Italian Restaurant Johnnie's reviews
15This was my first visit here. My friend had treated me to a birthday lunch. Our server was great. She made suggestions and my friend chose crabcakes & excuse my spelling but I had roast pork with provolone cheese & Brazilian a Rabe. Sorry. My sandwich was mouth watering. I love a sloppy sandwich. My friend let me taste her crabcake and you could just tell they were freshly made. We had these cute little Cannolis and our server came over to join in a round of Happy birthday. May I add they were cheese Cannolis & absolutely delicious. They gave us all the time in the world. It was much appreciated.
Let me start by saying that before tonight, I recommended this restaurant to EVERYONE and ordered from here at least four times a month.
This evening I ordered from Johnnie’s via GrubHub which I’ve done 100 times. I don’t like to rush anyone when I order so I do not follow up until it has been at least 5-10 minutes beyond the latest delivery time which, in this evening’s case, was over an hour after I initially placed the order. So I call 10 minutes after my order was expected (at the lates) and advise the woman who answers the phone that I’m following up on a GrubHub order that I placed. She asks me the name, I give it to her. After a couple of minutes of speaking with someone else, she gets on the phone and tells me it was delivered 45 minutes ago. I explain that I never received the food, I have a Ring doorbell (which the instructions clearly state to utilize) and it was never rung, nor did it pick up anyone on my property. The woman says to me (I lie to you not), “are you trying to say your order wasn’t delivered? ” I said, “I am saying that it wasn’t delivered to my address. ” So she ends up essentially calling me a liar, saying the woman who delivered my food has been to my house before and described the step. I was appalled at how she spoke to me firstly, because I am a paying customer (and I was a very large order) but secondly, because I am a regular. I explained this to her and I asked if there was a car on the sidewalk, she asked the delivery driver who said no. I explained that my vehicle has been parked on my sidewalk for the last three hours and any adult human would have had to squeeze through to get to my step. The woman on the phone said they are closed and she only answered the phone, “to be nice, ” but their delivery woman followed my instructions (false) and delivered where the directions told her. She then hung up on me.
[Side note: I am currently sick with COVID and cannot go out to pick it up on my own, nor did I have the energy to cook or eat all day until I ordered this food. ]
In order, the reasons for this one star rating are as follows:
Lack of accountability, the fact that my order was not delivered, that I was yelled at by the person responsible for customer relations for their delivery woman’s mistake, that this order cost me $77 (which I’m sure GrubHub will take care of, but I genuinely hope it ends up coming out of the restaurant’s pocket) and that there was ZERO attempt by Johnnie’s to rectify this matter. I suspect the food was either delivered to the wrong address or the delivery woman took a decent sized dinner home to her family at my (but hopefully the restaurant’s) expense.
Frankly, as of late, the food has been extremely sub par especially given their prices, but I remained loyal. However, I will no longer give this restaurant my business. If this is how their customers are treated when a problem arises, one could order from any number of local Italian restaurants and the difference in quality is minimal.
If you still intend on giving this restaurant your hard earned money (times are tough.), here are some tips:
The Alfredo has no taste and is super oily, the gnocchis are always overcooked mush, usually the clams casino has more sand in it than any other single ingredient but I will say, the Chicken Pastina is always on point. Most everything else can be good (never great) or bad depending on who is back there cooking, but the price always knocks you over the head regardless of the quality and, if they mess up, they’ll just blame you, yell at you, and then hang up on you. Just Beware and at least order pick up.
Wonderful place, amazing food, and excellent service. This place reminded me of my Sicilian grandmothers house. Vodka sauce was amazing!
Wonderful south Philly resturant.
Food is delicious!
Staff is wonderful.
Waiting for our food order of 127 bucks, was really looking forward to it. 1.5 hours later no food arrived. The lady who answered the phone was very nice and apologized but bottom line is we never got our order. It sounds like the delivery driver took it to the wrong place. Really disappointed, we wanted to give this place a shot.
The food is always good, chicken cutlet italianos is really good, their broccoli rabe is really good
Ordered here tonight.got a cheesesteak with fries and house salad with grilled chicken. Great food. Women on the phone and delivery guy both were nice. Thanks so much! Would recommend
We were in South Philly doing a delivery and searched for Italian food nearby. Most places were upscale. We were just getting off work and wanted something more comfortable. This place is amazing. Food is delicious and cooked to perfection. The staff are super friendly, nice, professional and amazing. I would definitely recommend this for anyone nearby.
First time here, but I got the worst service I ever got. I don’t know her name but the lady with a blond curly hair, she was very disrespectful. She don’t know how to handle costumers. Learn some respect before you start working with people, I am Not coming back here even though food was good.
5 star rating for the overall experience, super friendly, FAST service. It's BYOB so be sure to note that if you'd like alcohol with your meal. Conveniently located near the house, food was good and plentiful, they said the plates were big and they were, their peppers are
My family and I ordered for delivery and was really disappointed to say the least. The portions were small, after eating none of us were full. They forgot a meatball that was ordered for one of the linguine meals. The meals had no flavor especially the Alfredo. And the chicken was burnt.
Got the pork paisano sandwich, absolutely fantastic. I liked it better than Dinic's which is their specialty. Johnnie's chops up the broccoli rabe which makes it even better. Really good!
The bruchutte & provolone hoagie (not sure spelling) is delicious +l! I highly recommend it!
The only negative thing I have to say is the girl at the front counter is rude. She made me wait there for at least 5 minutes while she answered call after call and this happened more than once. She is rude.
Food is always good but I wish they would use better packaging for take out. The Chicken Theresa was good but it leaked everywhere and we didn’t get forks.
Chicken Parm is the very best I've had in South Philly area by far. Friendly delivery driver. Just a good meal overall. I'm sure more things on the menu must be good.
