Dentistry by April Detar, State College PA

I waited two years to write this review, but it is what I would have wanted to read before coming to this practice. The office is very nice, and the staff is very friendly. Dr. Detar is aggressive with her treatment plans. I had 2 cavities in my life prior to being seen here where I was told I had 7. I was post-partum and tired so I had them filled without asking any questions. I regret not seeking a second opinion. I had significant sensitivity for months after and returned for several adjustments. The next step was going to be removing and replacing one of the fillings. I sought a second opinion where it became evident that not all of these cavities were clear cut and maybe not even necessary. I do know the fillings are large and likely to cause me problems in the future. Be cautious and get a second opinion if you are unsure. If you prefer more conservative treatment, this is not the office for you.

Rescheduled way too often. Appt in 2 weeks and told today they’ll be closed that day. They can reschedule me in 5 months, even after telling them I’m receiving chemo and need to be seen regularly per my oncologist. Yep, no. Time to find a new dentist! Save yourself the grief.

I think this practice is so fraudulent. I never had a cavity in my life and have always gone to the dentist every 6 months and then when I came here I was diagnosed with 7 at once and had to have them all taken care of in 2 appointments. I still have severe sensitivity. Now I see a different dentist and they again always tell me I never have cavities. I’ve heard from many people that they also feel Dr. Detar over prescribes services and won’t clean their teeth unless they do what she recommends. I can’t believe how many 5 star reviews this place has with the number of people I hear complain about their experiences.

Dr. Swogger was amazing! I have extreme anxiety, so I was a mess going into the office! Her and the dental assistant were absolutely great, they talked me through everything and helped keep my mind of the procedure itself. I cannot thank them enough for their kindness! I highly recommend this practice!

There's a reason (many, actually) why this dentist office has only five star reviews. Dr Deter and her team have created such a modern, polished, and safe environment for clients of all ages. She is truly the best when it comes to skill and talent, but also compassion and authenticity. The dental assistants and hygienists are just as great - they're always willing to answer questions with thorough explanations and take excellent care of their patients. I honestly never expected to find a dentist team that I enjoy and appreciate this much. Since my first visit, I could tell the staff are like family to each other and treat their patients as such, too. Endless thank you's to Dr Deter and everyone who helps her practice run as smoothly as it does. I cannot recommend her enough!

Multiple horrible experiences at this practice. Close friends told me they felt Dr. Detar found "problems" that didn't exist but I ignored that. Then multiple hygenists came and went. Then I experienced for myself that ultimately they did not listen to understand their patients, but rather just pushed their own views. Sorry to my friends that I didn't listen when you told me.

April and her staff are wonderful. I can not praise them high enough. Kind, helpful, compassionate. They are everything you want in a dentist office.

I am a relatively new patient to Dr. Detar. I am someone who does my best to take care of my teeth but still have a few issues. I developed some anxiety surrounding dental procedures as a response to some less than ideal work I had done at another office. I had a root canal today with ZERO pain or discomfort. Dr. Detar explained what she was doing and made me very comfortable. I feel like I can move forward with the procedures I need without anxiety knowing that I am in the professional hands of Dr. Detar and her team! It is a relief to know that not only is my tooth in better shape but that a weight has been lifted mentally. Thanks you guys!

This morning I had crown-prep for two teeth and a cavity all on the last three teeth on my lower-back. So not an easy place to get to—a lot of water and excising and drilling and then building out a temp.

April’s positivity and chairside manner made what could have been grin and get through it procedure Into very much a positive experience. In fact, I actually did leave smiling.

The practice is very professional and I felt perfectly safe in our new COVID normal. But above all April and everyone on the staff make you feel welcome, looked after, and well cared for.

Dr Detar has my highest recommendation!

I cannot begin to express the gratitude and thankfulness that our family has for Dr Detar and her staff. She and her staff are thoughtful and considerate when it comes to our dental care and have always exceeded our expectations. If you are looking for a place that treats you like family, it is with Dr Detar and her staff!

Simply put, she is amazing. I may have had a half a dozen dentists during my life and she is easily the best. Great pain mediation, very careful, and excellent results. Talks you through the process and makes it very easy to relax. Very professional and caring person.

Words cannot express my sincere thanks to Dr. Detar and her staff. I had a bad experience with another dentist that began weeks prior to the COVID19 lockdown and dragged on for over two months with no end in site. I had a broken front tooth for over two months causing me to suffer pain and embarrassment. When I called Dr. Detar’s office and they agreed to give me an appointment I couldn’t have been more grateful. I can’t say enough, how truly thankful I am to Dr. Detar and her staff. My tooth is fixed and I left her office on a rainy day with a smile (inside and out) I didn’t have for over two months. Again, THANK YOU!

Dr. Detar and Angela are amazing. I had an emergency and I got a same day appointment to take care of my tooth. I appreciate that Dr. Detar took the time to explain the problem, show me the xrays and explain how she was going to fix it. Thank you both!

The Staff is very helpful and considerate. This is the most positive experience with a dentist.

As always, Doc April and her staff did an excellent job of communicating what I need to do to stay on track for my oral hygiene. Good to be treated as an individual, not just another set of chops that has to be dealt with. No regrets choosing Detar before, or in her new location.
