretty clean and the staff was extremely friendly. Dr. Ladd was very kind, knowledgeable and professional. She knew how to handle my nervous cat. She discussed treatment plan with me and explained the difference between medications very clear. They even gave me a chance to see the bill before I made any decision, though my cat was covered by insurance. After taking my cat for a skin care suspicious of allergy to dust mite, I received a call two days later to follow up progress. They really show their care for clients, and I would absolutely recommend them to any pet owner looking for a quality vet clinic!

Disclaimer: To be extremely clear, our pets were patients of City Vets for years and we recently had a visit at South Side Flats Animal Hospital. While the building is the same, the difference between the 2 is absolutely apparent so I want those reading this review to understand these practices are indeed not one and the same.

City Vets was wonderful: great veterinarians, thorough care, very professional.

South Side Flats Animal Hospital falls far short.

As a patient of City Vets, we made an appointment for our unexpectedly and unexplicably unwell large breed dog at SSFAH. We were taken into an examination room within 10 minutes by a tech who took down the basics of what was wrong with our young dog in a notebook. Not on a computer as we would have expected, but okay, honestly not a big deal in the larger scheme of things. Keep reading.

Our pup has always been very healthy, so we gave the tech a lot of detail around things that were concerning. Her symptoms were vast and we just knew she wasn't herself, so we mentioned anything to help provide a background. The initial triage consisted of the tech looking at only 1 side of our pup's mouth and taking her temperature with what she herself admitted was a thermometer "very slow" at taking readings. The thermometer was in my dog for at least 1 minute with the vet tech saying ". You're a big dog, you can take it" when our pup showed obvious signs of discomfort. Unexpected and less than ideal, but the vet was on the way so we remained encouraged.

Enter Rebecca Ladd. We have literally never experienced a vet of this manner. She walked into the room with no introduction. (Remember what was mentioned at the start of this review: while established patients of City Vets, we were new to SSFAH). She called our dog by the wrong name, sat down on the stool in the center of the room, and proceeded to reach out and yank our large, scared dog (who was having breathing issues) toward her by her collar in lieu of getting on the floor with her as most vets in my 30+ years of pet ownership have done. (Again, our girl is a large breed, so she can't simply be lifted onto the exam table.) After the second yank of the collar, I got onto the floor to comfort our pup and encourage her to move toward Ladd to get examined. But alas, no real exam happened. No checking of the ears, teeth, eyes, joints - anything really. No stethoscope ever made an appearance so listening to our pup's breathing, heart, etc.never happened. All that was offered up was gossip about other practices and other patients. We know more about Ladd's prior patients' health than our own pup's. She even remarked at one point about a patient she had seen before who had a slew of health problems, and - as we obviously reacted with "Aww's" and "Ohh's" - she told us not to feel bad because the dog's owners had won the lottery recently and could afford the care. That is not the point.

The point is we bring our pets in for general care and comfort and healing when they are unwell. If you are interested in the same for your pets, I encourage you to look for a different practice. We walked away with a large bill, a small supply of what turned out to be inappropriate medication, no answers, and a very uneasy feeling.

Fast-forward a few days when we decided to take our pup to an urgent care facility since she showed no improvement. Given our poor experience days earlier, we were adamant about not taking her back to SSFAH. The new care facility immediately diagnosed that our dog was very dehydrated and had been prescribed inappropriate medication days earlier.

We still don't have all the answers, but we do know that the new vet has our pup's best interest in mind and has provided appropriate medication and a thorough examination. They've also provided us with a game plan on how to continue to help our girl. If only we'd gone to the second facility first, we would've saved our girl the extra days of pain.

As pet lovers, we truly cannot recommend SSFAH to any pet parent.

I've been going to City Vets (now SSFAH) for almost five years and I loved the first vets a lot. Then the pandemic. Now I see some familiar faces, and that makes me happy. Dr. Ladd has been terrific in my visits/appointments with her. She helped me through euthanizing one dear dog, and now my remaining dog is in her care. She's kind, thorough, friendly, and, though what do I know, knowledgeable. She has given me options with both dogs, options that were well explained. The entire staff has been great in my experience — I feel like my dogs are treated well and with a kind of care that I appreciate. The facility is clean and seems to run smoothly too. I live nearby and walk to and from our appointments, which is a plus for me, but I'd still encourage people from elsewhere to consider this practice when they're looking for a vet. Keep doing what you're doing — a lot of us appreciate you.

Such a great vet office right by Birmingham Bridge! Even when busy, everyone always answers my questions and concerns about my cat. They genuinely care about your pets wellbeing and safety. Always quick to schedule and upfront about prices:) accepts care credit!

I am a poor, trans resident of Pittsburgh, living in a large subsidized housing unit for low income families. Recently, someone in the neighborhood acquired a puppy with Parvovirus and unfortunately, my dog had yet to be vaccinated for Parvo, meaning that she now has it. I had to call 9 different vet clinics who all said they could not see her same day, or were not willing to work with the limited funds we have.

I called City Vets and we were able to bring my dog in for a same day appointment for a diagnosis. She tested positive for Parvovirus and requires round the clock treatment at home with antibiotics, anti inflammatory meds, and anti nausea meds. She is very ill but due to the rapid response and incredible care provided by the Vet and her kind and compassionate staff, Bella is starting to perk up a little and we're looking at a more positive outcome overall.

Without City Vets, we may be looking at a much, much worse outcome and I will be forever thankful for the care City Vets provided for my sweet baby. My partner and I were so scared to come home alone, we're so relieved to have her in our arms again.

The staff was extremely friendly, and the vets were very kind, educated, and informative. After taking my cat for vaccinations and a checkup, I received a call the next day checking in on him. They really seem to care a lot about their clients, and I would absolutely recommend them to any pet owner looking for a quality vet!

I cannot express enough how grateful I am to everyone at this clinic. They provided exceptional care for my pet while I was planning to move abroad. The entire staff, including Dr. James Baldwin, were empathic, supportive, and accommodating, making the whole experience stress-free. My dog even loved visiting them, which speaks volumes about the care they offer. Highly recommended!

The best vet in the area. The staff is unbelievably friendly and accommodating and treat our Husky like family. Would recommend them to anyone.

Dr. Baldwin is thorough and all the staff are very friendly. Been bringing my two cats here for a while. When one had a bad bladder infection they were able to get me in quickly and get her medication that treated it fast

Nice front desk there but the vet doesn’t have a sense of welcoming and caring for the pet. Feel like they are just doing the jobs.

City Vets has always been very helpful when it comes to regular checkups, unexpected appointments/calls, or updated documentation requests. Even since moving out of the Southside they’re still worth the commute.

City Vets has done an amazing job taking care of my two dogs! My one pup is definitely difficult and requires a little more time and consideration when it comes to his visits. Everyone is so pleasant and nonjudgmental with us. It’s so hard to find a practice that you like the office staff, techs, and vet and City Vets has always been that for us! Thank you for all you do!
